932. John Oliver Carpenter

SUMMERFIELD---Funeral services for J. Oliver Carpenter, 76, of Summerfield, will be held at the Summerfield Methodist Church Friday at 2 P.M. by Rev. Lowell Kiger.  Burial will be made in Calais Cemetery.
Mr. Carpenter died Tuesday evening at a Cambridge hospital where hehad been a patient since Dec. 27 when he suffered a stroke.  The body is at Brubach Funeral Home and will be taken to the church Friday at 1P.M. to lie in state one hour.
A retired farmer, the deceased was a life resident of the Summerfield community.
Surviving are his widow, Cevilia;  two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Spence of Summerfield R.D. and Mrs. Mary Tilton of Summerfield;  six sons, John,David, Carson and Noah, all of Dayton,  S-Sgt. J. Oliver Jr of the U.S. Air Force in Florida and A 1-C James Carpenter of Philadelphia,Pa.;  a brother Earl Carpenter of Calais and several grandchildren.
Two daughters and a son preceded in death.  Thursday 12 Jan. 1956 Jeffersonian.


Civilla Carpenter

SUMMERFIELD--Mrs. Civilla Carpenter, 94, of Greenwood Manor NursingHome, Xenia, formerly of Summerfield, died at 9 P.M. Monday (May 23,1987) at the home following a long illness.
She was born Aug. 12, 1893, in Monroe County to the late Jacob andElizabeth Carpenter.  She was a Methodist by faith.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, J. OliveCarpenter, whom she married 1910 and who died Jan. 10, 1956.  She wasalso preceded in death by two sons, two daughters, two brothers andthree sisters.
She leaves five sons,  Carson C. Carpenter and Manoah Carpenter bothof Summerfield, David D. Carpenter of Xenia,  Johnny O. Carpenter Jr.of Gahanna and Jimmy W. Carpenter of Cambridge;  two daughters, Mrs.James (Ruth) Spence of Summerfield and Mrs. Charles (Mary) Tilton ofCaldwell;  28 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Wednesday at Neff-BrubachFuneral Home in Summerfield where services will be at 1 P.M. Thursdaywith Rev. Harold Green officiating.  Burial will be in CalaisCemetery.  Tuesday 24 May 1987 Jeffersonian.


1742. Carson C."Jack" Carpenter

SUMMERFIELD---Carson C. (Jack) Carpenter, 67, of Summerfield died at9:31 P.M. Saturday (Sept. 30, 1989) at Good Samaritan Medical Center,Zanesville, following a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 2, 1922, at Summerfield, son of the late J. Oliverand Civilla Carpenter Carpenter.  He was a retired blacksmith at theformer Ohio Ferro Alloys Co., Powhattan Point,  a Protestant by faith and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Carpenter leaves his wife,  Martha Leasure Carpenter, whom hemarried Nov. 26, 1960;  two step-daughters, Mrs. June McEfresh ofSummerfield R.D. 1 and Mrs. Wanda Schott of Dexter City R.D.1;  twosisters, Mrs. James (Ruth) Spence of Summerfield and Mrs. Charles(Mary) Tilton  of Caldwell;  four brothers, Manoah Carpenter ofSummerfield;  David D. Carpenter of Xenia;  Johnny O. Carpenter ofGahanna and Jimmy W. Carpenter of Cambridge;  eightstep-grandchildren;  several great-step grandchildren and severalnieces and nephews.

Martha Ellen Leasure

Martha Ellen Carpenter, 74, Route 1, Dexter City, formerly ofSummerfield died Saturday at her home.  She was born April 30, 1918near East Union,  a daughter of the late Wilbert Bert and Happy BelleHarris Leasure.
She was a retired employee at Imperial Clevite Corp. in Caldwell andwas a Protestant.
She was preceded in death by her first husband,  Roy Poulton;  secondhusband Carson C. "Jack Carpenter,  two brothers George Leasure andMarcus Leasure.
Surviving are her stepmother,  Nellie Leasure of Marietta;  twodaughters, June McElfresh of Summerfield and Wanda Schott of DexterCity;  one sister, Marie Kirkbride of Sarahsville;  half-sister,Barbara Erb of Waner;  half-brother, Larry Leasure of Beverly;  eightgrandchildren;  eight great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to P.M. Monday atBrubach-Watters Funeral Home,  Summerfield, where services will beheld at 11 A.M. Tuesday with the Rev. Harold Green officiating.Burial follows in Eastern Cemetery, Summerfield.

935. Earl Wells Carpenter

Earl W. Carpenter, 84, of Quaker City, Route 4, died Friday morning,December 2, 1966, at 6:30 o'clock in Barnesville General Hospitalwhere he had been a patient three weeks.
Born near Calais, on February 11, 1882, he was a son of John andLousia Wells Carpenter.  His wife Adeila died in 1945.
A retired farmer,  he spent his lifetime in the Calais community.
Surviving are seven sons.  Guy H. Carpenter, Dover;  Parker Carpenter,of Quaker City, Route 4;  Earl Carpenter, Summerfield Route 2;  RalphCarpenter, of Lewisville;  Robert Carpenter of Cambridge;  RaceyCarpenter and John Carpenter of New Philadelphia, Ohio;  fourdaughters,  Mrs. Lilly Stephens, of Cumberland;  Mrs. Jennie Stephens,of Cambridge,  Mrs. Mary Howell of Barnesville and Miss EvelynCarpenter of Clarksburg, W.Va.   A daughter, Mrs. Melva Pittman isdeceased.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in theCalais Methodist Church, with Rev. Bruce Frazier officiating.  Burialwas in Friends Cemetery, Quaker City.  Thursday 8 Dec. 1966 MonroeCounty Beacon Woodsfield Ohio.

CALAIS--Mrs. Adelia Carpenter, wife of Earl Carpenter, died Tuesdaymorning at her home here following an illness of pneumonia.
Surviving in addition to her husband are seven sons, Guy H. Carpenter,of Uhrichsville; John R., of New Philadelphia; Parker, of Barnesville;Earl of Quaker city; Ralph, of Tucson, Ariz.; Robert L., with the Armyoverseas, and Racey Carpenter, of Miltonsburg ; four daughters, LilyV., of Cumberland; Jennie, of Pleasant City; Mary, of Barnesville, andEmmaline Anne, of the home; 25 grandchildren, six sisters and threebrothers.

QUAKER CITY---Funeral services for Daniel S. Hayes, 79, well-knownCalais community farmer,  will be held Sunday at 2 P.M. in CalaisMethodist Church by Minister J.V.A. Traylor of Woodsfield.  Burialwill be in Calais Cemetery.
Mr. Hayes died in his home Thursday following a long illness.
Born in Monroe County, Jan. 10, 1875,  he was a son of Leonard andMary Carpenter Hayes.
Surviving are four sons,  Thruman of Cambridge,  Irvin of the home,Allen of Woodsfield R.D. and David of Quaker City R.D.;  fourdaughters,  Mrs. Susie Hannahs of Senecaville R.D.,  Mrs. NellieKeylor of Summerfield R.D., Mrs Enda Truax of Lewisville and Mrs.Grace Claus of Jerusalem;  29 grandchildren and 13great-grandchildren;  a brother Able Hayes of Summerfield;  twosisters, Mrs. Alice Carpenter of Summerfield and Mrs. Emma Bender ofLewisville.
His wife died Aug. 26, 1948.
The body will be returned to the home Friday evening from EberleFuneral Home.  Friday 6 May 1955 Cambridge Jeffersonian.

Mrs. Carrie B. Hayes, wife of Dan Hayes, died early Thursday morningat her home on Summerfield Rt. 3.  She was born in Noble County, Oct.22, 1877, in the Calais community where she lived for more than 60years.
Besides her husband she is survived by four sons, Truman, Cambridge;Allen, Woodsfield,  David, Quaker City and Irvin of the home;  fourdaughters,  Mrs. Susie Hannahs, Senecaville,  Mrs. Nellie Keylor,Mrs. Edna Truax, Summerfield and Mrs. Grace Claus, Jerusalem.  One sonand one Daughter are deceased.  One sister, Mrs. Edna Teel,   24grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
The body will be taken to the home from the Eberle Funeral Home,Quaker City,  Friday morning.  Short services will be conductedSaturday at 1 P.M. at the home.  Additional services will follow atthe Calais Methodist Church by Rev. J.V.A. Traylor, Woodsfield.Thursday 26 Aug. 1948 Cambridge Jeffersonian.

A retired farmer and laborer he was born Aug., 28, 1880 in MonroeCounty, the son of Leonard and Mary Carpenter Hayes, and was a memberof the Calais Methodist Church.
He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Olive Pierce , Quaker City R.D. 4,Mrs. Peal Hannahs, Summerfield R.D. 2 and Mrs. Shirley Delong,Woodsfield R.D. 3;  two sons, Oather of Barnesville R.D. 1 and Jamesof the home;  23 grandchildren;  16 grandchildren,  His wife theformer Emma Dailey died Feb. 28.  Two sons are deceased.

A U.S. Army veteran,  he was born Sept. 12, 1923 near Calais,  the sonof Abel and Emma F. Dailey Hayes.
He leaves three sisters,  Mrs. Shirley Delong,  Woodsfield R.D.3,Mrs. Pearl Hannahs,  Summerfield R.D. 1 and Mrs. Olive Pierce QuakerCity R.D. 4;  and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Brubach Funeral Home in Summerfield from 2 to 4and 7 to 9 P.M. Saturday.  The body will be taken to Calais UnitedMethodist Church for services at 2 P.M. Sunday with the Rev. Owen Hayes, 56, Summerfield Rt. 2, died about 10:30 A.M. Friday,November 10, 1967 while working in a cornfield about a mile southeastof Calais.  He suffered an apparent heart attack.
He was born in Monroe County Sept. 18, 1911 a son of Abel and EmmaFlorence Dailey Hayes.  He was a farmer worker,  he was a World War IIveteran and a member of Batesville American Legion Post.
He leaves his parents;  two brothers,  James Hayes, Summerfield Rt.2,and Oather Hayes, Barnesville Rt. 1; and three sisters,  Mrs. OlivePierce, Quaker City Rt. 4;  Mrs. Pearl Hannahs, Summerfield Rt. 2 andMrs. Shirley Delong, Woodsfield Rt. 3.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 P.M. Monday at Calais MethodistChurch with the Rev. Bruce Frazer officiating.  Burial was made inCalais Cemetery in charge of Eberle Funeral Home.  Thursday 16 Nov.1967 Barnesville Whetstone.


Ross Oscar "Buck's Ross" Carpenter

Ross Carpenter, aged sixty-three years, who had resided all his lifeon a Summerfield route farm, died at his home early last Saturdaymorning, following an illness.  The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs.Jacob Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter was united in marriage on December 20, 1899 to MissAlice Hayes by whom the following children he is survived;  Mrs.Ildreth Coultas, Raymond, Eleanor, Malissa, Roger, Maywood, Margaretand Burdette. He is also survived by the following brothers andsisters;  Orlando, Daniel, Bernard, Van, Mrs. Julia Lester, Mrs.Margaret Giesey, Mrs. Nellie Wells and Mrs. Ruth Brown.
Funeral services conducted by Rev. Robert Friel were held in CalaisMethodist Church of which he was a member, Monday afternoon, andinterment was made in the Calais Cemetery, in charge of the BrubachFuneral Home at Summerfield.   Thursday 27 Aug. 1942 Noble CountyLeader Caldwell Ohio.

She was born in Monroe County May 6, 1910,  a daughter of Ross H. andRachel Alice Hayes Carpenter.  She had been employed as a school cook.Miss Carpenter was a member of the Calais United Methodist Chruch.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Ildrith Coultas, of Summerfield;Miss Melissa Carpenter, of Paris, Kentucky and Mrs. Margaret Delong ofLewisville;  three brothers, Roger Carpenter of Caldwell;  MaywoodCarpenter of Woodsfield and Burdette Carpenter of Summerfield.  Twobrothers preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at one o'clockin Calais United Methodist Chruch, with Rev. Myron Guiler officiating.Burial will be in the Calais Cemetery with the Brubach Funeral Home ofSummerfield in charge.  28 Jan. 1969 Monroe County Beacon WoodsfieldOhio.
