Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2017
This is a record of my ancestors on my father's side (Carpenter) from the late 1700s to 1982. Carpenter's, formerly Zimmerman, came from Germany and Switzerland and settled in PA and NC after receiving grants from English Kings George II an iII. The married into the Kiser clan in the area of Gaston and Lincoln Counties in NC. There are a few missing pieces but all things considered, this is an excellent history of our family & the Kiser family with generation by generation of lineage. Only a limited number of copies were printed as I bought copies for all of my children and was surprised to find a copy still floating around. If you are a Carpenter or a Kiser and can trace your roots back to this area of NC, this will save you hundreds of hours of research. I little pricey, but considering the rarity, ????

Subject: Re: Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - 284687 lineage question & update
Hi John R. et al, I returned to my home on Tuesday, 7 Jan., and have been looking over one email in particular, with regards to John Jackson Carpenter. I'm extracting what Robert C. Carpenter wrote in his book, Carpenters A Plenty, page 505: "P124 John Jackson or Jackson J. Carpenter, b-abt. 1821, Ky., alive in 1850 Morgan Co., m-Apr. 13, 1840 (Cooper Co. M.) Lucinda McFarland, b. abt. 1817 Mo., alive 1850 Morgan Co. He was probably the John G. Carpenter listed on p-180 Morgan Co. 1840 census with 1 male - 15-20; 1 female - 20-30. Nona Caine located this family 1850 Morgan Co., House #323. We have not been able to locate them in later censuses, nor have we been able to discover what became of them. Ch. [Note the word probably.] [P124 indicates his descent from Peter Zimmerman, b. abt. 1736] P1241 John Carpenter, b. abt. 1841 Mo. P1242 Nancy Jane Carpenter, b. abt. 1843 Mo." Another entry by Robert on page 1051 for the Harrelson Family reads: "13. Dicie Lodena Harrelson (Mar. 23, 1848 - Nov. 19. 1914), m. John Jackson Carpenter (c), she bur. St. Paul, see C74(12)." No date for this marriage was given. The reference back to C74(12), page 169 reads: "C74(12) John Jackson Carpenter, b. Nov. 27, 1853, d. after 1914, m. (1) Dec. 11, 1877 (G.C.M.L.) Dicy Lodena Harrelson, b. Mar. 23, 1848, d. Nov. 19, 1914 (G.C.D.C.), bur. St. Pauls Meth. Ch. Cem., dau. William & Nancy Telitha Cuemimoody (Stroups) Harrelson (c) ; (2) Anne Neal. I did locate some records on 1st wife Dicy Harrelson Carpenter. On Nov. 17, 1914, Dicy L. Carpenter wrote her will which is filed at the State archives under Gaston Co. She gave to her "dear beloved husband John J. Carpenter" the land "conveyed to me by my father William Harrelson." " [G.C.M.L. = Gaston County Marriage License] [G.C.D.C. = Gaston County Death Certificate] John here Robert C. is talking about two different John Jackson Carpenter's, one born in 1821 and one born in 1853. With that understanding, the John Jackson Carpenter who was born in 1821(1817) did in fact marry Lucinda McFarland on 13 April 1840. It's entirely possible that he could have married Dicy Lodena Harrelson later. John I see a potential problem here with the two different John J. Carpenters. In addition, one is thought to be a John G. Carpenter during the 1840 census. My thoughts are that the John Jackson Carpenter, b. abt. 1821 as mentioned by Robert C. on page 505 is the same John Jackson Carpenter mentioned by Dennis Owen as being b. 1817. DNA results between Darren Carpenter and myself along with others in CCG5 would seem to bear this out. Also, we both show this John Jackson Carpenter as being the father of James Bengman Carpenter. With regards to your question to Dennis, "Do you have the name of John Jackson Carpenters previous spouse?" As you saw in my GEDCOM, I show John Jackson Carpenter's other (second) wife as Rachel Miller Fry, b. Sep 1816, Ky., as the mother of James Bengman Carpenter. Dennis Owen also shows this relationship on his Ancestry.com page , he also shows her birth as 26 Sep 1816, KY and death as 9 Sep 1909. MO. According to my FTM2014 John Jackson Carpenter would be my 3C3R, Darren Carpenter my 6C4R and Dennis Owen my 6C3R. Happy New Year to ALL. Bob Carpenter

E-MAIL2:
Who is your John Carpenter? In the 1840 US Census of Morgan County, MO – We have three. Two in Richland (John & John G.) and one in Willow Fork (Jonithan). See the following link.

In 1850, your John Carpenter is in Richland, so I assume he is John or John G. in 1840. But ... being born in 1817 puts him in the 30<40 age in 1840.
On the 1840 image (on the same census page), I see a ...
Moses Carpenter with a male in the 20<30 age and the 60<70 age and a female in the 15<20 age with a female in the 60<70 age. Then toward the bottom of the page we have ...
John Carpenter (50<60 age with 4 younger males children – 3 younger females, a female 20<30, a female 40<50), ...
Thomas Carpenter (20<30 age), ...
John G. Carpenter (15<20 age) and ...
Christian Carpenter (20<30 age). A lot of Carpenters but no Johns in the 30<40 range.
NOTE: This is consistent with the John Carpenter (b. 1790 Lincoln County, NC) father of Christian (b. abt 1814), John Jackson (sic John G. b. 1821) and Thomas (b. 1817). The Moses is unknown but likely related.
The Jonathan (looks like Jonathan and not Jonitahn to me on the census image) in Willow Fork Township is in the 30<40 age. He has 2 females 0<5 and 1 female 20<30. For age purposes, this fits your John Carpenter. If it was 1 female and 1 male child under age 5 this would match the 1850 US Census in ages of your John Carpenter. No other Carpenters seen on the census page, nor adjoining pages. This is the closest match found in MO for your John Carpenter.
In the 1830 US Census, I see a John (40<50 & 50<60) & Jonathan (40<50) in Cooper & Clay Counties, MO respectively. It is unlikely your John Carpenter was Head of House in 1830, but you need to check.
One major item. In the 1900 US Census, your John Carpenter indicated on the Census that his father was born in NC. His birth state is consistent with KY. The NC to KY to MO is consistent with Group 5. The Y-DNA will be telling!
