Mrs. Ella Creighton, 81, of Slainas Trail died of cancer at 4:15Thursday morning in South Side Hospital after an illness of a year anda half.
Mrs. Creighton was born Nov. 15, 1881 in Woodsfield, Ohio, a daughterof Daniel and Mary Powell, and came to Youngtown 35 years ago fromBellaire.  She was a member of the Daughters of the AmericanRevolution and Wesley Memorial Church.  Her husband, Harry, to whomshe was married in 1901, died in 1928.
Mrs. Creighton leaves fours daughters, Mrs. Charles Girts ofStruthers,  Mrs. George Schnell of Wheeling, W.Va.,  Mrs. MyrtleDahman of Youngstown and Mrs. Merrill E. Lutz, also of Youngstown,with whom she made her home;  two sons, Ray and Harry, both ofYoungstown;  a sister, Mrs. Addie Keylor of Addie Keylor of Ada,Okla.;  24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at theShriver-Allison South Side Funeral Home, where friends may call thisevening.  The D.A.R. will hold memorial services at 9 p.m. thisevening at the funeral home.

Woodsfield, O., Sept. 12 - Mrs. Dolly Harper, 72, died at 11 a.m.Friday in the home of a granddaughter in Bellaire.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ben Givens of Bridgeport, Mrs.Ward Brown of Clarksburg, W. Va., and Mrs. James Ricer of Woodsfield;a son, Charles, of Woodsfield; four sisters, Mrs. John Keylor and Mrs.L. F. Zogg, both of Woodsfield; Mrs. H. G. Tagert and Mrs. EllaCreighton both of Youngstown; several grandchildren andgreat-grandchildren.
The body was taken to the Bauer and Turner funeral home here whereservices are to be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday.  Minister CharlesHendershot will officiate and burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery.

Woodsfield, Nov. 4 - Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesdayafternoon at the late home on West Marietta street followed by finalrites at the Woodsfield Church of Christ at 2:30 o'clock, for HershelJ. Harper, 58, who passed away at his home at midnight Sunday.  Hisdeath following a serious illness of one week due to a cerebralhemorrhage.
He is survived by his wife; one son Charles Harper of Woodsfield, andtwo daughters, Mrs. Glenn Brown and Mrs. Ward Brown, both ofWoodsfield.  Several brothers and sisters survive including Mrs. ClydeHamilton, Woodsfield and John Harper, Graysville.  Many friends arealso saddened by his death.
Mr. Harper was employed as a laborer on various WPA projects in andnear Woodsfield for some time.  At the age of 16 years he was employedby Charles Joost in the meat business in Woodsfield and continued inthat business for 35 years.
The funeral services were in charge of J.V.A. Traylor, pastor of theWoodsfield Church of Christ and burial was made in Oaklawn cemetery.


633. John U. Powell

BARNESVILLE---John Powell, 80, 330 Sycamore St., was found dead in aclump of berry bushes near Crestview Cemetery Saturday evening by hisson, Francis.
Mr. Powell had left his home at 7 o'clock in the morning, andauthorities believe he died of a heart attack a short time later.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred and eight children,  Mrs. EdnaPhillips, Daniel and Raymond Powell, all of Ashland,  Francis, Mrs.Lillian Lucas, Frank, Clarence and Walter, all of Barnesville;  13grandchildren and five great-grandchildren;  six sisters, Mrs. AdaKeylor, Oklahoma,  Mrs. Dolly Harper of Bellaire, Mrs. Ella Creighton,and Mrs. Effie Tacker, both of Youngstown,  Mrs. Tillie Taylor andMrs. Katie Zogg both of Woodsfield.
Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Campbell FuneralHome in charge of Rev. C. N. Jarrett, pastor of the First ChristianChurch.  Burial will follow in Northern Cemetery.  Monday 3 July 1950Jeffersonian.

BARNESVILLE--Mrs. Mildred Nancy Powell, 79, of 330 Sycamore St., diedat her home Saturday at 1 P.M. She was born in Belmont County on April17, 1878, a daughter of James and Rebecca Lamp Delaney. She was unitedin marriage to John U. Powell on Nov. 24, 1894. He died July 1, 1950.
Mrs. Powell was a member of the First Chistian Church. She leavesseven children. Mrs. Sam Phillips, Ashland, Mrs. Lillian Lucas ofBarneville; Raymond Powell, of Barnesville; Frank of Atlas Route;Francis and Clarence, Frederick of the home; 17 grandchildren, 16great-grandchildren and one brother, Sam Delaney of Hunter.
Remains are at the Campbell Funeral Hope where friends may call. Lastrites will be conducted at the funeral home Tuesday at 2 P.M. by herpastor Rev. Ralph Fifield. Burial will be in Northern Cemetery. Monday6 Jan. 1958 Cambridge Jeffersonian Cambridge Ohio.

He was born Nov, 26, 1911, in Barnesville, son of the late John andMildred Delancey Powell. He was a retired mechanic for the formerPeters Ford Dealership, Barnesville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Arnold Powell; aninfant daughter; five brothers, Dan, Raymond, Francis, Hollis and FredPowell; and a sister, Edna Phillips.
Mr. Powell leaves a brother, Walter Powell of Bethesda; and a sister,Lillian Lucas of Bethesda.

Mr. and Mrs. Phillips moved to Barnesville four years ago afterresiding in Ashland 40 years.
Mrs. Phillips leaves her husband; a sister, Mrs. Lillian Lucas,Barnesville; and four brothers, Raymond Powell, Ashland, and James,Clarence and Walter Powell, all of Barnesville. Three daughterspreceded her in death.

Wednesday (June 3) at an area hospitalfollowing a long illness.  Mr. Phillips was a native of theBarnesville area, and a son of Horatio and Viola Price Phillips.  Hewas a member of the Protestant faith and the Loyal Order of Moose.
He is survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, andseveral nieces and nephews.  His wife, Edna Powell Phillips, died in1966.  Three brothers and a sister are also deceased.

James M. Powell, resident of Atlas Star Route, south of Barnesville,died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clyde Boyd, on QuakerCity route. He was born April 3, 1869, in Noble County, a son ofDaniel and Mary Carpenter Powell.
Surviving are the following children; Mrs. Elmer Holland ofBarnesville route; Mrs. Clyde Boyd of Quaker City route; Mrs. IraRandolph of Barnesville route; Bert Powell of Barnesville; Mrs. HermanRoby of Barnesville and Mrs. Kenneth Cross of Atlas Star route.Fifteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, six sisters andone brother also survive.

Surviving are his wife, Katerine Powell Randolph and several niecesand nephews.
Services were held at the Campbell-Plumly Funeral Home at 1:30Wednesday, with the Rev. Richard Perkins officiating.  Burial was madein the Crestview Cemetery.  Masonic services were held Tuesday eveningat the funeral home.

BARNESVILLE- HERMAN W. Roby, 61, 442 W Main St., died unexpectedly at6 a.m. Thursday at his home. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
Born Jan. 2, 1901, at Belmont, he was a son of Elias and Ethel Robyand was a member of the Church of Christ at Belmont.
Mr. Roby leaves his widow, the former Adda Powell, whom he marriedAug. 5, 1926, and two brothers, Carl Roby of Springfield, ClarenceRoby of Zanesville; several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Ellen Botkin

The family, friends and people of the community were shocked andsaddened by the sudden death of Mrs. Jacob Powell, a highly respectedresident of Leggett avenue, which occurred in her home, Thursdaymorning due to heart malady from which she had been suffering inrecent months.  She had been ill since 1933, but was able to be aroundher home duties and when the final attack came, her death was quiteunexpected.
Margaret Ellen Botkin, daughter of Smith and Martha Ann Botkin wasborn Sept. 21, 1872 near Somerton, where she lived in early life.  OnFeb. 7, 1893, she was married to Jacob Powell and to this union fivechildren were born, two whom preceded her in death.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, and one daughter;William and Charles Powell, Barnesville;  Mrs. Virginia VanHorne,Morristown;  also by two grandsons Thomas and Robert Leach in thehome,  whom she had reared from childhood;  eight other grandchildren;one sister, Mrs. T. M. Brown; one half-sister, Jennie McElroy, both ofBarnesville and many other relatives.
It can be truthfully said of Mrs. Powell that "she lived for others"always thinking of their welfare and comfort and while healthremained,  she was ever ready to help the sick and afflicted or thosein sorrow and will be greatly missed in the home and in the community.Mrs. Powell was genial and jovial and was one of the substantialsubscribers of the Whetstone for many years.  She was a faithfulmember of the East Main Street Church of Christ and lived accordingly.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 1:30 in thechurch by Evangelist James Gallagher and burial was in the SouthernCemetery.  Thursday 2 May 1940 Barnesville Whetstone.

Mr. Carpenter, who was a former night-watchman at the old May-FiebegerPlant, was born July, 1889, in Calais, Monroe County, the son of Mosesand Helen (Buckingham) Carpenter.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Ball and a son Arthur S.Carpenter, both of Newark;  also eight grandchildren;  threegreat-grandchildren;  one brother Luther Carpenter of Wheeling, W.Va.
The Rev. H.E. Doyle will officiate at services at 2:30 p.m. Saturdayin the chapel in Criss Brothers Funeral Home.  Interment in WilsonCemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Thursday.
