Robert C. Carpenter, author of Carpenters Aplenty, writes regarding this in Jan 2018:
"Let me clear up the Martin family listed on page 689 of my book I discuss the Burton Craig Carpenter family, John Michael Martin. I stated that he changed his name when he moved to Alabama. I failed to state why he did so. This family was involved in distilling after the Civil War. He failed to pay federal taxes on the alcohol produced. He therefore decided to leave the area, as relatives told me in the dark of the night only occasionally to return also at night, to start a new life in Alabama. He changed his name to avoid prosecution. So there is no genetic connection with the Martin family as I have been able to determine. He was genetically a Carpenter."
