The Battle of Montre Cassino and the Abbey were taken by Polish Forces on 18 May 1944.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Monte_Cassino#Battle_2
In the period from June to August 1944, the Allies advanced beyond Rome, taking Florence and closing up on the Gothic Line.[49] This last major defensive line ran from the coast some 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Pisa, along the jagged Apennine Mountains chain between Florence and Bologna to the Adriatic coast, just south of Rimini. In order to shorten the Allied lines of communication for the advance into Northern Italy, the Polish II Corps advanced towards the port of Ancona and, after a month-long battle, succeeded in capturing it on 18 July.
During Operation Olive, which commenced on 25 August, the Gothic Line defences were penetrated on both the Fifth and Eighth Army fronts; but, there was no decisive breakthrough.

A Short History of The Royal Leicestershire Regiment
Part 4
PART IV - THE SECOND WORLD WAR: 1939-1945
At the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, 1st Battalion was in India and the 2nd Battalion in Palestine, engaged in the Arab rebellion. At home the two Territorial Battalions, the 1/5thand the 2/5th, had been mobilised. By the time the war had ended the Regiment’s battalions had served in action in every theatre of the war, a record which is claimed to be unique.
...
2/5th Battalion, also mobilised in 1939, went to France in 1940 as part of the 46th Division, and, after being evacuated through Dunkirk, it spent 2½ years in England. In January 1943 the Battalion took part in the 1st Army’s landing in North Africa, and heavy casualties were sustained in the Kassarine. The Battalion next saw action at Salerno in Italy, followed by actions at the crossing of the Volturna and Teano Rivers, and at Mount Camino. It spent the first half of 1944 in the Middle East, training and re-equipping and being brought up to strength. It returned to Italy in time to take part in the battle against the Gothic Line in August 1944. In December 1944 the Battalion was moved by air to Athens where it took part in the fighting and remained until the Greek Government was restored in the Epirus. It then returned to Italy and after the Armistice was moved into Austria, where it remained until disbandment.MILITARY:

In December 1942, it departed for North Africa and fought in the campaign in Tunisia. In 1943, it landed at Salerno and fought in Italy through 1943 and into 1944. The division was then given a three-month respite in Africa and the Middle East before it returned to fight in Italy during the campaign to break through the Gothic Line.

The Gothic Line (German: Gotenstellung; Italian: Linea Gotica) was a German and Italian defensive line of the Italian Campaign of World War II. The Battle of Gemmano has been nicknamed by some historians as the "Cassino of the Adriatic". After 11 assaults between 4 and 13 September [1944] (first by British 56th Division and then British 46th Division), it was the turn of Indian 4th Division who after a heavy bombardment made the 12th attack at 03:00 on 15 September and finally carried and secured the German defensive positions.
[Comment: I cite this because of the comment "Cassino of the Adriatic" and this may have cause the confusion of where Private Carpenter may have been killed.)MAP:

On the far right of this map, near FossomDrone, you will see the 46Br (46th British) Division (XX on top of a box) that is an Infantry (X in a box) unit. The dark blue line shows their advance through the German 71st Infantry Division heading toward the dark red line that represents the German Gothic (aka Green) defensive line. That main line of advanced was about 15 kilometers inland from the coast.
The British reached this German defensive line on 30 August 1940. They then began attacked those defensives.
Private Carpenter was likely killed in action somewhere near the Foglia River trying to fight his way into the German densive works north of the river. Be aware that crossing this river valley put the attackers in direct enemy fire and indirect fire from artillery.
PLEASE NOTE:
The city of Pesaro is where the red line end on the east coast of Italy aka as the Adriatic Sea side of Italy.
The Montecchio War Cemetery is only a kilometer or two north of the Foglia River.-----------
