Hi John, I thought that I had already sent the following info regarding your previous email. However, when checking my email sent it was apparent that I had not. This is an additional input on Samuel as being the son of Henry or Christopher Carpenter, again from "CAP". Robert states on page 244, "I have been unable to locate a great deal of information about Henry and his descendants. In fact I do not have actual proof that the Henry Carpenter of Christian and Todd Counties, Ky., is identical to Henry, son of CZ. I do believe the weight of evidence is compelling." "One important source for Henry Carpenter is Census Analysis: 1790 Lincoln Co., NC Henry Carpenter 2-1-3, p-111 1800 Christian Co., Ky., Tax List 7-22-1800 - Henry Carpenter 1810 Christian Co., Ky., Census 1-3-1-0-1/2-1-1-9-1-2 slaves, p-612 1820 Todd Co., Ky., Census H. "The major problem in researching this family is the scarcity of data. My wife and I traveled through Christian & Todd Counties, Ky., a number of years ago." Also on p-49 of the 1840 Benton Co., census was Jacob Carpenter, whom I have assumed to be Henry's son. If it was Henry in Mo., his age was listed in the census incorrectly. Unfortunately, proof has not been found." Robert goes on to say, "Data concerning Henry Carpenter has come from my research, the research of Mrs. Esther Bigham of Vista, CA.; census records; and the research of Nona Caine of 611 N. Monroe, Versailles, Mo." In answer to your question, The Samuel (of Henry) married ________ (Who?). Any ideas? I believe if we consider Robert C. On July 18, 1799, Christian Zimmerman wrote his will in which he gave his home place of 380 acres to
"My youngest son Frederick Carpenter".
By 1821 he paid taxes for 1130 acres.

Christian's sons Frederick and Jacob belonged to Lutheran congregations.

John Carpenter Fred's son 1 White Poll
(The "Capt." meant that Frederick had been elected by the area's free white males as Captain of the
Militia. Ownership of 1130 acres during this period of time was very significant.)

Frederick Carpenter resided on the 380 acres he received from his father Christian Zimmerman in his
will.

Frederick Carpenter resided in present Gaston Co. along Beaverdam Creek.  Frederick Carpenter died
without writing a will which meant that his land would be divided among his heirs. During July
Sessions1830 the Lincoln Co. Court appointed Michl. Reinhardt, Robert Oates,Isaac White, & H.
Cansler to divide the land of Frederick Carpenter. This land division was filed on October 16, 1830 in the
lIncoln Co.Courthouse (Gaston Co. was formed from Lincoln Co. in 1846) Bk-34,p-92-97.

The commissioners determined that each heir should receive land valued at $221 which meant that
some heirs had to pay others to make up the differences of the land values.

The Estate Sale for Frederick Carpenter (State of North Carolina, Lincoln County) left a balance of
$3583.77 in the hands of the administrators. At his death Frederick's property included 12 slaves,7
horses or colts, about 22 cows and calves, hogs, sheep, and a significant amount of corn, hay, oats,
straw, and shucks. In addition to the obvious farming activities Frederick had a still, owned a great deal of
flax and leather, and apparently was involved in mining because of the abundance of iron and
ownership of gold scales.

Frederick Carpenter was a credit to his community. His neighbors selected him as their militia captain. He
served as a Lincoln Co. Justice of the peace and often assisted his neighbors with their legal needs. He
was also a leader in the Beaverdam Lutheran Church Congregation. In 1858 the congregation changed
its name to St. Marks Lutheran.

The Estate Sales and Settlement reveal that the final settlement of$3,583.77 is a significant sum. At his

"Mr. A. B. "Gus" Kiser, a descendant and researcher of Frederick Carpenter, referred to him as "Old
Feddy".  He called his wife "Jennie".  Her name has been confusing.  In the Estate Papers of her father
Joseph Kiser filed at the archives; she was called "Christena". The Estate Papers of Frederick Carpenter
referred to her as "Jane Carpenter", and in the 1850 Gaston Co. census her name was given as Jane. I
assume that her whole name was Christina Jane and that her nick name was Jennie."  CAP, pg. 247

My information comes from people who knew family members, death certificates, marriage, wills, newspapers, books.  I do not have any information about Ann Carpenter.  Two of Alfred Hoke's grandchildren ended up in Hawaii.  Have been to Jacksonville and researched Hokes and Crows.

         Hand written letter 24 April 1920 from George's cousin JH Moragne on Kauai telling George, Bessie, and children to come to Kauai now where he had a job for him. Joseph H Moragne and George were first cousins.  After Joseph Moragne's parents died he was raised by Alfred, Susan, and Augusta Hoke. Mary Ann Hoke Moragne and Sara Hoke Crow were sisters. Family hx and stories and censuses.

         Stories from cousins, news articles, deeds and myself visiting 3 houses she owned in Idaho and Washington and information from cemetery office.
          "We were shown this week a horse pistol of very ancient and quaint style. It was captured, along with a mate and a sword, from a British officer, at the battle of Brandywine, during the revolution, by a member of the HOKE family, and has come on down as an heirloom to the family of Wm. C. CROW, whose wife is a descendant of the captor. From the coat of arms on the stock it must have belonged to a Hessian officer.   source:  The Jacksonville Republican 19 Aug 1893"
           Sara's sister Augusta Hoke moved with her sister to Idaho from Alabama and lived with her until Sara died.  Augusta took care of Joseph H. Moragne when he lived with his grandparents in Alabama when he was young.
           Augusta reported on Sara Hoke Crow's Washington Death Certificate that Sara's father was Alfred A. Hoke of Alabama and Susan B. Abernathy of Alabama.

           North Carolina U.S, Marriage Records 1741-2011 Alfred Hoke application for license to marry Susan Abernathy 27 Sept 1837.
           1860 census shows Alfred and Susan with Mary Anna, Agustin (Augusta), and Sally (Sara) as siblings

Only have book histories on the rest.    Working on this I have to my embarrassment discovered how scattered and disordered some of my research has become.

There is a history A History of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, Jacksonville, Alabama, 1844-1994 written by Ronald J. Caldwell, Professor of History, Jacksonville State University.  I read it in Anniston 3 years ago.   It is all about the Hokes, Abernathys, and Forney families and their history from NC to Jacksonville, Alabama.
            p  9  " Soon after his arrival in Lincolnton, probably in 1799, Daniel Hoke married Barbara Ramsour.  She was born on February 5, 1780, the daughter of Jacob Ramsour (died January 11, 1826) and Anne Carpenter Ramsour.
           P 12 talked about Daniel and Barbara Hoke's children,   "The fifth child was named Alfred, born on July 4, 1810.  He became a farmer in Lincoln County.  When most of the Hokes moved to Alabama in 1835, he remained behind for two years.  On Sept 27, 1837, he married in Lincoln County Susan M. Abernathy, a sister of Miles W. Abernathy"……

          Anniston Star Newspaper, June 16, 1963, Anniston, Alabama (Ancestry) a paragraph in article Edwards Farm Holds Treasure of Memories…….."Going even farther, one ancestor was Daniel Hoke of York, Pa., who was a captain under General Jackson in the War of 1812.  His wife, Barbara Ramsaur Hoke, gave the family a connection with a Confederate General Dodson Ramseur"

Sabina Hoke, whose husband, John Hoke, died in Lancaster County, Penn., came to Lincoln County with her children about 1797 or 1798.  She died in Lincolnton, August 9, 1826.  Their children were……………………….2.
