116. Jacob Carpenter

Ed. Spirit-- On the night of the 7th last, a party of convened at theresidence of Jacob Carpenter, about one mile from Calais, this county, for the purpose of having a
"brake down dance."  It has been a custom of long standing with thisparty to engage in drinking, dancing and etc., and too often theirfrolic ended in bloodshed, but this times seems to have been anexception, as the results have proved to be worse.  Your reportercould not get the particulars as in how the matter started, but itseems from the evidence that an altercation arose between a young mannamed Morris and James Carpenter, and terminated in a fight betweenthe two, in which Carpenter, being assisted by others, got the best ofMorris,  At this juncture another young man, Long by name, ran in tohelp Morris, but alas! the battery of the pugilists was turned on himand he was beaten almost to death.  By this time the old man hadreached the battle ground.  Inflated with the zeal which elevsicsdemons he advanced toward Long, swearing at the same time that hewould kill him.  The evidence is, that Long told him stand back or hewould shoot him;  he still advanced toward him;  when Long shot andlodged a ball in the back of his head while he was in the set ofpicking up a rock to hit Long.  James, son of the old man Carpenter, was shot also in the muss, the bullet is king effect is the shortribs.  The old man Carpenter is in a critical condition, but will nodoubt recover,  his son is now going about.  Long was arrested andbrought before Euq. Warner and after hearing all the evidence and someable speeches made by the counsel, the prisoner was acquitted, havingshot, as it was proved, in self-defense.
It seems from all accounts that here is a class of outlaws in theneighborhood of Calais, who have for years kept up a prefect hell, anda number of young man have been ruined;  and the young man who hasbeen the object of their hate, and whom they mangled in a shamefulmanner, but has been educated in their school.  It is time thecommunity was rid of such charterers.   The Spirit of Democracy 17Dec. 1878 Woodsfield Ohio.
