NOTE:
Robert C. Carpenter, author of Carpenters Aplenty, writes in Jan 2018:
Anna Carpenter was most likely the daughter of "Cumberland" John Carpenter and Mary Carpenter (her maiden name). "Cumberland" John has been an evasive genealogical fellow! He was in Tennessee and then back in North Carolina. He then left North Carolina and in my book I suggest that he returned to Tennessee, Bedford or Marshall County. See pages 37-38 of my book. I surmise through weight of the evidence that Anna was a daughter since she fits nowhere else, since she had connections with proven children of "Cumberland" John, and because of her moving to Tennessee. Now if Daniel was a brother of Anna, he would have the same genetic makeup of Martin. In other words, if Daniel was a son of "Cumberland" John, which I thought possible when I did my original research, his DNA (Lance's) should match mine. Unfortunately it does not.
NOTE:
Robert C. Carpenter, author of Carpenters Aplenty, writes in Jan 2018:
"On page 477-478 of my book I detail Martin Carpenter. He left North Carolina after marrying Anna Carpenter. Martin was the son of Jonas Carpenter, of Jacob Zimmerman, the family from Steffisburg Switzerland. Jacob's homeplace has been located and an archaeological dig has uncovered some outstanding artifacts proving the age of the site. Apparently Martin had no children as none appear in the census after he moved to Tennessee. I suggest that he may have adopted Caroline, who was born 1837 in North Carolina. That connection remains unclear. I have never looked at and am not aware of the will or estate papers in Tennessee of Martin to clear up any family he may have had. The estate papers of Jonas Carpenter proves that Martin was a son, pages 476-477 in my book. So if Daniel was a son or brother of Martin, he would have Group 5's DNA. It may have been that Martin and Anna took an interest in Daniel and Tilda to the point of welcoming them into their home and may have provided property to them upon their death (I do not know). The fact that Daniel had the surname of Carpenter complicates things and makes it appear that they were related. While there may have been an adoption, there appears to be no genetic relationship."CENSUS: 1820 US Census
