She was born May 21, 1899, in Calais, daughter of Albert and EllaMorris Carpenter.  She was a Methodist by faith.
She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Helen Albaugh of Cambridge and MaryMahoney of Canton;  two sons, Roy Stephens of Cambridge and CarlStephens of Barnesville;  one step-son Kenneth Stephens of Navarre;13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren;  and fourstep-grandchildren.

Joseph Edward Stephens

The death of Joseph E. Stephens 69, of 511 North Street occurred inthe Barnesville Hospital, Friday April 29, 1960 at 12:05 A.M. after alengthy illness.
He was born May 21, 1890 at Temperanceville, the son of William andLucetta Stephens and was married to Miss Mae Carpenter, May 4, 1918,who survives.  Also besides his widow, he leaves two daughters,  Mrs.Helen Albaugh of the home;  Mrs. Mary Mahoney, Mansfield;  three sons,Roy and Carl of the home and Kenneth of New Philadelphia;  twentygrandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Other survivors include threesisters,  Mrs. Florence Lashley, Zanesville;  Mrs. Goldie Starr,Baileys Mills and Mrs. Gladys Carpenter, Barnesville;  also twobrothers, Claude and James, Crooksville.
Mr. Stephens was a member of the Methodist Church.
Funeral services were conducted at the Campbell Funeral Home, Sundayat 1:30 P.M. with Evangelist James Gallagher in charge.  Burial wasmade in Crestview Cemetery.  Thursday 5 May 1960 BarnesvilleWhetstone.

BARNESVILLE--Services have been scheduled for 1 P.M. Saturday atCampbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home for Roy Edward Stephens, 62, ofCambridge, who died Tuesday evening (March 6, 1990) at Red CarpetHealth Care Center.
Herman Giesey will officiate and burial will be in Crestview Cemetery.

He was born Feb. 29, 1928, in Belmont County, son of the late JosephE. and Louisa Mae Carpenter Stephens. He was a retired employee ofConrail and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member ofByesville VFW 3760 and Cambridge Eagles Club.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

SUMMERFIELD---Manoah "Noah" Carpenter, 69, of 206 S. Main St., died at9:45 A.M. Friday (Feb. 25, 1994) Guernsey Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 12, 1924, at Summerfield, son of the late John O. andCivilla Carpenter Carpenter.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator and member of InternationalUnion of Operating Engineers Local 18, Cleveland.
Mr. Carpenter was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and he was a prisoner of war in Germany during the war.  He was an active member of Caldwell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4721 and American Legion Post145 Summerfield, where he recently was recognized for his 45-yearmembership.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Toohey and threebrothers, John, Jack and Johnny Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter leaves his wife, Dorothy Warner Carpenter;  a son SteveCarpenter of Caldwell;  one daughter, Mrs. Allen (Kathy) Spence ofSummerfield;  two sisters, Ruth Spence of Summerfield and Mary Tiltonof Caldwell;  two brothers, David Carpenter of Dayton and JimmyCarpenter of Cambridge;  three grandchildren and one great-grandson;three step-grandchildren and two step-great-granddaughters;  severalnieces and nephews.

Pvt. Manoah H. Carpenter, aged twenty years, reported missing inaction August 29, in Italy, is now a German prisoner, according toword received from the War Department last Friday evening by hisparents, Oliver and Civilla Carpenter, of Route 1.  He was on combatduty in North Africa from some time and later in Italy.  TheCarpenters have three other sons in the service, John, at WrightField, Dayton;  Carson of "Jack." a paratrooper, who is in a hospitalat Camp Polk, La., and David, who enlisted in the navy and recentlycompleted his basic training at Great Lakes, ILL., and is now atNorfolk, Va.

David D. Carpenter, 69, of Beavercreek, passed away Friday (March 1,1996) at his residence.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Noah, Jack, Whiteyand Jimmy.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ann Carpenter of Beavercreek;two daughters, Debbie Witt and Kristina Copeland, both of Beavercreek;two sons and daughter-in-law,  David Bruce and Connie Carpenter andJohn Michael Carpenter all of Beavercreek;  sisters, Ruth Spence ofNew Concord and Mary Tilton of Caldwell and Virginia Toohey ofBarnesville;  grandchildren, Michael, Heather, Genevieve, Kenneth,Charles and Madeline.
He was a lifelong member of the Pipefitters Union Local 162 was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II.  (Born 24 Sept. 1926)

He was a member of First Baptist Church,  Cambridge Lodge 66 F&AM,Scottish Rite Valley of Cambridge,  VFW Post 2901, Cambridge andFraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 386.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.
He leaves his wife,  Barbara A. Callihan Carpenter of Cambridge, whomhe married Dec. 10, 1960;  two sons and daughters-in-law,  Jerry M.and Jodi Carpenter of Columbus,  James M. and Jennifer Carpenter ofCambridge;  five daughters,  Mrs. Randall (Cheryl) Hebb of Cambridge,Mrs. Larry (Janet) Obrain, Mrs. Kenneth (Jannen) Wise,  Jane Smith andMrs. James (Janice) Dimmerling, all of Noble County;  step-daughter,Mary Ann Lafollette of Grove City;  step-son and daughter-in-law,James and Suzie Lafollette of Springfield;  brother David Campbell ofDayton;  two sisters, Ruth Spence of Norwich and Mary Tilton ofCaldwell;  12 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was born July 30, 1908, near Carlisle, son of the late Charles W.and Nancy Belle DeVolld Spence.
He was retired from Ohio Department of Transportation Division 10,Marietta and attended Mt. Tabor Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Hugo and FrankSpence and a infant sister, Augusta Spence.
Mr. Spence leaves his wife, Ruth V. Carpenter Spence, whom he marriedDec. 20, 1937;  a daughter, Mrs. Lynn (Kay) Elliott of Norwich;  threegranddaughters and two step-granddaughters.

Charles Tilton

CALDWELL---Charles F. Tilton, 70, of Caldwell died Saturday (Feb. 20,1999) at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge.
He was born April 12, 1928, in Marietta, son of the late Ford andFreda Warfield Tilton.
Mr. Tilton was a banker for many years at the First National Bank inCaldwell and Caldwell Savings and Loan.  He graduated in 1946 fromCaldwell High School.  He was a U.S. Army veteran,  having served inthe Korean Conflict in the Infantry.
He leaves his wife,  Mary Carpenter Tilton,  whom he married on Sept.3, 1955;  two sons, Greg Tilton of Caldwell, Kevin Tilton ofZanesville;  two daughters, Lisa Palmer and Lynn Hess, both ofCambridge;  five grandchildren,  Bryan and Carrie Tilton,  Kelly Hess,Carly and Cameron Palmer; and a uncle, James Warfield of Massillon.
Military graveside services will be 1 P.M. at Olive Cemetery with Rev.Edwin Urschitz officiating.  There will be no visitation.  Monday 22Feb. 1999 Jeffersonian.

Mrs. Toohey, the wife of Joseph Toohey, died Monday at 3:50 P.M. atthe home.  She was born Jan. 6, 1911 at Calais,  a daughter of Johnand Civilla Carpenter.  She was a member of the First ChristianChurch.
Besides her husband she leaves six children, Joseph Jr., Sylvia,Jerry, James, Jan and Jay of the home;  six brothers, John and DavidCarpenter, of Dayton,  Carson and Monoah Carpenter of Kopell, Pa., andJoseph Jr. of the U. Born in Bailey's Mills,  Jan. 21, 1900, he was a son of the late Johnand Anna VanSickle Toohey.  He was a member of Barnesville FirstChristian Church,  the FOE 937, Barnesville and the VFW, and was aretired auto mechanic and contact mail carrier.
Preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Toohey,  Mr. Tooheyleaves his wife, Ila Ruby Toohey;  four sons, Joe M. Toohey Jr., andJerry, Jan and Jay, all of Barnesville;  one daughter, Mrs. SylviaHall, Corona, Calif.;  three step-daughters, Mrs. Rosemary Olshawsky,Senecaville,  Mrs. Nancy Dye, Canton and Mrs. Ruth Shilling,Hendrysburg;  one step-son, Charles McGee, Barnesville;  10grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, one step--great-grandchild;  onebrother Harry of Barnesville and one sister, Mrs. Winifred Helling,Elwood City, Pa.  One son, James died in 1958.  Eleven brothers andtwo sisters are also deceased.

He leaves his wife, Betty Ann Toohey; two brothers, Joseph M. TooheyJr. and Jan M. Toohey, both of Barnesville; and a sister, Sylvia A.Litz, of Columbus.
