Notes

99. William Carpenter

OCCUPATION: Silk Weaver.
DEATH:Sheila's notes omitted year - context suggests 1895, 6 or 7 - aged 82.

THE COBDEN TREATY 1860
William saw the silk ribbon industry in Coventry collapse in his lifetime as a
result of the removal of the import duties on silk ribbons from abroad in
1860. The survival of so many of his large family - which included in 1861 his
young half brother John, child of his father's second marriage - is a mark of
success in itself. But land, houses, the freedom of the city, the right to
vote all went as the fortunes of the independent ribbon weavers declined.
Neither William nor his father John who died in 1868 left a will - the only
ones in a long line of the family not to do so. Perhaps they held on to some
of the land that the family had received by the Inclosure Act as William's
grandson, William started a printing business on part of what had been
referred to as plot 75.

E-MAIL: Sat, 25 Sep 1999 From: "mike wilkins"
Dear John Carpenter.
I was born Pat Carpenter in Southampton, England in 1935. My Father was
George Carpenter, born in London, England in 1902. My Father's siblings were
Joe, Bill and I believe one or two sisters..My Grandfather was William Henry
Carpenter who died at the age of 40 while undergoing surgery. I believe, but
have no proof, that he was married to a Mary McCarthy from Ireland who also
died at about the same age. My Father and his brothers were raised in an
orphanage run by Roman Catholic priests in London, England.
I am just starting out on the family tree. Can you assist me in any way.
I do not believe that my system has (Gedcom), please advise.
