Edmond Clinton "Ed" Carpenter
Birth: Dec. 2, 1837
Hustonville
Lincoln County
Kentucky, USA
Death: Oct. 30, 1916
Tennessee, USA
Edmond C. who went by "Ed", was born 2 Dec 1837,(KY) d 30 Oct 1916 of pneumonia at 78,(TN). He lived near or in New Middleton, Smith Co, TN. All of his marriages took place in TN & all of his children were born there. (some records say 1st wife Bettie's son, John M. was born in KY.) He was a farmer & raised fine livestock including horses. He loved horses & took a ride shortly before he died. Edmond was tall & rangy in build. In his 60s he had a beard, dark hair & blue eyes. He had a strong personality, was independent, shrewd, not overly religious & he raised his children with "patriarchal firmness." He was married x6 & had 22 children over 50 years, most of whom lived to adulthood. He said he had no intention of remaining single & as each wife died he needed someone to help with all the children. The last of his 2 wives were younger than his 3 oldest children.
Ed moved with his parents and family to TN by wagon and horseback to Sumner Co. in 1846, then to Smith Co. in 1847. Ed died in TN, and was buried on the Jones Farm near Hustonville in KY, next to his dtr Emma, (dau of Evaline) as arranged by his daughters Ollie and Louvilla (dtrs of Eliza.) Ed's parents had moved to Texas in about 1868; several of Ed's children moved to Texas, making many Texas descendants. (Ed's father died in 1875 and his mother moved back to TN, where she died 1893 at age 87.)

For some reason Willie told him not to & threatened to whip him if he did, but he disobeyed & brought the water anyway. She was about to whip him when Edmund appeared, they argued & he told her to leave, which she did. He didn't live long after that. He is buried on the Jones farm near Hustonville next to his dtr Emma, as arranged by dtrs Ollie & Louvilla, close to where he was born. The family cemetery, which had a historical marker placed by the DAR in 1969, is in a pasture about 2 mi West of Hustonville on Hwy 78 that looks out over the farmlands along Carpenter's Creek.

Both were researched through family interviews, letters, family Bibles, & public records. John Curry Haley Jr was a high school principal, (College High School, location unknown) b 1906, son of John M Carpenter's daughter Mamie (Mary Eugenia) & John Curry Haley Sr. He also used newspapers, a family book on the Carpenter Genealogy, & books on local history. Callie Carpenter was the daughter of Eliza Hubbard, 2nd wife of her father, "Ed" Carpenter.
Eliza Hubbard was b. 17 Dec 1846 in VA, m.8 Apr. 1875, d. 23 Dec. 1882, TN.
Father "Ed" was born in TN.
Eliza and Ed lived near New Middleton, Smith CO. As a teen-ager Callie Carpenter went to live near, or with a brother in Lamar County, Texas, near Paris.
Callie, "Grandmother Lewis", was a loving and kind grandmother to her seven grandchildren. She was a hard-working woman, a gardener, and a great cook. At one time she ran a small store outside of her house in a small building which later was home to a woman she helped care for, named Mrs. Darden.
A fond memory was her love of her blue parakeet Bobby whom she taught to say each grandchilds' name, followed by, "is a sweet bird, i.e., "Millie is a sweet bird". Bobby flew out of the house one day, and a lady returned him home after Bobby told the lady his address, "409 S.E. 19th St., Paris, Texas."

Jesse Boyd "Jess" Lewis
Birth: Mar. 6, 1883
Death: Oct. 18, 1971
From an unnamed and undated article located in the Lamar County Genealogical Society Library, in the Taylor Collection, Box L. 'Jesse Boyd Lewis, 88, a retired farmer, whose home was 401-19th SE, died Sunday at 1:15 a.m. in Pleasant Grove Nursing Home here. Born in Brydtown [sic, Pattonville] community, March 6, 1883, he was a son of Henry Tandy Lewis and the former Sarah Frances Boyd, and he married the late Callie Carpenter. He was a member of the College Church of Christ. Surviving are four children: Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Akin of Paris; Mrs. Hollis Bell, Pecos; Ben Lewis, Dallas; and Joe Lewis, Temple, OK; also seven grandchildren; one brother and two sisters: Dr. R.L. Lewis and Mrs. Fred Millsap, Paris; and Mrs. Nat Troy, Dallas. Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.'
On the same stone with Callie Carpenter Lewis.
He attended Potter College in Kentucky.
He had an amusing personality and in his late years, liked going in his truck, being around old friends, and sitting at a favorite nearby gas station, which he frequented often. One grandson recalled a time in church, his shirt started to smolder because his pipe apparently was not out. Also, one occasion he caused his wife Callie to be upset, when after going to the farm, he got in the bathtub while wearing his dirty boots.
