NOTE:
He served in Battery G of the 200th Coastal Artillery Corp. He was a coproral in the USAGF (US Army Garrison Forces). The marker was ordered in 1950. He had been with the New Mexico National Guard that was called up in 1940. Please note that he was was listed as a Sergeant in the bio section below. It was not uncommon due to loss of records, at that time, that promotion information did not make it to Washington, DC for official records.GRAVE: image
Richard Emil Carpenter
Birth: 27 Oct 1918 Spencer, Owen County, Indiana, USA
Death: 1 Sep 1942 (aged 23) Philippines
Burial: Masonic Cemetery, Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico, USA
Memorial #: 109161975
Bio: Sgt. Richard E. Carpenter, Bataan Veteran, Accorded Military Honors In Burial Service Held Here Monday. Funeral services for Sgt. Robert E. Carpenter, who died while a prisoner of war on Bataan, were held Monday afternoon at 3:30 from the Cox Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Harold E. Johnson, pastor of the Santa Rita Community Church, officiated. Mrs. Robert Donahue sang several hymns during the chapel service. At the Masonic cemetery, where interment was made, District Attorney Thomas P. Foy, veteran companion of the deceased who was also on Bataan, made appropriate remarks following a service by the Silver City DAV with Michael Doty in charge. The color guard was composed of members of the John Storz American Legion Post of Central. The firing squad was made p of guardsmen of the National Guard, Battery B. Pall bearers were all former members of the 200th C. (AA) National Guard captured on Bataan. They were: Fred Starns, Calvin Graef, Ralph Clark, Joe Goforth, Nick Chintis, and Thomas P. Foy. Robert E. Carpenter was born at Spences, Ind., Oct. 27, 1918, while his father was serving with the U.S. Army in France. Upon his father's return, the family moved to Indianapolis where he attended grade school. The family later returned to Spencer where he attended school at Freedom, Ind., until the carpenters came to New Mexico in 1935. At that time he enrolled in the Teachers High School and was offered a scholarship to the University of New Mexico. Death occurred September 1, 1942, in the Philippines after valiant service to his country. Sgt. Carpenter was the first hereditary member of the now disbanded Military Order of World War, to die. His father was a member of that World War One organization. Survivors are the parents, three brothers, Richard of Yaba, Calif.; Jack, who was recently discharged from the U.S. Navy, now of Silver City, and Cadet Gordon Carpenter of West Point, now spending his summer furlough here. All were here for the funeral service.
