Mr. Fred Raeford Carpenter, 85 of 115 Bates Ave., Cherryville passed away August 28, 2007 at home.
Born April 27, 1922 in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Clayton H. Carpenter and Sarah Leila Lankford Carpenter. He was retired from the payroll department for Carolina Freight Carriers Corporation after 32 years and also worked with Carpenter's Funeral Home of Cherryville for many years. Mr. Carpenter was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cherryville where he was a member and secretary of the Men's Bible Class. He was also a member of the Cherryville Masonic Lodge # 505, 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Charlotte, Oasis Shrine Temple, Charlotte, Cherryville Shrine Club, Cherryville American Legion Post 100, and the VFW Post 5200.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a six brothers, Hubert, Everette, Lloyd, Colon, Max and Troy Carpenter; two foster brothers, L.C. Ford and Lander Carpenter; and two sisters, Ruby C. Shumate and Connie Watterson.
Mr. Carpenter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Geraldine Baxter Carpenter; two daughters and sons-in-law, Frieda C. Clawson and Steve of Rocky Mount and Kathy C. Burleson and Brent of Cherryville; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold K. Carpenter and Evelyn of Cherryville; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gerald Baxter and Dot of Cherryville; and five grandchildren, Josh and Casey Clawson and Anna, Abby and Gavin Burleson.
A funeral service will be 3:00 PM, August 31, 2007 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Fite and Dr. Bill Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Bess Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:45 to 2:45 PM, Friday August 31, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church in Cherryville and at other times the family will be at the home.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 601 N. Pink Street, Cherryville, NC 28021 or to the Shriners Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

- Mrs. Carpenter retired from Gaston County Schools as a secretary. She was owner of Carpenter's Gifts and Carpenter's Tours. Mrs. Carpenter also worked for Dr. Craig Jones as a nurse. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the June Medlin Sunday school class.
- In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Raeford Carpenter.
- Mrs. Carpenter is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Frieda C. Clawson and Steve of Rocky Mount and Kathy C. Burleson and Brent of Cherryville; a brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Dot Baxter of Cherryville; and five grandchildren, Josh Clawson, Casey Pate, Anna, Abby and Gavin Burleson.

Harold "Fungo" Carpenter, 85, of 117 South Pink St. died Thursday April 23, 2009. He was born March 24, 1924 in Cherryville a son of the late Clayton H. and Sarah Leila Lankford Carpenter.
Harold was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he served as sexton for 33 years. He was retired from Carolina Freight Carriers after 30 years of service, former member of Cherryville Fire Dept from 1954-1979. Fungo was a member of Masonic Lodge 505 AF &AM, and was recognized for 56 years of faithful service to Cherryville High School Football for being down marker of the chain gang.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Hubert, Everette, Lloyd, Troy, Colon, Fred, and Max Carpenter, Sisters Connie Watterson and Ruby Shumate and foster brothers Lander Carpenter and L.C. Ford.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Evelyn Hallman Carpenter, daughter and son-in-law Debra and Robert Hord, son and daughter-in-law Kermit and Julie Carpenter all of Cherryville, and two grandchildren Lesley Mills of Charlotte and Kyle Carpenter of Cherryville.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at St. John‘ s Lutheran Church at 3 PM with Rev. Dr. Robert Allen, Rev. Harold Skinner and Rev. Mike Collins officiating with burial to follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday at Carpenter's Funeral Home from 1:30-2:30 PM and at other times a the home.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, PO Box 100, Cherryville, NC 28021.
