NOTE:
His children, John, William, James and Jesse inherited property under his
will by virtue of which they had the vote in shire elections. In 1832 John has
a Bishop's Street address but he, William and James have freehold houses in
Carpenter's Lane. Jesse's property is in Matilda Place Foleshill and he has
Nova Scotia gardens Bethnal Green London as his address. John and Jesse are
not on the voters' list for 1836.
It seems quite likely that William had four wives, the first two dying young
and the third soon after giving birth to her sixth child in 1801. His fourth
wife bore him two daughters and perhaps under her influence, the surviving
children were baptised in 1812 and 1813 together with, in 1812, her first
daughter.  Charles name does not appear previously in the registers but John,
Sophia and Rebecca had in fact been baptised before and the ages of the two
girls, 19 and 22 are written there giving a vital clue about the late
baptisms in the family.
After peace was made with France in 1815, the ribbon industry was facing
problems and William's life as a weaver probably saw more ups and downs than
any of his predecessors. Weavers flocked to the trade in boom times and stayed
even in bad ones, depressing the prices obtainable. It was in this period that
both Foleshill and Bedworth became notorious for crime, violence and
immorality. William, though unable himself even to sign his name, saw to it
that his sons could read and write, but could not bring himself to mention his
son Charles in his will. Charles was convicted of burglary in 1832 and
transported to Van Dieman's Land. Frances, the wife of his other son, John,
was bound over to keep the peace after she had assaulted Jane Downs, a
neighbour. John's second marriage at the age of 64 took place just in time to
allow his 25 year old wife to have his son legitimately.
William's will bequeathed houses to all his children including Sarah Rushen
who is almost certainly the wife Charles left behind him but bearing, by 1839,
the name of her new common law husband.
