Bio: A memorial service for Vernice Carpenter will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 10, at North Grand Church of Christ in Ames with Pastor Jim Gilmore officiating. Vernice Merle Carpenter was born Oct. 13, 1918, at the family home south of Coon Rapids, the youngest son of Curtis and Charity Maude Carpenter. He graduated from Viola Township School in 1936, and he continued to attend many alumni gatherings. He was raised and worked on what later would be designated as a century farm (i.e., a farm owned by the same family for more than 100 years), also near Coon Rapids. He married Zelpha Nadine Morlan June 21, 1952, and fathered three children - Myron Clyde (1954), Colleen Charity (1956) and Marc Curtis (1963). During his life, he was a farmer, sheep shearer, owned and operated a meat locker, truck driver, police officer, volunteer fireman and, for the better part of his life, pursued his passion for construction, carpentry and woodworking. His home was always filled with the projects he built. He assisted in the construction of North Grand Christian Church and CY Stephens Auditorium, both located in Ames. He also worked for ISU in the Maintenance Department just prior to his retirement. His life passions were family, church, camping, fishing, hunting and building things with his hands. On Tuesday, Feb. 28, he succumbed to multiple health issues and died at Retama Hospice in McAllen, Texas, where he and his wife had wintered for many years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years; one sister, Ruby Jacobson of Seattle; three children and their spouses, Myron and Cindy Carpenter of Boone, Colleen and Dana Sward of Waukee and Marc and Char Carpenter of Klamath Falls, Ore.; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Tyler, Jon, Mycah, Daniel, Christina, Marckus, Eleonore and Shania; and two great-grandchildren, Austin and Tanner. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orval and George and their wives; one baby brother, Virgil; and one brother-in-law, Eddie Jacobson. He lived an extremely full life with love, laughter, and church and will be missed and celebrated by a very grateful family. Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
