Notes

78. Templeton "Temple" Carpenter

This person was once linked as a son of Thomas O. Carpenter III-34309 who was born 30 Sep 1781. But it apparently was the wrong Thomas, probably the father also known as Thomas was the father?
This descendancy line submitted by Shellina Leigh Carpenter via E-Mail.  While some details need to be worked out, the basic line is here.
BUT ... Thomas Carpenter-20120 descendants have CDYb=39 where as others in Group 7 have CDYb=38.
Thus Thomas C-20120 is challenged.

Group 7 - reference line 22184, 16270 & 20393.

NOTE:
Per images supplied by Steve Carpenter ( scarp1971@yahoo.com ) of the above book allowed the following transcript of those images are provided.
Early Carpenters in Greene County
Thomas Carpenter III came to Washington Township in the 1820s. He was born in Amherst County, Virginia in 1781, about six weeks after the death of his father, Thomas Carpenter, Jr.
Family tradition has it that Thomas, Jr. served in the Virginia Militia during the Revolution, and died on furlough in July, 1781, leaving a wife and four children.
During the 1790s, the widow and children migrated to Knox County, Tennessee, with brothers of her late husband. There, in 1801, Thomas married Mary Ann Shook, born 1782 in Hampshire County, now West Virginia. (Shook’s Mill run and Shook’s Gap, still on maps of Knoxville, were named for her father.)
About 1813, they moved to Harrison County, Indian Territory. There were in the 1820 census of Harrison and the 1830 census of Greene County. They had fourteen children, nine sons and five daughters, born in Knox and Harrison Counties, 1802-1826.
At least seven children married in Greene County. They lived about a mile south of Lyons, where Thomas died about 1845, Mary Ann a little earlier.
The writer descends from son, John (1816-1874) and wife, Mahala Simons (1822-1861), married in 1841. They lived south of Lyons, on land purchased from his parents in 1839.
In 1860, John signed first among twenty eight persons who filed a remonstrance with the County Commissioners against formation of a new county which would take Washington and Stafford, and parts of Fairplay and Stockton Townships from Greene.
The earliest known record of this Carpenter family is a deed of 1765 by which Thomas Carpenter, Sr. purchased land along Rockfish River in Amherst County, Virginia.
His eldest son, Thomas, Jr., was then about fifteen years old, and around thirty years old at death in 1781.
Thomas Sr. may have been born as early as 1730. He may possibly have been the immigrant from England; or, he … (next page) might have been of the second or third generation of this Carpenter family in America. Records for some Virginia Counties are lost.
He sold his land and property to two sons in 1792, and is presumed to have died a year or two later.
In 1776, Thomas, Sr. and son Thomas Jr. and John signed a Petition of Dissenters, praying the legislative body convened at Williamsburg to make all religious sects equal before the law, in order that members of other faiths no longer be taxed for support of the Church of England.
Amherst Court records of Public Service show that in January, 1781, Thomas, Sr. sold one hundred thirty six pounds of bacon (5 pounds, 2 shillings) for use of the Militia on duty. Four sons, Thomas, Jr., John, Benjamin, and William served in the Revolution.
John served three years in the Virginia Continental Line, was in several battles, was captured at Charleston, South Carolina in 1780, and a prisoner of war over two years. He lived in Tennessee and Kentucky, and in 1828, joined some of his family in Owen County, Indiana and died there some time after, on pension.
In 1832, Benjamin, then in Schuyler County, Illinois, was granted a pension for Revolutionary service, which included the siege of Yorktown and capture of Cornwallis; he died in Knox County Illinois in 1840.

Regarding the first part of …
Early Carpenters in Greene County
Thomas Carpenter III came to Washington Township in the 1820s. He was born in Amherst County, Virginia in 1781, about six weeks after the death of his father, Thomas Carpenter, Jr.  ß No – his grandfather ThomasC-5328
Family tradition has it that Thomas, Jr. served in the Virginia Militia during the Revolution, and died on furlough in July, 1781, leaving a wife and four children. ß No – his grandfather ThomasC-5328 is clearly documented as serving as a Ranger in 1759 then later in Amherst County Militia in 1776. There is no documentation his son served.
During the 1790s, the widow and children migrated to Knox County, Tennessee, with brothers of her late husband. ß No evidence of TC-5328 (d. 1781 VA) or TCII-aka Jr.-20120 (d. 1840 Amherst, VA) widows moving to TN. We know TC-3rd11688 did move with at least one brother to KY by 1801 then into IN by 1820.
There, in 1801, Thomas married Mary Ann Shook, born 1782 in Hampshire County, now West Virginia. (Shook’s Mill run and Shook’s Gap, still on maps of Knoxville, were named for her father.)  ß The grandson TC3rd-11688 married Mary Ann Shook.
About 1813, they moved to Harrison County, Indian Territory. There were in the 1820 census of Harrison and the 1830 census of Greene County. They had fourteen children, nine sons and five daughters, born in Knox and Harrison Counties, 1802-1826.  ß This matches what we know of TC3rd-11688 except for the number of children!
At least seven children married in Greene County. They lived about a mile south of Lyons, where Thomas died about 1845, Mary Ann a little earlier. ß This again is for TC3rd-11688.
The writer descends from son, John (1816-1874) and wife, Mahala Simons (1822-1861), married in 1841. They lived south of Lyons, on land purchased from his parents in 1839.  ß John C-11727.

Hi John,
Thomas Carpenter III of Amherst Co. VA and Greene Co. IN didn't marry Catherine Shamburger -- his wife was named Sarah. The marriage of a Thomas Carpenter, or an Owen Carpenter (both are claimed at times), to a Catherine Shamberger also isn't correct -- someone, years ago, stated that Owen Carpenter's wife was a Shamburger but when questioned for proof, stated it was because Owen was buried in the Shamburger Cemetery. As you know that isn't proof of anything, especially if the Shamburgers came along later -- the cemetery most likely started out as the Carpenter Cemetery. Nevertheless, many people repeat it as fact and it's all over the internet as though it's truth.

Sarah C. Foster

BIRTH:
,, TN,or,,, Kentucky, USA

90. Carpenter

Unknown named daughter who had a daliance with a son of Benjamin Greer.
Benjamin Greer from NC had a bunch of sons. He died in 1816 and left a will. (His lineage is well documented in NC.) Most of the sons stayed in NC since they were already grown. The oldest son of Benjamin that came to KY with him may have been Aquilla. He still lived in KY in 1850 and 1860, and he would have been in his early teens when Levi was conceived. He was a head of household in 1820 in Green County, with 11 children under the age of 16. Some of those could have been his younger siblings.

NOTE:
A direct male Carpenter descendant has Y-DNA tested and has matched (110/111) four male descendants of James Greer, b. abt 1770 NC. He is believed to be the brother of Benjamin. There is also another 109/111 match with another Greer. Testing via FTDNA.com.
All as of Aug 2020. JRC

Aquilla Greer

Likely Aquilla Greer ...

219. Levi Duplicate of 34594 Carpenter

UPDATE:
Levi Carpenter was not sired by a Medlock but a Greer. This per Y-DNA testing on a direct biological male descendant via the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project.

NAME:
Levi with no middle initial. No proof where a B came from.

UPDATE: In June 2018 – Using genetic distance - more Greers than Scott surnames. This led to a review of Greer Y-DNA Project groups. Their Groups 08, 09 and 10 match FTDNA # 20834 exactly. 37/37 – Genetic distance 0.
When we look at markers 38-67 we find further resolution (67/67) with FTDNA 42120, of Group 08, who is a descendant of James T. Greer of Laurens County, SC.

According to tax lists and topographical mapping, the Greers owned land on Greasy Creek. John Carpenter never owned land, but paid taxes on Robinson's Creek. It's hard to tell how far apart the two families lived since we don't know just where they lived along those two waterways. It may be 15-20 miles or less.
Raquel Adds:
The Robinson's Creek where my Carpenters lived was in Green County but when Taylor County was formed, it was taken into that county. It's in the southern tip of Taylor County now. It flows into the Green River near Campbellsville. Greasy Creek is a few miles west of there, still in Green County.
Comment:
Greasey Creek, not the community of Greasey Creek in Pike County, KY but actual creek in Green County, KY starts near the Greasey Creek Baptist Church in the unincorporated community of Exie, KY on Edmonton Rd. The creek flows mostly westward until it combines with the Little Barren River near the end of Bishop Ln that is off of KY 1048. Measured by a straight line it is 5.33 miles.
Robinson Creek enters the Green River lake near the junction of KY 70 and 76 WSW of Campbellsville, KY. This is just north of Elk Horn another unincorporated community. Robinson Creek is formed at the juncture of Cudler Creek, Sapp Branch and Murrell Branch near the junction of Merrimac Rd and Merrimac Peck Rd in the unincorporated community of Merrimac in Taylor County. Measured by a straight line it is 10.47 miles.
When I Googled the distance from Elk Horn to Greasey Creek Baptist Church, I get a road distance of 25 miles. The straight line distance between the two creeks is about 18 miles. Please note that there is a lot of similar named locations in KY!

91. William R. Carpenter

E-MAIL: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 From: Beth MacDonald
In the Van Wert library, I found this in the Portrait and Biographical
History of Van Wert (Oh) County:
James W. Carpenter, b. 2-20-1821 near Richmond, Va.  He married
4-28-1842,  Susannah Ream (b. in Fairfield Co., Oh 5-7-1823).  Susannah
was the daughter of Jacob and Rebecca Clines Ream.
His father was William R. Carpenter, b. VA 2-3-1792 and married 1st,
Betsey Barnes and 2nd, James' mother Catherine Brewer.  William R. was
in the war of 1812.  Father of William R. was John Carpenter, b. VA
moved to Fairfield Co., OH, said to have fought in the Revolutionary
War.
James W. and Susannah had the following children:  Sarah J., Charles
W., Mary A., Rebecca E., David S., Margaret E., Emma C., Clarissa Pl,
Alvira, Wilson H.L., Minerva I., Lucetta and Iga O.  The first six born
in Fairfield County and the remainder born in Van Wert, Co. Oh.
Does anyone have these Carpenters?  I am especially interested to
know if the John and Margaret of my previous post (John C. Carpenter, b.
around 1807 in
Richmond, VA, d. Dec. 1878, Van Wert Co., OH who married Margaret
Ream(s), b. c.1825, Ohio) are related to James W. and Susannah.  The two
families lived on adjoining land in Van Wert Co.
Beth MacDonald.

Probably the same William as born 3 Feb 1792.

Doshia Benningfield

Doshia Benningfield  married James Carpenter in 1819 in Green county KY.
James must have died between 1830 & 1835, as Doshia is shown
in Green county IN as married to John Johnston in Green county
IN in 1835. Doshia then  shows up in 1850 in Beech Creek
Twp., of Green county, IN, with daughters, the youngest being Docia.
Docia is not listed later in 1860 with either Johnson or Carpenter's  but
she is listed with Dr Neeley family  living next door to John and Delila
Vandeventer, Than later Docia Carpenter marries James K. Vandeventer in
1865. It was recently learned that Dr Neeley was the Nephew to John
Johnston no guardenship papers were located, I can not find the exact name of
her parents, or the date and location of John Johnson & Doshia Carpenter.
Docia Ann and James K. Carpenter have 2 grandchildren alive yet.  However
I am unable to locate them.  A Grandson says his grandfather was alive
when he was born in 1907.  It is thought that they are buried at Adel
Cemetery in Adel, Owen, IN. As of yet no head stone or death
record has shown up.

I read a note on another site that January 1, 2001 was deadline for
information for the Carpenter CD.  Is that correct?
Dale Barnes had a book that he was going to send to me that was written on
the Carpenter Family, and then I was to send it to you.  Howver,  he had
taken it to the library to copy for himself, and left the original, so I have
not yet received it, however, I can send you what I have.  I am sure you
don't have all this information as you asked him for it.  Also, it ties into
my Carpenter Family, which you don't have per your message to me the latter
part of 2000.   Fran.

If you can't use any of this that is ok - you will have it for the next time
around.  Hopefully it makes some sense.
The information I have on William Chester Family, I secure from Richard Earle
Carpenter, and through the Family Bible of Sarah Louisa Carpenter.  The
information on my family is from Carpenter family Bibles, Johnson Family
Bible, Martin Family Bible.  Census records, and many clippings and old
letters.
I do not know when my grandfather - Henry Carpenter lived in Texas, but I do have an article that he wrote to the Advocate and sent to them about life in
Willis, Texas.  It is not dated and I do not know what town the Advocate
newspaper may be located in.  If you would like a copy of that, I can send to
you.  Fran.

BIRTH:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coahuila_y_Tejas
Coahuila y Tejas (Coahuila and Texas) was one of the constituent states of the newly established United Mexican States under its 1824 Constitution.

It had two capitals: first Saltillo, and then Monclova. For administrative purposes, the state was divided into three districts: Béxar, comprising the area covered by Texas; Monclova, comprising northern Coahuila; and Río Grande Saltillo, comprising southern Coahuila.

The state remained in existence until the adoption of the 1835 "Constitutional Bases", whereby the federal republic was converted into a unitary one, and the nation's states, (estados), were turned into departments (departamentos). The State of Coahuila and Texas was split in two and became the Department of Coahuila and the Department of Texas.
