Early Carpenters in Greene County - extract
The writer descends from son, John (1816-1874) and wife, Mahala Simons (1822-1861), married in 1841. They lived south of Lyons, on land purchased from his parents in 1839.
In 1860, John signed first among twenty eight persons who filed a remonstrance with the County Commissioners against formation of a new county which would take Washington and Stafford, and parts of Fairplay and Stockton Townships from Greene.
The earliest known record of this Carpenter family is a deed of 1765 by which Thomas Carpenter, Sr. purchased land along Rockfish River in Amherst County, Virginia.
His eldest son, Thomas, Jr., was then about fifteen years old, and around thirty years old at death in 1781.
Thomas Sr. may have been born as early as 1730. He may possibly have been the immigrant from England; or, he … (next page)
might have been of the second or third generation of this Carpenter family in America. Records for some Virginia Counties are lost.
He sold his land and property to two sons in 1792, and is presumed to have died a year or two later.
In 1776, Thomas, Sr. and son Thomas Jr. and John signed a Petition of Dissenters, praying the legislative body convened at Williamsburg to make all religious sects equal before the law, in order that members of other faiths no longer be taxed for support of the Church of England.
Amherst Court records of Public Service show that in January, 1781, Thomas, Sr. sold one hundred thirty six pounds of bacon (5 pounds, 2 shillings) for use of the Militia on duty. Four sons, Thomas, Jr., John, Benjamin, and William served in the Revolution.
John served three years in the Virginia Continental Line, was in several battles, was captured at Charleston, South Carolina in 1780, and a prisoner of war over two years. He lived in Tennessee and Kentucky, and in 1828, joined some of his family in Owen County, Indiana and died there some time after, on pension.
In 1832, Benjamin, then in Schuyler County, Illinois, was granted a pension for Revolutionary service, which included the siege of Yorktown and capture of Cornwallis; he died in Knox County Illinois in 1840.

James Carpenter, a prosperous merchant at Lyons, and a descendent of one of the pioneer families of Greene County, was born in the township where he yet resides in 1844. He is one of three surviving children in a family of nine born to John and Mahala (Simmons) Carpenter, both of whom were natives of Indiana and who located in Greene County as early as 1826,participating in all the hardships and inconveniences of pioneer life. John Carpenter departed this life in 1861, and his widow in 1874. James passed his youth and early manhood on the home farm and attending the public schools. He began clerking, after farming for himself for some time, but in 1876 embarked in merchandising at Lyons with R. M. Gilbert as parnter. At the end of about four years, he became the firm's successor. At present he has a partner, and they carry a well-assorted stock amounting ot over $5,000. Besides his interest in this property, Mr. Carpenter owns forty acres of land and several town lots in Lyons. He is a Democrat in political sentiment and is one of the county's best citizens. In 1880, he was united in marriage with Miss Allie Hornbeck.

F. M. Gilbert, a native of Williams County, Ohio, was born August 17, 1848, and in October, 1865, removed with his father to Greene County, Ind., which has since been his home. ...
[He] embarked in merchandising at Lyons in 1872, with D. M. Bynum as a partner. At the end of eighteen months, he sold out, but in September, 1875, again began merchandising at Lyons. In March, 1876, James Carpenter became his partner, and at the end of about four years the successor of the firm, by reason of Mr. Gilbert's selling out and engaging in the grain trade.

UPDATE:
Levi Carpenter was not sired by a Medlock but a Greer. This per Y-DNA testing on a direct biological male descendant via the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project.UPDATE: In June 2018 - Using genetic distance - more Greers than Scott surnames. This led to a review of Greer Y-DNA Project groups. Their Groups 08, 09 and 10 match FTDNA # 20834 exactly. 37/37 - Genetic distance 0.
When we look at markers 38-67 we find further resolution (67/67) with FTDNA 42120, of Group 08, who is a descendant of James T. Greer of Laurens County, SC.
Raquel wrote ...
And I probably told you there were Greers in Green County, KY from 1807 to 1819. Benjamin Greer from NC had a bunch of sons. He died in 1816 and left a will. (His lineage is well documented in NC.) Most of the sons stayed in NC since they were already grown. The oldest son of Benjamin that came to KY with him may have been Aquilla. He still lived in KY in 1850 and 1860, and he would have been in his early teens when Levi was conceived. He was a head of household in 1820 in Green County, with 11 children under the age of 16. Some of those could have been his younger siblings.
According to tax lists and topographical mapping, the Greers owned land on Greasy Creek. John Carpenter never owned land, but paid taxes on Robinson's Creek. It's hard to tell how far apart the two families lived since we don't know just where they lived along those two waterways. It may be 15-20 miles or less.
Raquel Adds:
The Robinson's Creek where my Carpenters lived was in Green County but when Taylor County was formed, it was taken into that county. It's in the southern tip of Taylor County now. It flows into the Green River near Campbellsville. Greasy Creek is a few miles west of there, still in Green County.
Comment:
Greasey Creek, not the community of Greasey Creek in Pike County, KY but actual creek in Green County, KY starts near the Greasey Creek Baptist Church in the unincorporated community of Exie, KY on Edmonton Rd. The creek flows mostly westward until it combines with the Little Barren River near the end of Bishop Ln that is off of KY 1048. Measured by a straight line it is 5.33 miles.
Robinson Creek enters the Green River lake near the junction of KY 70 and 76 WSW of Campbellsville, KY. This is just north of Elk Horn another unincorporated community. Robinson Creek is formed at the juncture of Cudler Creek, Sapp Branch and Murrell Branch near the junction of Merrimac Rd and Merrimac Peck Rd in the unincorporated community of Merrimac in Taylor County. Measured by a straight line it is 10.47 miles.
When I Googled the distance from Elk Horn to Greasey Creek Baptist Church, I get a road distance of 25 miles. The straight line distance between the two creeks is about 18 miles. Please note that there is a lot of similar named locations in KY!OLDER info follows ...
PARENTS:
There is a possibility Levi is the son of Mary O'Niel Carpenter and a man
by the last name of Matlock or Medlock. This John raised him as his own son,
probably adopting him. < --- Discounted - see UPDATE below >
A Carpenter family get-together in late 1920's in Owen County
IN. Tempers flared, words were exchanged in an argument
between two of Levi's progeny. One of the offending parties shouted to the
effect he "was going to change his name to Matlock, which is what it's
supposed to be anyway!" [This told by Richard Carpenter, of Safford Arizona,
who was a boy then, and wittnessed the altercation].
The oral tradition passed down was tha Levi's father was a man named
Matlock or Medlock, who abandoned his wife Mary Carpenter, daughter of
John Carpenter. John took Levi in and raised him as his own son. This
story was corroborated by Walker Ooley, an old-timer of Owen county, now
deceased. Walker was born in 1893 and is a grandson of Levi who heard the
story from Levi's grandson, Charles Carpenter.
Levi Carpenter was born February 23 ,1810 in Green county
KY, according to his obituary. However on the Census for
1850,1860,1870, and 1880, Levi reports being born in Tennessee.
His children unanimously claim on the 1880 and 1900 census that their father
was born in KY. We do know that John Carpenter was living in KY in
1810, but if Levi was indeed the son of that scoundrel Matlock, he could
have been born in Tennessee.MARRIAGE: 1831

A choice find was the marriage entry in Adair , KY, for
December 18, 1850 of a Robert Medlock to Mary Carpenter daughter to John
Carpenter. Adair county is adjacent to Green county, KY. Adair was
formed from Green county in 1802. A search of Green county,KY tax
lists showed John Carpenter living there untill 1803, and then he is on
the Adair county KY tax list in 1804 & 1805. He must have moved ther in 1803
after the tax enumeration was completed, because the 1803 Adair Estray Book #1 lists a
John Carpenter on Casey's Creek as a finder of lost livestock. So we see
that he indeed live in Adair at the time of the Marriage of Mary
Carpenter to Robert Medlock. The casey's Creek area is ony 6 or 8 miles
from the Robinson's Creek area of Green County where he lived before
1803, and returned later.
What become of Robert Medlock and Mary Carpenter is still a mystery.
His name has not been found on any census or tax lists. No military
service record shows his whereabouts, either as Madlock or Matlock. There
wer other Medlock / Matlocks in Green / Adair area, namley a Isham
Matlock / Medlock [ spelled both ways ] Isham Matlock knew John Carpenter
for many years before,as they were listed near each other on the Nelson
KY ,tax list in 1789 & 1790.
In 1810 ,the year Levi was born, John Carpenter had moved a few miles
down the Green River to Muhlenberg . In his household, there were
four males under the age of ten,one male between ten and sixteen, two
males sixteen to twenty - six, and one male over forty - five., himself.
Of the females, there was one between ten and sixteen , one sixteen to
twenty - six, one over forty - five probably John's wife. We can
speculate that the seven sons were Nathaniel, James, John Jr., Joseph
,Moses , Solomon and Thomas. I don't knoe the names of the females,
presumably daughters of John. The marriage dates of all these sons are
well after 1810, so I don't think any of the females were daughter - in -
laws. If one of the females is Mary, then Levi would be among the males
under age ten. That category would be taken up by Thomas, Solomon,
Joseph, and Moses. The male, ten to sixteen would be John Jr.,and the two
between sixteen and twenty - six must be James and Nathaniel. If Robert
Medlock and Mary were in Tennessee, where Levi claims he was born , there
is a simple explaination whythey are not on any census for 1810. Fire
destroyed all the census of Tennessee, except two counties.SOURCE: This article was written by Raquel Carpenter Sonnenberg,7641

Hi John,
Good to hear from you. Yes, we are 4 for 4 with Greers at genetic distance of 0. And the TiP (time predictor) puts them at 99% probability of a common ancestor at the 4 to 8 generations depth. Levi is 4 generations back from my dad.
Along with the DNA evidence, there was the family lore that Levi was the illegitimate son of one of John Carpenter's daughters. And I probably told you there were Greers in Green County, KY from 1807 to 1819. Benjamin Greer from NC had a bunch of sons. He died in 1819 and left a will.
I tried to get a cousin in Owen County, Indiana to convince any male Carpenter NOT a descendant of Levi to take the DNA test but she had no luck. Superstitious, I guess. She herself is a Carpenter descendant not from Levi, so she knows who her Carpenter cousins are. She's a genealogist herself. John had 9 or 10 sons so there should be plenty of direct male descendants. I may renew my efforts, since comparing a non-Levi descendant's DNA would be so interesting.
The Scott connections are interesting. Maybe the Greer boys were fooling around with a variety of young ladies. Since the Scotts are matches at a genetic distance of 1 or greater, that connection is probably in earlier generations.
When one question is answered, then several more are raised!
Thanks so much for your interest.
Best wishes,
Raquel
