Alonzo Zane "AZ" Wade, age 78 of Canton, passed away Thursday April28, 2005 in the residence after and extended illness. A veteran ofWWII serving with the US Army. A retired employee of the HooverCompany. A member of React, FOE McKinley Arie #2370, Masonic Templeand Loyal Order of the Moose Canton Lodge #233. Preceded in death byhis wife, Lucille Wade; parents, Ivan and Ada Wade. Survived bysister, Thelma June Orwick of Massillon; two nieces, Charlotte Angererof Navarre, Eileen Raymondi of Canton; son, Jeffrey (Linda) Wade ofMassillon; grandchildren, Jordan, Angelia and Amanda; great grandson,Jakob. Sylvan Charles Wise

SUMMERFIELD---Services will be conducted by the Rev. Bill Pickenpaughat 11 A.M. Tuesday at Bruach-Walters Funeral Home for Sylvan C. Wise,64, of 51205 State Route 279,  who died Friday (Nov. 12, 1993) as thethe result of a fire at his home.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the Belmont VeteransCouncil in Calais Cemetery.
Mr. Wise was born 11 July 1929,  Monroe County,  son of the late Johnand Katherine Wehr Wise.  He was a retired construction worker, aProtestant by faith,  and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.  Hewas also a member of Laborers Union Local 639, Marietta,  BarnesvilleVFW Post 2792 and the Batesville American Legion.
Mr. Wise preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Paul and JohnWise Jr.  and a sister Shirley Leach.
Mr. Wise leaves his wife,  Lila B. Carpenter Wise;  four sons, JerryWise of the home,  Stephen and Robert Wise both of Summerfield and KimWise of Sarahsville;  two sisters,  Sarah Snyder of Lewisville andLavina Woodby of Townsend, Tenn;  three brothers Robert Wise ofSummerfield, Royden Wise of Caldwell and Jerald Wise of Woodsfield;one-granddaughter and a step-grandson;  several nieces and nephews.

Pvt. Sylvan C. Wise, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wise,  Route 2,Summerfield, Ohio, is severing with the 7th Infantry Division inKorea.
The division occupies a strong bunker and pillbox defense line on themountains east-central sector of the front.  Tank-infantry patrolsfrom the division move out daily to probe and raid Red defense in the"Punchbowl" area.
Private Wise,  a rifleman in Company E. of the 17th "Buffalo" InfantryRegiment, arrived in Korea Feb. 10, 1952.
He attended Calais high school and was a farmer before entering theArmy in August 1951.  He received his basic training at ScholfieldBarracks, Hawaii.  Thursday 13 March 1952 Noble County Leader.

Pfc. Sylvan Wise has returned to Camp Atterbury, Ind., after spendinga 30-day furlough with his family and friends. Pfc. Wise returned tothe United States on Dec. 19, 1952 after spending nine months with theSeventh Infantry Division in the front lines of Korean. He was woundedin October, 1952, and received the Purple Heart. From Camp Atterburghe was assigned to Fort Ord, Calif. Woodsfield News. Monday 9 Feb.1953 Cambridge Jeffersonian Cambridge Ohio.


2359. Harold Grant Carpenter

SUMMERFIELD----Services for Harold Grant Carpenter, 51, LewisvilleR.D. 2, will be at 1 P.M. Friday at Calais Community Church.  Dr.Myron Guiler will officiate and burial will be in Calais Cemetery.
Friends may call at Brubach Funeral Home, Summerfield, from 7 to 9P.M. today.
A farmer and construction worker,  he died Wednesday morning (March11, 1981) in Summit Township,  Monroe County, of an apparentself-inflicted gunshot wound,  verified by the Monroe County Coroner.He was dismissed from a Zanesville hospital the evening prior to hisdeath.
Mr. Carpenter was born May 31, 1929, in Seneca Township,  MonroeCounty,  the son of Earl and Edna Moore Carpenter,  Summerfield R.D. 1He was a member of Local 639 Laborers International Union at Marietta,and was a veteran of the Korean War.
In addition to his parents,  Mr. Carpenter leaves his wife,  theformer Lavina Wise;  three daughters,  Mrs. Kenneth (Debra) McVicker,Summerfield,  Sharon and Deidra of the home;  three sons, Lesile, Markand Robin of the home;  two grandchildren;  one sister,  Mrs. Sylvan(Lila) Wise,  Summerfield R.D.1 and two brothers,  Bradley of QuakerCity R.D.1 an Erine of Barnesville.  Tuesday 12 March 1981 CambridgeJeffersonian.

The vows were exchanged at the home of Minister J.V.A. Traylor onEastern Ave,  in Woodsfield,  who officiated at he double ringceremony at three o'clock in the afternoon.
The bride chose for her wedding a light blue suit with blackaccessories.  Pinned to her shoulder line was a corsage of red andwhite carnations.  She carried out the tradition of something old,new, borrowed and blue, and penny in her shoe.
The new Mrs. Carpenter attended the Calais and Summerfield schools.
Mr. Carpenter is a graduate of Batesville High School class of 1947.He served in the U.S. Army twenty-one months,  eighteen months ofwhich ere spent in Japan and Korea.

She was born Oct. 7, 1933, near Calais, daughter of the late John andKathryn Wehr Wise.
Mrs. Woodby was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her firsthusband, Harold G. Carpenter on March 11, 1981; her second husband,Herbert Woodby on Feb. 4, 2004; two sisters, Shirley Leach and SaraSnyder; and five brothers, Robert, Sylvan, Kenneth, Paul and John Jr.Wise.
She leaves three daughters, Debra Carpenter of Belle Valley, Sharon(Jeff) Cline of Summerfield and Deidra Leasure of Sarahsville; threesons, Leslie Carpenter of Summerfield, Mark (Rhoda) Carpenter ofLewisville and Robin (Chris) Carpenter of Woodsfield; two brothers,Royden Wise of Caldwell and Jerald Wise of Woodsfield; 13grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Earl J. Moore, 65, of Quaker City Route 147, died Thursday at home. Hewas born May 16, 1926 in Noble County, a son of the late Oscar andElla Roe Moore.  He was a retired State Highway Department employeeand an Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Starr Moore; three sons, Michael ofBatesville, Jeff of Kennonsburg, and Larry of Zanesville; one brother,Denver Moore of Canton; five grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. Instead friends are asked to come to thehome of the family following private services at 2 P.M. today withPastor Sturman Moore officiating. Obituary:
Evangelist Ronald W. Bates, 66, of 624 East Cross St, Summerfield,died upon arrival at 12:26 P.M. June 19, 1995 in the South-easternOhio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge.  He was born at Byesvilleon September 19, 1928, a son of the late Hayes and Ollie Moore Bates.
He was an Evangelist for various Churches of Christ throughout thearea for 35 years and was a member of the Summerfield Church of Christin Summerfield.  He was a retired employee for Glacier-Vandervell,Caldwell, with 36 years of services, and was a former school busdriver for 11 years with the Noble Local School District atSarahsville.  His greatest work after serving Christ was that ofloving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving are his wife, Irene Sorg Bates whom he married on June 17,1948; two sons, Wayne D Bates and his wife, Sonja of Sharon, Ohio andDanny L Bates of Sarahsville; four daughters Beverly D West and herhusband, Terry of Jerusalem; Becky D Rine and her husband, Tim ofJudsonia, Arkansas; Brenda D Bates Gibson of Summerfield and Betsy DWilliams and her husband, Kevin of Summerfield; one brother, Meredith"Buster" Bates of Tampa, Florida.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister,Vivian Feldner.
Friends were received at the Brubach-Watters Funeral Home, 202 MainSt, Summerfield, June 22.  Friends then received at the SummerfieldChurch of Christ, Summerfield, until time of services June 23, withEvangelists Bernard Mason and Dana Morrison officiating.  Burialfollowed at the convenience of the family.

CALDWELL---Mrs. Vivian Feldner, Caldwell R.D. 4, died at 2 P.M.Tuesday (Aug. 20, 1974) in Good Samaritan Medical Center, Zanesville,following an illness.
Having resided in Caldwell most of her life,  Mrs. Feldner was bornJuly 5, 1921, the daughter of Mrs. Ollie Moore Bates, Summerfield andthe late Denver Bates.  Mrs. Feldner was a member of Main St. Churchof Christ here.
In addition to her mother, she leaves her husband, Ronald;  twodaughters, Mrs. David (Judy) Milligan, Caldwell and Mrs. Douglas(Nancy) Lair, Athens, Ga.;  one son, Stephen, of the home;  twograndchildren;  and two brothers, Ronald Bates, Summerfield andMeredith Bates, Canton.

Ronald E. Feldner

Ronald E. Feldner, 78, of Caldwell, died Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001) atSoutheastern Medical Center in Cambridge.
He was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Noble County, son of the late Leslie andMyrle (Mallett) Feldner.
Mr. Feldner was a retired employee of B & N Coal Company, Dexter Cityand a World War II Army veteran, having served in the South Pacific.He was a member of VFW Post 2910 in Cambridge.
In addition of his parents he was preceded in death by his wife,Vivian E. (Bates) Feldner, who died Aug. 20, 1974 and a son Larry.
He leaves a son, Steve (Peggy) Feldner of Aronldsville, GA.;  twodaughters, Judy (Dave) Milligan of Caldwell and Nancy (Doug) Lair ofAthens, GA.;  six grandchildren and three-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 P.M. today McVay-Perkins Funeral Home.  The Rev.William Pickenpaugh will officiate.  Burial will follow in OliveCemetery, Caldwell.  Sunday 4 Feb. 2001 Jeffersonian.


2367. Samuel Donald Mercer

Samuel Donald Mercer, 44, of Jerusalem Route 1, a former employee ofGoodyear Aircraft Company in Akron died Monday morning,  Sept. 16,1968, at 6:30 o'clock in Barnesville General Hospital where he hadbeen a patient several days with a heart condition.
He was born October 13, 1923 in Monroe County, a son of Mrs. OcieCarpenter Mercer of Jerusalem Route 1 and the late Chester Mercer.
Mr. Mercer was an Army Veteran serving in the late 1940s.
In addition to his mother he is survived by his widow, the formerFrances Mellinger;  a daughter, Bonnie of the home;  a son Mike ofJerusalem;  five sisters,  Mrs. Bonnie Egger and Mrs. Martha LouBetts, both of Marysville, Ohio;  Mrs. Lodena Christman,  Mrs. NancyCrum and Mrs. Emma Bates, all of Jerusalem;  and an uncle, RoyCarpenter.
Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at one o'clock inthe Brubach Funeral Home at Summerfield with Rev. Richard Perkinsofficiating.  Burial was in the Calais Cemetery.  Thursday 19 Sept.1968 Monroe County Beacon.


Frances Mellinger

Wed 21 July 1971 Times Recorder, Zanesville, Ohio
Two first degree murder charges were filed Tuesday afternoon after ahit-skip auto struck and killed two persons Monday night on Ohio 513in northern Noble County.  Two other persons were injured in theincident.
Named in the affidavit was a woman identified as Betty K. Barrett,also known as Betty Hashman, 25, of South Chestnut street,Barnesville.
Dead at the scene were Mrs. Frances Mellinger Mercer, 40, of HarperRidge, Woodsfield, and Mrs. Phyllis Alberta Barrett, 39 of Quaker CityRoute 2, whose body was undiscovered until early Tuesday whenpatrolmen returned to the scene.  The two Barrett women are notrelated.
Injured were Miss Bonnie Barrett, 19, daughter of Mrs. PhyllisBarrett; and Alton Baker, 34, of Quaker City Route 2.  They were bothlisted in good condition Tuesday at Barnesville Hospital.
The Cambridge Post of the Highway Patrol was in charge of theinvestigation which led to filing of the murder charges.  Authoritiessaid persons at the scene claimed the auto was swerved toward thevictims.  The affidavit was filed through the office of Noble CountyProsecutor Lucien Young Jr.
The Barret woman charged had been released earlier in the day on$1,000 bond posted on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident.The murder charges were filed later in the day, and Noble CountySheriff Richard Fogle and a Highway Patrol officer re arrested her ather home last night.  She was being held in the Noble County jailwithout bond.  She was scheduled to appear in Noble County court at 10a,m, today for arraignment.
Patrolmen said the four victims had apparently left their auto parkedalong the highway and were standing alongside the road when struck.The driver abandoned the auto a short distance away and fled.  TheBarrett woman was arrested a short time later.
Scene of the accident was between Quaker City and Batesville.
Mrs. Phyllis Barret was born March 3, 1932, in Sewellsville, adaughter of Dexter and Zelma Butler Baker of Sewellsville.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Barrett is survived by her husband,Ross E Barrett, two sons, Ross Jennings and Harlan Edward both of thehome, two daughters, Mrs. Sharon K. Dornon of Quaker City Route 2 andBonnie Jean of the home, seven sisters, Mrs. Ruth Scott of Bethesda,Mrs. John Tipton and Mrs. Leonard Armstrong both of Piedmont Route 1,Mrs. Clark Smith of Sarahsville, Mrs. Freda Cunard and Miss SarahBaker, both of Barnesville Route 2, and Mrs. Paul McMillen ofBarnesville, two brothers, Donald E. Baker of Barnesville Route 2 andDexter Baker Jr. of Piedmont Route 1; and three grandchildren.
Friends may call after 3 P.M. today at Campbell-Plumly Funeral Home inBarnesville where services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday withRev. Robert Merritt officiating.
Burial will be in the Sewellsville Cemetery.
Mrs. Mercer's husband, Donald, died in September 1968.
Among survivors are a son, Michael, and a daughter, Miss Bonnie Mercerof near Jerusalem.
The body was taken to Brubach Funeral Home in Summerfield.

MALAGA----Ellis Mercer, 56, of Malaga, died at his home Friday evening(June 3, 1963).   He was born in Summerfield on Sept. 26, 1927, son ofChester and Ocie Carpenter Mercer.
He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Barnesville.He was a trustee of Malaga Township and operated a general store andservices station.
In addition to his wife, Leota Stephen Mercer at home, he leaves ason, Steve of Malaga;  a brother, James of Jerusalem;  four sisters,Mrs. Bonnie Egger of Marysville, Mrs. Lodena Christman of Jerusalem,Mrs. Nancy Crum of Jerusalem, and Mrs. Emma Bates of Jerusalem;  onegrandson.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Marysville - Mrs. Martha L. Betts, 44, of Westerville, native ofChatfield, O., died at 2:15 p.m. Monday at Riverside Hospital inColumbus after a four day illness.
Mrs. Betts was born April 11, 1931 and was the daughter of Mrs. OcieCarpenter Mercer of Jerusaleum.
She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Marysville.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, John; a son,Terry of Marysville; a daughter, Miss Joan Betts of Westerville; agrandchild; four sisters, Mrs. Bonnie Egger of Marysville, Mrs. LodenaChristman, Mrs. Nancy Crum and Mrs. Emma Bates, all of Jerusaleum andtwo brothers, Ellis Mercer of Malaga and James of Jerusaleum.
