698. Sarah Ann Carpenter

Sarah A. Moore, only daughter of Joseph and Drusilla Carpenter wasborn October 8, 1874, in Seneca township, Monroe county, Ohio and diedOctober 24, 1910 aged thirty-six years and sixteen days.
She was untied in marriage with Grant P. Moore,  March 10, 1894.  Tothis union were born seven children, two sons and five daughters,Oscar Earl, Ollie Drusilla, Ada Zelma, Esther Gale, Hubert Edson,Mildred and Edna May.  The husband and five children survive her;Hubert passed on before her October 10, 1908 and Mildred on February2, 1909. She leaves her father, Joseph Carpenter, and three brothers,Silas, Oscar and Ross, all of near Calais, Ohio and host of relativesand friends.  Her disease was paralysis.
Mrs. Moore united with the Christians at Bates Hill in 1905 and was aconsistent member when able to attend but had been in poor health forseveral years.  She was a kind mother and a true wife.  Her friendswill greatly miss her for she was kind and affectionate to all.  Theremains were taken to Bates Hill cemetery, October 26, and laid besideher son and daughter.
The relatives are grateful to all for the kin assistance in the lastsad rites also for the many flowers which thickly covered the whitecasket.  She was followed to her last resting place by a large crowdnumbering over three hundred people.  Words of consolation were spokenby James Parsons.   Wed 9 Nov 1910 Noble County Leader.

On October 8th there was held in honor of Sarah A. Carpenter, daughterof Joseph Carpenter, at the residence of Vincent Carpenter Sr. hergrandfather, a birthday party, it being her 18th birthday, in whichthere was a very enjoyable time.  Of course as their custom is theclosing exercise consisted in tripping the light fantastic toe.  Allpassed off quitely and peaceably.  The following is a list of presentsgive;

Grant Patterson Moore

Grant P. Moore, 90, a retired school teacher and country storeoperator, died Saturday, August 27, 1960 at 4:00 P.M. at his home nearBaskerville following a long illness.
Mr. Moore was the son of Marshall and Nancy Stephens Moore.  He wasborn in Noble County, July 21, 1870 and was a member of the Church ofChrist and a 58 year member of Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are a son;  Earl Moore of near Quaker City;  two daughtersMrs. Hayes Bates of the home and Mrs. Earl Carpenter Jr. of nearSummerfield;  nine grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.His wife Sarah Carpenter Moore died in 1910.
Services were conducted at 3:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the BatesHill Church of Christ,  with Evangelist Harley Bankes of Caldwellofficiating.  The body was taken to the church from Eberle FuneralHome in Quaker City,  Tuesday to lie in state one hour.
Masonic services were held Monday evening and burial was made in thechurch cemetery.  Monday 5 Sept. 1960 Monroe County Beacon WoodsfieldOhio.

Funeral services for Mrs. Esther Morris, aged thirty years, who wasfound dear early Sunday evening at the home of her father, G.P. Moore,of Quaker City route,  were conducted Tuesday forenoon in the BatesHill Christian Church by Rev. Fred Dentist.  Interment was made in thechurch cemetery.  The deceased had been afflicted with epilepsy forsome time and as there was a bruise on her head it is supposed thatshe suffered an attack and fell, striking her head and had later laiddown across the bed where her father, who had been away from home,found her upon his return.  Besides the father she is survived by onebrother Earl, of Quaker City and two sisters, Mrs. Earl Carpenter, ofnear Calais and Mrs. Hayes Bates, of Whigville.  Summerfield News Wed.3 Aug. 1932 Nobel County Leader.


1380. Ada Zelma Moore

Ada Zelma Moore, second daughter of Grant P. and Sarah A. Moore, bornApril 13, 1900, died November 8, 1910, aged 10 years, seven months andtwenty-six days. She leaves a father, one brother and three sisters tomourn her sad departure. Her mother passed over on the other shorejust two weeks before Zelma was called. We did all in our power tosave her but God knew best and she went to join her dear mother andwith clasped hands they are standing in that bright eternal home whereno sorrow, sickness nor death ever enters. Oh, dear Zelma, who we missher, for she was a kind hearted child and loved by everybody.
She will be missed as she was always was there. The remains were takento the Bates Hill Cemetery, November 9th, and laid beside her mother.The relatives are grateful for the kind assistance of the neighbors inhelping to care for the motherless child and also for the manybeautiful flowers, one especially from the employees of the tin platemills at Cambridge, where her uncle, P. M. Moore, is an employee.Words of comfort were spoken to the bereaved family by James Parsons.The pall bears were four of her girl schoolmates.

Oh, Dear Zelma, how we miss you.
And your voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in the home,
Which never can be filled.

701. Oscar F. Carpenter

Funeral services for Oscar Carpenter, 85, of Jerusalem R. D. 2 wereconducted Sunday at 1 P.M. at the Calais Methodist Church by the Rev.Charles Martin.  Burial was in Calais Cemetery.
Mr. Carpenter died Friday,  June 8, in a Cambridge hospital followinga brief illness.  A lifelong resident of Calais, he was born in MonroeCounty Dec. 10, 1876, a son of Joseph and Druzilla Carpenter and was aretired farmer.
Mr. Carpenter leaves a daughter, Mrs. Ocie Mercer of Jerusalem R. D.2;  a son, Roy Carpenter of Jerusalem R. D. 2;  a foster daughter Mrs.Earl Carpenter, Summerfield R.D.;  two brothers, Silas of SummerfieldR.D. 2 and Ross of Jerusalem;  and 8 grandchildren and 14great-grandchildren.  His wife preceded him in death.  Friday 15 June1962 Quaker City Home Towner.


1381. John Austin Carpenter

John Austin Carpenter, 56, of Jerusalem Route 2, a former employee ofan enamel-ware factory at West Layfayette, died at 11:15 P.M. Tuesdayin his car from an apparent heart attack.  He was seeking a doctor atthe time of his death.
He became ill at the home of a nephew, Donald Mercer of Woodsfield anddriven to the center of town where he died.  He had been living at thehome of his sister, Mr. Ocie Mercer of Jerusalem Route 2.
Surviving in addition to his sister are his father, Oscar Carpenter ofJerusalem Route 2 and one brother, Roy of Summerfield Route 2.  Hismother and two sisters preceded him in death.
The body was taken to the Brubach Funeral Home in Summerfield, whereit remained until noon Friday at which time it was taken to the CalaisMethodist Church for services at 1 P.M. which were conducted by Rev.Myron Guiler.  Burial followed in the Calais Cemetery.  Thursday 20July 1961 Nobel County Leader Caldwell Ohio.


1383. Shirley Waive Carpenter

Shirley Waive, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Carpenter,departed this life September 2, 1906, at her home near Calias, aged 6years. Shirley was a favorite among her many companions, indeed toknow her was to love her. Her death was caused from appendicitis.Everything that medical skill and human hands could do alleviate hersuffering was in vain. We Cannot find comfort and consolation only inthe precious words of Jesus who said "Suffer little children to comeunto me and forbid them not for such is the kingdom of Heaven." He hastaken from earth one more jewel to help make up his kingdom. She cameto earth, filled her mission in brightening the home, and has now gonewith her creator, Icel.  The Spirit of Democracy Woodsfield Ohio 13Sept. 1906.

A retired farmer, he died at 10 A.M. Wednesday (April 7, 1971) atBarnesville General Hospital following a brief illness.
A veteran of World War 1, he was born June 28, 1895 near Calais, theson of Oscar and Martha Dailey Carpenter.  In recent years, he madehis home with a sister, Mrs. Ocie Mercer, Jerusalem R.D. 1.
In addition to Mrs. Mercer,  Mr. Carpenter leaves another sister, Mrs.Edna Carpenter Summerfield R.D. 1;  and several nieces and nephews.8 April 1971 Cambridge Jeffersonian.

703. Silas W. Carpenter

SUMMERFIELD--Silas W. Carpenter, 90, of Summerfield R.D. 2, was deadon arrival at Barnesville General Hospital Tuesday afternoon.  He hadbeen ill only a few weeks.
He was born March 3, 1873 in Monroe County, a son of Joseph andDrusilla Porter Carpenter.  He was a farmer and a lifelong resident ofthe Calais Community.
On 7 June 1893, he was married to Charlotte Dailey, who survives.  Mr.Carpenter also leaves two daughters, Mrs. Mamie Starr of Quaker CityR.D. 4 and Mrs. Laura Carpenter of Quaker City;  two sons, Edson andElza of the home;  a brother, Ross Carpenter of Jerusalem; 11grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and eightgreat-great-grandchildren.  An infant son preceded him in death.
The body is at the Brubach Funeral Home here where friends may call3-5 and 7-9 P.M. Thursday.  Services will be conducted at 1 P.M.Friday at the Calais Methodist Church where the body will be taken atnoon.  The Rev. Charlotte Dailey

SUMMERFIELD--Mrs. Charlotte L. Carpenter, of Route 1, one of MonroeCounty oldest citizens died at 9:40 A.M. Wednesday at a CambridgeHospital at the age of 100.  She had been ill for only a short time.
Mrs. Carpenter was born Jan. 4, 1872 in Monroe County, a daughter ofJohn and Paulina Stephens Dailey.  Her husband, Silas Carpenter, diedon October 1963.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mamie Starr of Quaker City Route 4and Mrs. Laura Gibson of Quaker City;  two sons Edson and ElzaCarpenter both of Quaker City;  10 grandchildren; 29great-grandchildren and 21 great-great grandchildren.
The body was taken to the Brubach Funeral Home, here where friends maycall from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. today.
Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. at the Calais Church with theRev. Glenn Saunders officiating.  Burial will be in Calais Cemetery.29 Nov 1972  Zanesville Times Recorder.

CALAIS NATIVE WILL MARK 100TH MILESTONE JAN. 4

A century of life.  That is the achievement of Mrs. Charlotte DaileyCarpenter of the Calais community, who will observe her 100th birthdayTuesday Jan. 4.
Mrs. Carpenter never serious ill or in the hospital until the age of95, when she suffered a broken hip in a fall.  She is now a patient ina Cambridge Hospital.
The eldest and last of eight children of John and Paulina StephensDailey,  she was born in a log house near Calais.  The year was 1872.In 1893 she was married to Silas Carpenter and they had 70 years ofmarried life together before he passed away in 1963.  Mrs. Carpenteris a member of the Calais United Methodist Church.
She was a patient and willing homemaker,  ministering to the needs ofher family and enjoying her household duties and cooking,  herculinary art being one of her lifetime joys.  She was always pleasedwhen relatives and friends came by for visits and was a good hostess,insisting and satisfied when guests remained for meals.  It was notunusual for kinfolk and friends to remain for lengthy visits, oftenmonths at a time.
Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, had four children, all yet living;  Mrs. MamieStarr, Quaker City R. D.,  Elza and Edsen Carpenter and Mrs. Clyde(Laura) Gibson, Quaker City.
There are 10 living grandchildren,  Mrs. Waunita Forsythe and Mrs.Lucille Dollison, both of Quaker City;  Ural Starr of California;Mrs. Waive Neuhart and Gene Starr, both of Zanesville;  Edward Starrof Barnesville;  Mrs. Emma Brownfield, Alliance;  Mrs. Norma Lynch ofKentucky;  Mrs. Una Smith, Calais and Mrs. Iona Bundy of New Jersey.There are also, 28 great-grandchildren and 20great-great-grandchildren.  Friday 31 Dec. 1971 Quaker City HomeTowner.

He was born May 13, 1909, near Calais, son of the late Silas andCharlotte (Dailey) Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter was a farmer and a member of Calais Methodist Church.He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
He leaves a sister, Laura Gibson, of Quaker City,  several nieces andnephews and cousins.

Mr. Carpenter was preceded in death by one sister, Mamie Starr, andone infant brother.
He leaves one brother, Edson J. Carpenter of Barnesville;  one sisterLaura Gibson of Quaker City;  several nieces and nephews.
