NOTES for William
Much more information included in various issues of the Journal of the Magoffin County Historical Society by Mrs. Iva P. Baker, 3716 So. 65th West Ave., Tulsa, OK 74107 (as of August, 1985) source: The Howards of Eastern Kentucky, Vol. 2, p. 396
There is a Wyatt Carpenter in the 1850 Census Index in Rome Township, Lawrence County, Ohio. (There is also a Caleb Howard in Delaware County. I have seen a Caleb Howard in PA in the late 1700's and I don't know much about him. I suppose it could be the same Caleb Howard in the Ohio census. PA - Ohio was a pretty straightforward/common migration route, I think. I don't think the PA Caleb Howard would fit into Marcus' story.] Lawrence County borders Greenup County. Lawrence County, Ohio originally was part of Greenup County, Kentucky? Did Lawrence County did not exist when Wyatt arrived in Greenup County? It was created in . If Wyatt stayed in Greenup, while his children did the migrating....which is the way Marcus' story reads, he would have been in Lawrence County at the time of the census. Now I need to check his age in the actual record.
There is also a W. Carpenter in the 1840 Ohio Census Index in Fran County
There are no Carpenters in the 1820 Floyd Co. KY Census.
Dad said that there were Carpenters in Kentucky that we weren’t related to.

"Gilruth on Early Settlers in Lawrence County
from the Iron Register
February 1, 1872 to July 18, 1872
Transcribed by Mary Ann St. Louis
February 1, 1872
The following interesting letter, written by Reverend James Gilruth, and over 80 years, and who has been in the Methodist ministry for over 50 years, was furnished by Gerenal W. H. Kelly, to whom it was written. It treats of the early settlers in the lower part of the country and the upper end of Scioto. We are promised more of this valuable correspondence and will certainly be much pleased to gie it to our readers:
In under taking to give a statistical history of the lower end of Lawrence, the upper end of Sc ioto, and the central part of Greenup Counties, I am not stimulated thereto by ray hope of gain, either of fame, or that of pecuniary nature. Nor is it my aim to enter into the political, or moral character of those pioneer settlers, nor extensively into their social practices. I simply desire to make you and those that may feel interested, acquainted with some facts in regard to persons, times and places, which I a satified no other living moral can. These facts I give entirely from memory, having kept no written records of any of them; that there may be errors in dates and names is altogether probable.
......In this vicinity below lived old MR. CARPENTER, A Baptist, and the first preacher of any kind in this bottom. He preached occasionally, but made n attempts to form a church, or administer the ordinances. I think it probaby that he was not ordained. He had one son named William. He became an ensign in Captain John Kelly company of militia, learned surveying, kept the fist store between Storms Creek and the French Grant. He made one of the most intellectual men raised in those times in this vicinity: married Hanah Clarke, sold out and moved to Missouri."
The following was written by Marcus Carpenter:
Among Wyatt's children were two sons, one named William (nicknamed Pumpkin Bill) and another son named Stephen. Bill Carpenter married Ann Howard. Steve Carpenter married Ann's half-sister, Nancy. Bill had a large family -- Steve, George, Ben, Sam and another son that was killed on Spring Fork. Two daughters, Vadey who married a Marshall and Sarah who married John Fletcher. [Nancy’s mother was an Indian girl who was hired to take care of Ann and her father, Caleb Howard, after Caleb’s wife died]

I think Nancy Miller has a copy and it was published by the Magoffin County Historical Society in The Journal.

Notes for Sarah "Sally" Howard:
Excerpt from article, written by Todd Preston, the president of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the January 14, 1999 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper
David Temple (forty9er@inreach.com) inquired about the Carpenter family. Our Howard book lists that Sarah Howard who married William Carpenter was the dau of William Howard and Millie Salyer. Ms. Temple says family info says William Carpenter married a dau of Caleb Howard.
Our Howard book lists children Benjamin, Andrew, Stephen, John, Samuel, and Malinda who married in 1858 to Elijah Lovely. The 1840 Breathitt census lists William Carpenter age 30/40, wife age 20/30, with 3 males and 1 female in the household. By 1850 Sarah "Sally" Carpenter is listed as age 38 with the above children plus George age 3 (b. 1847) which seems to imply that William Carpenter may have deceased before 1850.
Sarah Havenna Howard age about 38 married around 1850 to Enoch Morgan (Breathitt Co. marriages) and the 1860 Breathitt Co. census lists Enoch Morgan age 57, Sarah age 47 b. Harlan Co. KY with son George age 15 and Louisa age 7. The 1870 Breathitt census has Enoch Morgan age 67 b. NC, Sarah age 56, Matilda age 7 and Malinda age 5. The 1880 Breathitt census lists Sarah Morgan at age 62 living with her dau Malinda age 35 who had married Elijah Lovely.

NAME:  Middle name as listed maybe a nickname?
DEATH: Aft Nov 1873 but another has death in 1875.

I don't have a will connecting Joseph to Fielding b. 1767 but have a
couple documents that will lead to believe this is the case and does
tell me this is true.  I have never seen any evidence that Fielding
is connected to Stephen Carpenter as some people have surmised in the
way of Yelverton.
Thanks  Rod Carpenter

John,
On Group 7 it shows Stephen the dad of Fielding and Yelverton.  Has anyone given you info that proves this?  I can "kinda" prove that my 3rd great-grandfather Joseph was a son of old Fielding.
1900 Madison Co., KY census Pg 133B where Edward Carpenter, who is a grandson of Joseph is listed as a cousin to Anderson Carpenter, who is a son of Wilson who was a son of old Fielding.  Thus, Joseph and Wilson have to be brothers. Joseph also named his first son Fielding (my 2nd great grandpa) after Joseph's father. In 1860, Joseph and Wilson live next to each other.  Also the name similarities of the family are very similar.  But I think the proof actually lies in the census record stated above.
Rod Carpenter

Joseph listed as father of Anderson on marriage consent for Anderson.
Joseph listed as adm of Elisha Carpenter's estate on 4 Feb 1865.
Joseph was bondsman for marriage of Jahu Vaughn and Mary Davis in 1867.

1870 Madison Co., KY census Pg 314 has year as 1810.

John,
Thanks for all the info you sent and will absorb this and try to move
forward somehow. I have not done much genealogy for several years but
now back at it.
I did notice one thing concerning my 3rd great-gpa Joseph Carpenter.
You ID him as 13M.
Joseph never did marry Anna Gabbard. They had a child by the name of
William Hooly Carpenter (Last name of Gabbard also used). I found a
death cert on him plus spoke to a descendant who said she always heard
William was illigit. William was raised by Anna Gabbard's parents as
she married a Peters.
From there, Joseph had kids starting with Fielding born about 1838.
Him and all kids after that I believe were by Nancy Runyon who Joseph
never married till 17 Jun 1860 in Jackson Co, KY. All kids were born by
then. Why do I believe she was the mother? I found a deed in Jackson
Co, KY where Fielden and his wife Mariam RUNYON and Josiah and his wife
Mariah RUNYON to Wilson Carpenter. Wilson would be their uncle. Then
at the bottom they sign the deed as Fielden Carpenter and Silas
Carpenter. (Josia also went by Silas). My understanding that regarding
deeds, you went by the mother's name if you were illigit. I also have
death certs for 2 of the children of Joseph and Nancy Runyon Carpenter
(Martin & Anderson) who list Nancy Runyon as the mother.
So why a marriage so late? As you know, in Kentucky many records were
lost during the civil war and or fires. Jackson Co, KY was formed
around 1858 so did they decide they needed an official record of
marriage at the courthouse and tied the knot again? I think not as why
did the kids have to use the Runyon name on the deed. Guessing they
just decided to tie the knot after all those years.
Thoughts?
Rod
