DEATH:
Both Ralph and Clara were killed in an auto accident on 1 Jan 1966. The accident took place in dense fog where two vehicles collided head on on US Highway 75 (73) about six miles south of Nebraska City per the newspaper article Kraig provided.
See:  RIN 154285 Ralph Carpenter Death.pdf
Kraig adds the following.
Ralph and Clara never had any children, so my father, the eldest child, was sent home from Vietnam to attend to the estate.
Turned out, my grand father didn’t have a will but Clara did. Since she outlived him, her side of the family got all the assets.
She was nice, and I’m sure she thought she would die and old widow woman, years after Ralph would have passed away.
Ralph worked building Federal and State highways, thus, he was gone a lot.
My father feels his Uncle Beason was his second father; plus the Beason’s were tight and “very family.” They accepted the
children as their own until they returned to Ralph’s later. I was raised being around the Beason’s more than the Carpenter’s.
After my father retired out of the USAF in 1968, we moved to San Mateo, near his cousin “Aunt” Patsy Beason. We visited them a lot.
One summers afternoon, my cousin Johnny and I ,ages 14 & 13 (?), buried a half stick of dynamite in the backyard and lit it off. It made a big hole in the yard and neighbors called the police to the door within minutes!
Well, “Aunt Patsy” as older and more savvy so she answered the door.
The policeman said “There’s a report of a large explosion from this area” at which my Aunt says “I don’t know anything about it officer, but I assure you, it will never happen again” at which the policeman ,some how assured, and knowing he had the culprits said “I’ll take you word for it” and then left. I was shocked, but Aunt Pasty always knew what to say. Of course we both got in hot water for it.
Sincerely, Kraig Carpenter
