Birth: Feb. 18, 1840
Blount County
Tennessee, USA
Death: Sep. 5, 1881
Izard County
Arkansas, USA
Margaret Malinda was born in Blount County, Tennessee, moving with her family to Murray County, Georgia around 1849. She was the oldest of the 12 surviving children of Lawson Carpenter and Sarah Costner. She married John Brakebill August 11, 1861 in Murray County, Georgia. Having been widowed, possibly by the Civil War, she then married John M Patterson, September 17, 1865, also in Murray County, Georgia. They had a son Robert C, born in 1867 in Georgia and a son Rufus Lee in 1872 in Arkansas. Malinda was once again widowed and married a third time to David J Green. They were the parents of a son George Lawson and a daughter Sarah M and in 1880 were living in Izard County, Arkansas with other members of her family. Margaret died in September 5, 1881 leaving a husband, a teenage son and three small children.
Margaret Malinda is the sister of my great grandfather John Lee Carpenter.

Robert Clinton Patterson
Birth:  Jul. 2, 1867
Murray County
Georgia, USA
Death:  Dec. 10, 1942
Robert Clinton Patterson was the son of John M Patterson and Margaret Malinda Carpenter. Research seems to indicate that his father died by the time he was 5 years old. His parents were married in Chatsworth, Murray County, Georgia on September 17, 1865. He is 3 years old on the 1870 census with his mother, who was living with her sister Rachel Caroline Carpenter and her husband William Hembree. The early records do not indicate if Margaret is still married to John, or if she is a widow. No death records have been found for John, either in Georgia or Arkansas, where Margaret moved with her parents and other members of her family, to join two of her siblings that had moved to Independence County, Arkansas just prior to when the 1870 census was enumerated. Margaret is married, according to the 1880 census, living in Arkansas with David Green. Four children are listed as their children, namely Robert Clinton, whom we know to be a Patterson, Rufus L, George Lawson and Sarah M. Later research indicates that not only Robert Clinton was mistakenly written as a Green, but indications are that Rufus L was mistakenly written as a Green also. In later research we find Rufus Lee Patterson, whom would appear to be the full brother of Robert Clinton, and was a contact for the family research. Lee was born in Arkansas in 1872, as was the two children George Lawson and Sarah M "Sallie" Green.
Robert married Mary Lucinda "Lou" Foster in about 1888. They were parents of 11 children.

Thomas Jackson Carpenter
Birth:  Dec. 16, 1845
Blount County
Tennessee, USA
Death:  Nov. 11, 1924
Pope County
Arkansas, USA
Thomas Jackson was born in Blount County, Tennessee, moving to Murray County, Georgia as an early age with his family. There he met and married Sarah E White. They had 9 children, 6 of whom survived to become adults.
In late 1869 to early 1870, Thomas and Sarah, along with his sister and brother-in-law, Samuel Z and Mary Ann Carpenter Dover, removed from Georgia to Independence County, Arkansas. By 1875 he was living in Conway County, where he remained for over two decades at Lick Mountain. After Sarah died Thomas married a widow in about 1893, Lula McLain, who had a young daughter Cora Essie. Thomas and Lula had two children, Annie D and Augustus Earl. In 1906 Thomas married Viola Herrin Turner Arnett, but by on 1910 census, it stated him to be a widow, however Viola Carpenter was found two pages over on page 10 with some of her children and was also listed as a widow. The information on the census stated for both Thomas and Viola that it each had been married 3 times and the number of years of the last was 3 years. It would seem that they parted company and simply declared themselves to be widow and widower. Viola is buried in Old Baptist Cemetery, Center Valley, Pope County, Arkansas beside her first husband Larkin G Turner.
By 1920 he was in Texas with his daughter Sophronia Caroline "Fronia" Palmer. At the time of his death in 1924, he was back in Pope County, Arkansas, near the small town of Dover.
There is a death record for Thomas Carpenter in the Arkansas records, for the year 1916. He is not this Thomas Jackson Carpenter. And then of course this stone gives the correct date of his death.
Thomas is the brother of my great grandfather John Lee Carpenter.
