Additional information about Paternal Line:
Not long after the end of The Thirty Years' War (1648), Michael Zimmerman
moved from Steffisburg, Canton of Bern (Switzerland) to Sulzfeld where he
worked on the Rabenperg estate. Today, we call it Ravensburg. This
translocation was probably due to the need for workers in southwest Germany
due to the great loss of life during the war. Hans Christopher Zimmerman
emigrated from Germany to US about 1717 and settled in VA.ANCESTRY:

Subject: Re: Another possible Group 5 line that ties back to 1607?
Hi John and All,I'm back. Wow, this could give us some good leads. It takes me back to some of my Germanna Colonies NOTES written by a John Blankenbaker. One of his writings combined a large number of his earlier Germanna Notes along with many emails which was titled, "Descendants of Michael Zimmerman" and dated, September 6, 2004. Michael is shown to have been married two times. His second wife was Elisabetha Albrecht, and they were married on May 1, 1666. His first wife was recorded only as Benedicta and she died on October 4, 1665 in Sulzfeld, Baden. Michael and Benedicta had three children: Johannes, b. 1637; Christian, b. 1649; and Michael, b. 1651. There are a large number of Germanna Notes that show this same Michael Zimmerman as being born in 1607 and also 1617. I assume that the original document or source could have been read either way since Blankenbaker has done that at different times in different Germanna Notes. However, Guy Zimmerman (124510) records his Michael Zimmerman's birth year as 1617. ...

Andrew M. Carpenter
Birth: 20 Dec 1822 Cooper County, Missouri, USA
Death: 5 Mar 1900 (aged 77) Macon County, Missouri, USA
Burial: Shiloh Cemetery, Love Lake, Macon County, Missouri, USA
Memorial #: 142600279
Bio:
The following was taken from the 1884 HISTORY OF RANDOLPH and MACON COUNTIES, MISSOURI, pages 944 & 945.
ANDREW M. CARPENTER
Farmer and Stock-raiser, Post office, La Plata.
---Mr. Carpenter's father, Samuel Carpenter, was one of the pioneer settlers of Missouri. He came to Cooper county from Kentucky as early as 1819, and in the winter of 1821-23 was married thence to Miss Sarah Langly, whose parents were from Tennessee and were among the first settlers of that county. They made their permanent home in Cooper county, and the father died there in 1868, one of the respected citizens of the county. In 1849 he went to California, making the trip there overland and returning the following year by the Isthmus and New Orleans. Except during that absence and one year in Benton county, he lived in Cooper county continuously until his death. Andrew M. was born on the farm in Cooper county, December 20, 1822. He was reared to habits of industry on the farm and received a common school education. After reaching his majority he carried the mail between Jefferson City and Versailles for about 10 months. October 28, 1841, he was married to Miss Mary A. Gilbreath, a daughter of Hugh Gilbreath, of Cooper county. He then moved to his present farm, the land of which he had previously bought. Here he went to work to make himself a home and establish himself in life. Industry and good management have prospered him. He bought and entered land from time to time until he now has nearly 400 acres, over half of which is under fence. His place is comfortably and substantially improved, and he is otherwise well situated in life. On the 26th of September, 1866, Mr. Carpenter had the misfortune to lose his wife. After her death she left him six children: Flora A., wife of Daniel Coates; James C., Samuel C., George A., John H. and William L. To his present wife Mr. Carpenter was married February 28, 1867. Mrs. Carpenter, whose maiden name was Leah D. White, was a daughter of Jesse White, of this county, but formerly of Kentucky. They have six children: Jesse W., Oscar S., Mattie B., Hattie E., Gabriel B., Lucy C. Mr. and Mrs. C. are members of the Baptist Church at La Plata, and he is a member of the A.F and A.M. at that place. Mr. Carpenter has served for nearly five years as justice of the peace.LA PLATA HOME PRESS, La Plata, Missouri
March 29, 1900
A. M. CARPENTER
Editor, Home Press, Another good man has crossed the river and now dwells in the spirit land.
---Deacon A. M. Carpenter died at one o'clock a.m. March 15 at his home about three miles south of La Plata, Missouri. Brother Carpenter was born in Cooper county, this state, December 20, 1822. His first marriage was to Mary Ann Gilbreath October 28, 1847. The result of this marriage was two girls and five boys. His second marriage was to Leah Day Wright, February 28, 1867. From this union there were three girls and four boys.
---He was converted in 1848. His membership was with the Blanket Grove Baptist Church, then with the La Plata Church and finally with Love Lake Baptist Church of which he was a worthy member until death. When health and circumstances permitted, he was a faithful church goer. Hearty in every good work, he used his pocket book and did it cheerfully.
---The writer was his pastor three years at Love Lake and there was no more sunshine at any home than there was at the house of A. M. Carpenter.
---His funeral was preached from Psalms 116:15.
---He was a Master Mason and the Lodge of AF & AM at La Plata honored their departed brother with a solemn and impressive burial service.
---The children at home will miss him. We all will miss him, but glad when we think that he is among the angels.

Subject: Samuel Carpenter
Hi Kathy,John forwarded your email to me. Yes, I am doing fine and have not changed my email address. In a few days I will be celebrating the 37th anniversary of my 39th birthday. We were emailing back in December 2013 and January 2014. You were loooking for the father of your Samuel Carpenter who had a farm in Missouri and passed away in 1868. He had an older son named Henry Carpenter. Based upon this information and the closeness of our DNA, we located a Samuel Carpenter with a birth year of about 1793 and died 30 April 1868. Basically, there were two Samuel Carpenters with the same birth year found in Robert C. Carpenter's book, "Carpenters A Plenty" as shown below:1. Samuel carpenter (C36?), b. abt. 1736, m. 4 Feb 1822, d. 30 Apr 1868.Spouse: Sarah LangleyHis father is recorded as Christopher 'Christian' Carpenter (C3), b. abt. 1746.Source: "Carpenters A Plenty" page 57-582. Samuel Carpenter (C95?), b. abt. 1793, m. 4 Feb 1922, d. 30 Apr 1868.Spouse: Sarah LangleyHis father is recorded as Henry carpenter (C9)Source: "Carpenters A Plenty" page 245Census information used by Robert C. Carpenter is from Cooper Co., Missouri, where they show Samuel Carpenter in 1830 as a male 30-39. In the same location for 1840 they show Samuel Carpenter as a male 40-49, likewise also in Cooper Co., for 1850 they show Samuel Carpenter as age 57, and in 1860 they show Saml Carpenter as age 60. Robert's analysis was that, "If the 1850 census age of 57 was correct, then he was the son of Christopher 'Christian' Carpenter, and if the 1860 census age of 60 was correct, then he may very likely have been son of Henry Carpenter".Actually, the Christopher and Henry Carpenter noted above are brothers and sons of Christian 'CZ' Carpenter. I descend from this same Christian 'CZ' Carpenter which helps to explain why Samuel T. Carpenter and I have a close DNA match.I have not been able to find additional data confirming one way or other the father of Samuel Carpenter. However, Robert also mentioned, "Mrs. Nina Caines of Versailles, MO., located a deed reference from Henry Carpenter to Samuel Carpenter after 1840, Cooper Co., MO. Unfortunately, she was not able to abstract the deed." Further research in Cooper County, Missouri could possibly locate this deed and possibly identify the father of Samuel Carpenter. You may be able to get a copy of the above mentioned deed by contacting the Cooper County, Missouri - County Clerk, or by finding a relative in the area or a local genealogical researcher that could secure this information for you.Hope this has helped. Please let me know how this turns out. Thanks,Bob Carpenter-------------------------------------------------------

Noted in the book "Carpenters A Plenty" by Robert C. Carpenter. See page 972.A descendant of this Joseph Carpenter-13138 (Horace) was Y-DNA tested via the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project and found to match genetically with Group 5, a Zimmerman line from Switzerland. And not Group 3 of the Rehoboth, MA line as cited in the Carpenter Memorial (CM). This Joseph has been removed as a son of Hezekiah Carpenter-12823 from the CM. ID (RINs) numbers after the surname reflect assigned numbers in the main Carpenter Cousins database.
There had been a concern that the Joseph in the CM and the genealogical descendants assigned were done in error. This has been confirmed and this is the reason for this note. May 2015 JRC

John and all,
I am hoping that a male member of this family will have their DNA tested.
The lineage of this Joseph back to William Carpenter of English descent has
been contested. Joseph Zimmerman, whose brother was Samuel, resided in
upper Cleveland County, NC. They married Eaker sisters. All were German.
Joseph and Samuel are not direct descendants of Hans Zimmerman of Group 5
but rather of a relative from Pennsylvania. Their mother, Margaret Caquelin
(variously spelled) named them in her will. She married a Zimmerman first
and then a Caquelin. Samuel moved to Kentucky and a number of Joseph's
descendants moved to Tennessee. Others remained in North Carolina. Bob and
I have been unable to get a descendant of Joseph or Samuel to have their DNA
tested to prove once and for all that they belong to Group 5.
I am hopeful that this contact may motivate a member of the family to do so.

Is Joseph C-13138 a half sibling of Sarah Salome Carpenter-112683 who married a David Klein (Cline) and who is buried in the same cemetery? SSC-112683 has Jacob Zimmerman-112652 and Catherine Ramsaur-112653 as parents. Suspicion of a earlier marriage of JZ-112652 to Margaret _______ is unfounded.PARENT:
Their mother (of brothers Joseph & Samuel), Margaret Caquelin (variously spelled) named them in her

Subject: Re: Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - 386630 lineage update - Group 5 unattached
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
At long last the lineage is settled. The first person in North Carolina to suggest that Joseph and Samuel, brothers who married Eaker sisters, were not English as some had supposed was Bonnie Mauney Summers. It was Lorena Eaker in her Eaker history, who located the German signature of Joseph and provided other proof to indicate that Joseph and Samuel were in fact Zimmermans. When I printed my book, Carpenters A Plenty, I stated as such and offered the proof that Lorena and I had located in our research. Yet, some simply refused "to believe" this lineage. I always say when one writes a book, an article, or creates a written account, that it will be believed forever!
It was clear to me that DNA would prove the lineage once and for all, and am thankful that Horace was motivated to be tested. Whoever encouraged him, I offer my thanks.
There is still some mystery with this family. We do not have the name of the father of Joseph, Samuel and Salome who married John Stucky/Stucki and resided in I think Ohio. All three siblings came to North Carolina and owned land in the Knob Creek area.
On Feb 21, 1798, "Margaret Gacklin" of Elizabeth Township, Lancaster County, PA wrote her will in which she devised to "my three children . . . Sons Joseph Zimmerman & Samuel Zimmerman and Daughter Salome Stucky". She also mentioned that son in law John Stucky was executor.
My Pennsylvania research indicates that Elizabeth (uncertain maiden name) married a Zimmerman and then married Dietrich (Didie) Caquelin (Gockley) around 1772. No trace of her first husband has been located. I believe that he must have been one of the passengers or son of a passenger of the pink Plaisance which arrived 1732. The Caquelin family resided in Alsace among the Zimmermans and other Swiss Amish, who had moved there. The surname is variously spelled, may have a French origin, but in the parish records I perused they appeared to speak German and attended German Protestant churches. Quite a number of the surname moved to America. Dietrich arrived in 1736 on the Princess Augusta with the Deppens, Ruchtis, and other Swiss who had lived in Alsace. I say all of this for the benefit of our Zimmerman research group.
Samuel moved to Barren County, Kentucky where he became quite prominent politically and economically. Some of his descendants traveled to central Missouri with so many other Carpenters and family members.
Bringing these families together in our Group 5 is a wonderful accomplishment. Thanks to everyone who assisted with this process!

Speculation - Is this a William of Owen Carpenter (b. abt 1 Jul 1765 NC - d. abt 1828 Lawrence, Mississippi)? or his father also named Owen? Group 24 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project? See:
https://carpentercousins.com/generallineage.htm#g24
On some Ancestry Family Trees, a Phillip Carpenter (b. abt 1762 VA/NC - d. 1830 NC) is given as the father. And others have a Zachary Carpenter who married a M. Rogers. See:

Children Jacob and David likely adopted formally or informally and assumed the Carpenter surname. They were most likely from the mother's first marriage.NOTE:
A descendant of son Henry Y-DNA tested and matched Group 5 detached. That line being this William, then Henry, Judson E., Oscar, John Mark then Benjamin Mark. DARLINGTON COUNTY RESPONSE TO DECLARATION OF WAR (1812)
By Brian Gandy - Director |July 13, 2018
https://dchcblog.net/2018/07/13/darlington-county-response-to-declaration-of-war/
On July 18, 1812, a group of Darlington County residents gathered to discuss the declaration of war. The following is a transcription of an article published in the City Gazette, September 11, 1812, found in the Darlington County Historical Commission’s Collection, which contains the results of that meeting.
Darlington Public Meeting
At a meeting of a respectable number of the citizens of Darlington District, at Darlington Court-House, on the 18th day of July, 1812, Col. LAMUEL BENTON[1], was called to the chair, and Col. WILLIAM ZIMMERMAN[2], was appointed Secretary.
Darlintonians Mentioned In Article
[2] Col. William Zimmerman was born in 1762. He married Mary Ann Dozier (died October 1, 1815) and had seven children. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, Representative from 1798-1800 (elected in 1800 but resigned); Sherriff from 1800-1802; Ordinary; Justice of the Quorum; and Senator from 1808-1812. In 1811 he was a part of the group in Darlington District petitioning the General Assembly to provide a system of free schools in South Carolina. In 1812 he served as Secretary of the Darlington Citizens Committee. He died October 12, 1815 at his residence in Darlington.TITLE: Colonel
The honorable title prefix and style of "Colonel" is designated legally for various reasons by US governors in common law to citizens, employees, travelers and visitors within their states.[1] The origins of the titular colonelcy can be traced back to colonial and antebellum times when men of the landed gentry were given the title to commission companies or for financing the local militias without actual expectations of command. This practice can actually be traced back to the English Renaissance when a colonelcy was purchased by a lord or prominent gentleman but the actual command would fall to a lieutenant colonel, who would deputize its members for the proprietor.[2]
The authority and distinction of the title of Colonel dates back to 1651 with the Virginia Company. Literally a colonel was recognized during colonial times as a head of the colony, everyone else was a colonist or colonial. There were colonels of expedition companies, land companies, trading companies, county militias, farm communities, plantations and frontier forts. The only person above the colonial colonel was the Governor, this begins changing once the colonels during the Revolutionary War select and become the first US state governors, senators and congressmen under democratic principles.[1]

Excerpts from the "History of the Old Cheraws" (South Carolina) by the Right Reverend Alexander Gregg, formerly Rector of St. David's Church, Cheraw, SC, extending from 1730 to 1810. Page 169: Tuesday, October 4, 1768. The Poll for the election of a Member of the Assembly for the Parish of St. David, in Craven County, South Carolina, was opened at the house of Mr. MacIntosh, and the following persons voted, Viz: (113 names listed, including James Dozier), Claudius Pegues, Esq., was unanimously elected a Member of the Assembly. Page 172: New writs of election were sent up to the churchwardens, Feb 25, 1769, and the election ordered for the 7th and 8th of March, at the same places as in the former year. (Included were the following, who did not vote in 1768: Arthur Hart and John Perkins). Page 197 Arthur Hart and John Perkins were listed as having served on the Grand Jury in 1773. Page 225 South Carolina, Jan. 9, 1775. “It is ordered by his Honor, the Lieutenant-Governor, in Council, that the names of the Magistrates for the several districts in this Province be printed in the several Gazittes. The names of the Magistrates for Cheraw District, as published, were these, viz: William Arthur, Thomas Wade, James Lindlay, Henry Patrick, Claudius Pegues, Charles Augustus Steward, Thomas Turner, John Perkins, Arthur Hart, Alexander MacIntosh, Philip Pledger, and William Henry Harrington.” In this list of his Majesty’s Justices for Cheraws are found the names of some who had already become conspicuous from their opposition to the Crown. Page 458: In the Memorable canvass of 1798, in Darlington, for the Legislature, a name appeared which has been destined to become distinguished in South Carolina. Samuel Wilds was one of four candidates. His competitors were Andrew Hunter, of Revolutionary note, Ezekiel Du Bose, just of age, and William Zimmerman. Mr. Wilds was then in his 23rd year, etc. Mr. Zimmerman was already a public man of prominent position, and young Du Bose, in addition to attractive personal traits, had the advantage of a very extensive family connection in his favor. He led the ticket followed by Mr. Zimmerman. Page 460: The term count was now laid aside, and that of district took its place, which has since been retained. Alexander MacIntosh was elected sheriff of Darlington. The Commissioners appointed for building and repairing the several Court Houses and gaols [British variant for jail] were: For Darlington, Robert Ellison, William Zimmerman, Andrew Hunter. Page 461: The dividing line between Cherterfield and Darlington had not, up this time, been run out. An act was accordingly passed at this session, appointing Alexander Craig, William Falconer, and Erasmus Powe, Commissioners on the part of Chesterfield; and Robert Ellison, Williamson, and D. R. Williams of Darlington, to establish said line. On the 11th of April 1800, a very considerable shock of an earthquake was felt by many of the inhabitants on Peedee. In the canvass of 1800 for the Legislature, another exciting contest took place in Darlington. Samuel Wilds, having been since at the Bar, was becoming more widely known, and being superior as a speaker to all his competitors, was elected without difficulty. William Zimmerman retained his seat. In the canvass of 1802, which was warmly contested, Alexander MacIntosh was returned for the Senate, in place of William Thomas, of Marlborough. William Zimmerman was elected Sheriff in place of Alexander MacIntosh, now in the Senate. Excerpts from the Addenda to Gregg’s History of the Old Cheraws; Perkinds-Zimmerman-Keith: Page 624: Extracts from a letter of Miss Elizabeth Zimmerman to the Secretary of the Pee Dee Historical Society: John Perkins, a native of Kershaw. Margaret Perkins, daughter of John Perkins, married first, James Dozier, of Georgetown. There were two children of this marriage: Mary Dozier, who married William F. Zimmerman, and James Dozier, who died in infancy. Mary Dozier Zimmerman had a large family: James Dozier, William F., John Perkins, Daniel, Eliza (Mrs. T. J. Flinn), Sarah (Mrs. W. R. Davis, and Malvina (who died in infancy). Margaret [Perkins] Dozier, married the second time, Colonel Keith of Georgetown, and had two daughters, Lydia Keith and Harriet Keith. Lydia Keith married Timothy Dargan and had quite a large family: G. Washington, Jeremiah, Timothy, John, Julius, Edwin, Sidney, Theodore, Charles, and Mrs. Furman (Henrietta), and Mrs. Sims (Margaret). Harriet Keith married Mr. Samuel Ervin, of Darlington, and moved to Georgia. They had one child, Harriet, who married a Mr. Burch. Mr. and Mrs. Burch had one child, Rosalie. Mrs. Burch died in Darlington at her aunt’s, Mrs. Lydia Dargan. The tragic fate of Col Keith should be remembered. He was killed by his body-servant on his way from Georgetown to his home in Darlington. This occurred not far from the place were Mr. Mat Muldrow afterward lived. The murdered was burned near the spot where the deed was committed.
