M. S. Carpenter, who served as sheriff of Collingsworth County from 1918 until 1920, died in Dallas Saturday, August 31.
He was the father of Mrs. E. W. Moss of Wellington and Pharr and of Mrs. Bedford Harrison of Shamrock.
Burial services were held at Paris, which was the family home for many years.
Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter moved from here after he completed his term as sheriff, but returned a few years ago to make this their home for a short time.

Dr. E. W. Moss, who for half his life ministered to the sick of Collingsworth County, died at his home near Mission Saturday, December 7, at 12:45 a.m. after a lengthy illness. He was 64 years, 10 months and 10 days of age.
Ill health has caused Dr. Moss to give up the practice of medicine several years ago, and for several seasons he and Mrs. Moss spent each winter in the Rio Grande Valley. Last spring, because of his health, they went there to make their home. His death was attributed to heart trouble and cerebral hemorrhage.
Dr. Moss first came to Collingsworth County in 1911 and settled in Quail. He practiced medicine there for seven years, then in 1919, after he had served in the United States Army Medical Corps during the first World War, he moved to Wellington, where he practiced for the remainder of his active life.
Throughout his more than 30 years here, Dr. Moss represented the finest of his profession. Friends had long recognized that he was interested in the welfare of others than in any personal gain that he might receive. He was untiring in his profession and a benefactor to his fellow man.
Although he practiced throughout the county and was recognized for his medical skill and personal kindness, he remained in particular the beloved doctor of the hundreds throughout the Quail area and western part of the county.
Dr. Edgar Wright Moss was a native Texan, born at Lingleville, Erath County on January 27, 1882. He grew up and received his early education there. Dr. Moss attended the school of medicine at Vanderbilt University and completed his work at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1910.
He came to Quail on October 11 of the following year.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, having obeyed the gospel when a young man, and he lived a faithful Christian life from that time.
Dr. Moss was member of the Texas State Medical Association, the Panhandle Medical Association and the Tri-County- Medical Association. He helped to found the latter organization and served as its president several years. He also was chairman of the section on gynecology and obstetrics of the Panhandle Medical Association for one year. He held membership in the American Legion also.
In recognition of the work he had done, Dr. Moss was made an honorary member of the State Medical Association at its annual meeting in May.
Dr. Moss served in the Medical Corps of the United State Army as a first lieutenant during World War I.
He was united in marriage with Miss Bess Carpenter on March 9, 1921. She survives him, as do two sisters and three brothers, Mrs. S.E. Price of Eastland, Mrs. Stella Price, W.T. Moss and M.C. Moss of DeMoines, NM, and a large number of nieces and nephews.
Dr. Moss was interested in many things and many people during his long medical career, but he was particularly interested in young men starting in the profession. After he retired from active practice, he gave his medical library to Dr. Elmer Knox Jones, who will return here in January to practice. His instruments went to Dr. George A. Burgess, a young doctor at Mission.

The Lamar County Echo, November 1979. 'Clanton Bedford Harrison, 79, of 3125 Clarksville, Apt. 148, died Thursday evening, November 15, 1979, in a local hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the sanctuary of the First Christian Church, with Dr. Raymond Armstrong officiating. Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home was in charge of interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Harrison was born in Paris on June 10, 1900, son of John W. Harrison and Laura Smith Harrison. He attended Paris High School and graduated from Baylor University. He and Miss Clara Carpenter were married on June 26, 1926. He was employed as a math teacher and football coach of Paris High School for four years, having been the first football coach of the school. In 1931 he moved to Shamrock Schools. He was a former president of the Shamrock Chamber of Commerce, a former director of the United Fund, a member of the Lion's Club, a member of the Shamrock Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, and was active in the Booster Club and the Red Cross. He established the Bedford Harrison Insurance Co. in 1942, which he operated for 35 years prior to his retirement in 1977, when he moved back to Paris. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, and of the Rotary Club.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Bedford Harrison, Jr., of Houston; one sister, Mrs. Z. P. Stevenson of Houston; three grandchildren, Mrs. Jeffrey Harrison of Spartanburg, S. D., Clanton B. Harrison III of Galveston, and Elizabeth Harrison of Texas A&M University; and one great-grandchild. His brother was the late Barney Harrison of Paris.
Pallbearers were Bill Hale, Walter Bassano, Wayne Anderson, Jerome Wright, Pat Ryan, Raymond Berry, Don Wilson and David Harrison.

Mrs. M.S. Carpenter, who made her home in Wellington for a number of years and who was the wife of a former sheriff, died in Shamrock Hospital about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 6, following a short illness. She was 79.
She had made her home in Shamrock since 1949.
Mrs. Carpenter was born on March 25, 1883, in Selmer, Tennessee, and was the former Lola Phillips.
She was married to Mr. Carpenter August 25, 1905 at Paris.
Later they moved to Wellington and he served as sheriff from 1918 until 1920.
In the mid-1930's they returned here and lived for a time. She also had lived in Dallas, Springfield, MO and Paris, Texas.
She was a member of First Christian Church.
Surviving Mrs. Carpenter are a daughter and two sons: Mrs. C. B. Harrison of Shamrock, John Mead Carpenter of Lubbock, and Marcellus Carpenter of Houston; there are four grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and a brother, J. G. Phillips of Payson, Utah.

Funeral services were conducted Dec 7 at Gallant Funeral Home for Dave Lee Rollins, who died in Smyrna Nursing Home, Smyrna, on Monday (Dec 3, 1990). He was 64.
Burial was in Gum Springs Cemetery beside of his late wife, Mae Hill Rollins.
A native of Franklin County, he was a retired painter and a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Burtib of Huntsville; two step-daughters, Carol Vaughn of Fayetteville and Barbara Thomas of Huntsville; a son, Joe Rollins of Fayetteville; four brothers, J. T. Rollins, Flintville, James Rollins and W. B. Rollins, both of Akron, Ohio, and Lewis Charles Rollings of Texas; two grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
