Daniel M Carpenter
------------
Laban Alexander (Alex) Carpenter was the son of John Jessie and Catherine "Cottie" Carpenter.  He was born in Catawba County North Carolina, and in 1858 moved with his parents and siblings to Haywood County, where they settled on Sheepback Mountain, near current Maggie Valley.   Apart from his military service, he lived and worked the remainder of his life in this area.  He was married to Mary Melvania "Viney" Curtis Carpenter, and they had nine children, including sons John and Dan Carpenter.
Alex enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 31, 1961, and served for the full four years of the Civil War in Company C of the 25th North Carolina Regiment.  His regiment saw action at Antietam, Petersburg, and played an important role in the Battle of Fredericksburg.  He was captured and held prisoner at the war's end in occupied Richmond, Virginia on April 3, 1865.  His service rifle from the war is on public display at the Shelton House Museum in Waynesville, NC.
After the war he was a successful rock mason, and with his father expanded the Carpenter homestead on 800 acres of land at Sutton Fields, Sheepback Mountain.  The homestead became a widely recognized landmark of the Smoky Mountains before it left family ownership and was demolished in the 1980s.  Alex lived his final years with his grandson Johnny Carpenter, surrounded by a large family.  He and Viney are buried in a private cemetery in Maggie.  His parents John and Cottie are buried in adjacent unmarked graves.
