30. Hans Zimmerman Sr.

He was married to Barbara Gilgan. He was an Anabaptist at Alsace in1703.

Hans and Barbara were married on 12 January 1663 in Bern Switzerland.Ref Indexing Project (Batch) Number M00442-8, System OriginSwitzerland - EASy, Source Film Number: 2005964.  LDS Website.

Larry Zimmerman comments:
My notes show that a Peter Zimmerman was born at Steffisburg, 23 August 1668, to Hans Zimmerman and Barbara Gilgen who had been married on 12 January 1663, and I have images of both those records (image 94/564, LDS Film 2005787 for Peter’s birth and image 70/571, LDS Film 2005964 for the marriage of his parents). I have not found anything further on Peter in the Steffisburg Kirchenbuch, although I certainly may have missed a pertinent entry. Does anyone have a marriage record for this Peter or information about his children?

Barbara Gilgen

Barbara Gilgan (Barbi Gilgen) is shown in the Switzerland Baptisms,1491 - 1940 for Peter Zimmerman at the Familysearch.org website tohave been born in Guggisberg, Bern, Se3itzerland. Indexing Project(Batch) NUmber C00419-6 System Origin Switzerland-EASy Source FilmNumber 2005787

113. Anna Zimmerman

She moved out of Steffisburg on 6 May 1695 with Christian Zimmerman ofReutschlibrun, Steffisburg. She was living at Markirch, Alsace in 1708with the Amish.

114. Anthoni Zimmerman

He was not living at Steffisburg as an adult. He may be thegrandfather of the Anthony Zimmerman (b. c1738) who died at CocalicoTownship, Lancaster County in 1790. Anthorny first appeared in theCocalico tax records in 1786.

31. Christen Zimmermann

NOTE:
Probable son, mother unknown.

116. Niclaus Zimmermann

Probable son.

120. Hans Zimmermann

Larry Zimmerman comments.
Which brings us back to Hans Zimmermann (ZM522), the sixth sibling who we know attained
adulthood.
I discussed Hans in the October 2020 MFH article, focusing on a January 1694 entry in the CM.
The entry recounted a run-in with Hans Jacob Freudenreich, the Steffisburg minister, which led
to Hans being called ganz wiederspenstig. I wrote:
Hans Zimmermann, the wiederspenstig (obstinate) son of Hans Zimmermann in
der Weid and Lucia Wertmüller, may have been the person of that name who
married Cathrin Spring in 1698; I believe the preponderance of evidence supports
that view. That couple had five children baptized at Steffisburg between 1700 and
1708. The two youngest, Hans (b. 1705) and Peter (b. 1708), may have been the
Hans Zimmerman and Peter Zimmerman who immigrated to Pennsylvania in
1732 and 1739 respectively.
The time has come to rethink that view.
I have often wondered why Hans Zimmermann did not join his brothers and sisters as they each
left Steffisburg in the 1690s. If Hans was the headstrong Anabaptist depicted by pastor
Freudenreich in the Chorgerichtsmanual, why would he and Cathrin Spring stay behind to
faithfully present five children for baptism in the Swiss Reformed Church from 1700 through
1708? The additional evidence gathered in recent months, showing that all five other members of
his family left Bern, renews the question. Perhaps Hans was the holdout, content to stay put in
Steffisburg, but that does not comport with his Anabaptist radicalization. Although unstated by
Freudenreich in the CM, I assume Hans Zimmermann adhered to Jacob Ammann’s views on
doctrine. All the more reason to join the Amman group at Ste. Marie-aux-Mines. The case has
not been proved, but I suspect he left Bern ca. 1693-95.

121. Anni Zimmermann

Larry Zimmerman comments.
Jumping to Anni Zimmermann (ZM523), I wrote about her in the October 2020 MFH article
on Hans in der Weid and in the update published in the July 2021 MFH. We know the unmarried
Anni, she “a well-known Wiedertäuferin,” left Steffisburg in 1695 (with her first cousin once
removed, Christen Zimmermann). It is likely she (and cousin Christen) joined the Amish group
at Ste. Marie. She may have been the Anna Zimmermann named on the 1708 list.

122. Madeleine "Madle" Zimmermann

Larry Zimmerman comments.
Madle Zimmermann (ZM524). In footnote #34 to the October 2020 article, I wrote that two of
Hans in der Weid’s daughters, Madle and Babi “are not documented after their baptisms, so it
may be that neither survived childhood.” I was wrong about Madle, having overlooked a
reference by Robert Baecher and notes in my own database regarding a 1687 marriage and the
baptism of three children. Madle Zimmermann probably married Ulrich Stauffer on 14 October
1687. Baecher wrote:
Having come from Steffisburg and having arrived in Ste. Marie-aux-Mines in
1693, Ulrich Stauffer is very likely the man who married Madeleine Zimmermann
[on 14 October 1687]. He too had the right to live and work in Steffisburg, being
a native of Eggiwil. He settled in a place called Reutschibrunnen near Homberg.
(Baecher, 2004, Part II, p. 76)
Baecher listed the children of Ulrich Stauffer and Madeleine Zimmermann baptized at
Steffisburg between March 1689 and January 1693. As Baecher wrote, “Subsequently, these
individuals disappear from documentation at Steffisburg.
Here are the children with baptism dates, as I have verified them in the Steffisburg Taufrodel:
1. Christen, 17 March 1689, witnesses: Michel Reüser, Christen Schneitter, Anna Megerdt. Uli
Stauffer from Eggiwÿl, living at Reutschibrunnen.
2. Ulrich, 28 Dec 1690, witnesses: Ulrich Blum, Hans Wÿler, Anna Zimmermann. Ulrich
Stauffer from Eggiwÿl.
3. Hans, 29 Jan 1693, witnesses: Michel Opliger, Christen Müller, Anna Herman. Ulrich Stauffer
from Eggiwÿl, living at Reutschibrunnen.
Those who have read my October 2020 and July 2021 MFH articles will spot a familiar place
name in the three baptismal entries, a name repeated by Baecher. Reutschibrunnen was the farm
from where Anni Zimmermann and her cousin Christen departed for Alsace. I discussed that
property-less than a mile from In der Weid-in the October 2020 and July 2021 MFH articles
and speculated how Anni Zimmermann came to live there.
The facts about Ulrich Stauffer and Madle Zimmermann strengthen my hypothesis. Ulrich
Stauffer came to live and work at Reutschibrunnen sometime before 1687, where he found Anni
Zimmermann living and working-I suggested she probably came to Reutschibrunnen around
1678 at age 17 to help care for children of Hans Zimmermann and Anna Neuenschwander as
well as her aging great-uncle Hans Zimmermann-see page 157 in the July 2021 article. Perhaps
through his acquaintance with Anni, Ulrich Stauffer met her younger sister Madle who may still
have been living a mile distant at In der Weid, although she too may have joined the domestic
staff at Reutschibrunnen. However it transpired, Ulrich Stauffer and Madle Zimmermann
married in 1687 and had their first child 18 months later. Anna Zimmermann who served as a
god-mother for baby Ulrich’s baptism in December 1690 was the mother’s sister.

124. Babi Zimmermann

Larry Zimmerman comments.
Babi Zimmermann (ZM526). I may have been half-right in my claim about no documentation
for Madle and Babi after their birth. I have found nothing regarding Babi, so she may have died
young. It would be remarkable if all seven children born to Hans in der Weid and Lucia
Wertmüller had survived childhood-even six out of seven was noteworthy in a time of high
child mortality.
If Babi died young, that would mean that at least five of the six children of Hans in der Weid
who reached adulthood left Steffisburg during the Amish exodus to Alsace.

Their children's descendants mostly reside in Tennessee.

51. Peter Carpenter

In 1810 he removed from North Carolina to Tennessee in a county
that was then called Bedford, now Marshall.  He entered from the
Government and the brothers purchased together 240 acres of land
and called his homestead "Carpenter Hill";  named from a high
hill on the place which still retains the name of Carpenter Hill
and is one of the most prominent landmarks in that section of
the state.  The Ramseys were among the pioneers of Tennessee.
Margaret Ramsey was a cousin to James K. Polk and was born on an
adjoining plantation to that of the Polks on Duck River.  Peter
was at one time a large land owner and also owned many slaves.
In his old age he made his home with his son Samuel.  He was a
warm hearted and sympathetic man and generous to a fault.  He
was buried at Bloomfield, Iowa.2  SOUR S203
