Andrew Carpenter 166,167, born Bet. 17 Aug 1831 - 16 Aug 1832 in Quicksand, Floyd County or Perry County, KY 168,169; died 10 May 1879 in Spring Fork, Quicksand Cr, Breathitt County, Kentucky 170,171; married (1) Hetty Gearheart 27 Jun 1852 in Breathitt Co., KY 172,173; born 1831 in Beaver, Floyd Co, Ky 173. 18 Dec 1873 in Breathitt County, KY; married (3) Sally Miller 21 Aug 1878 in Breathitt County, KY 174,175; born ca. 1856175.
Notes for Andrew Carpenter:
According to Marcus, Bill Carpenter had a son that was killed on Spring Fork.
An Andrew Carpenter was shot and killed by the Red Strings in 1879 on Spring Fork. His tombstone says he was murdered in 1879. Andrew was an ex-confederate. The Red Strings was the name of Capt. Bill Strong's unit after the war. This Andrew died May 10, 1879. Source - Stephen (Bowling), Breathitt County Chat Room, Jan 3, 1999.
"......But the worst aspect of his rule was his tendency to act as commanding officer long after the war was over. He is said to have held courts-martial and condemned to death those who challenged his control. These courts-martial, it was reported, were held at night with only a few trusted men present. There was no need for the accused to be on hand. Captain Bill would review the sins of the offender, ponder the case and in most cases, sentence the offender to death. Usually one of his trusted lieutenants was given the job of killing the condemned man at a convenient moment. No hurry. Sometimes it was months before the blow fell. But it fell, invariably. One day the doomed man would be riding along, going to work or to the store, probably not knowing he was doomed, when a shot would ring out from ambush." [source - Pearce, John Ed. Carter and Rowan County Kentucky
This pamphlet contains newspaper articles copied from The Rowan County News, The Carter County Herald, The Olive Hill Times (which was the predecessor of the Herald), The Flemingsburg Democrat, and The Mt. Sterling Advocate. These articles were transcribed from microfilmed copies, which were obtained from the University of Kentucky. The articles concerned my family members, locations of interest, and people of the area of historic interest.
Most of the print within quotation marks appears exactly as it did in the original. I later decided to correct some of the material. The obvious typos have been corrected. Some of the punctuation marks had been changed to improve readability. Occasionally I changed the verb tense and form. The editor of the Carter County Herald also had a problem with run-on sentences, but I elected only to try to punctuate them, rather than breaking them into separate sentences. None of the subject matter has been altered.
These old newspapers wrote the history of Carter and Rowan County Kentucky. Much of what I have put here pertains to my family, but some of it is of general historical interest.

IN LOVING MEMORY
"Aunt Jane Gearhart, better known as Sis Gearhart, died at her home on Tar Kiln, September 16, 1925 aged 70 years. Born in Breathitt County, March 31, 1855, she was married to Lafayette Gearhart, April 4, 1870, 55 years ago at the home of her father Andrew Carpenter, on Tar Kiln, the Rev. Andrew Johnson officiating. To this union were born ten children, four dead, six living. She is the last of a family of four children of Andrew Carpenter.
She was a devoted Christian for many years and praised the Lord that had spared their lives to a ripe old age. She was a companion tried and true; a devoted mother and friend to all the passing public. Her doors were ever open; her table ever spread, inviting all to come in, eat and rest, no one ever going hungry from her home. She ever blessed and cared for orphan children. After her marriage she spent the remainder of her life on an adjoining farm to the one they started life's journey on long before any enterprises came our way; before the great C.& O. Railway or the brick factories or crushers, mining and all were known. She leaves behind and aged husband, tottering on his cane at 79 years, and a host of relatives. (Breathitt County birth records indicate an unnamed female child, born on March 31, 1855, on Buckhorn Creek to Andrew Carpenter and his wife Hetty Gearhart).

His cousin Stephen, son of Stephen C., known as "Black Steve" or Black eyed Steve..  They were distinguished by color of their eyes. He was called Blue Eyed Stephen or Blue Eye Steve.  He really disliked White Steve, which some joked causing him a bit of iritation.

Dear Jean:
I was so pleased to hear from you and just wish I could know you better.
I much admit Gordon was one of my favorite nephews. I visited your family in Nebraska and am wondering which one is your father. I remember one was named Al and was named for his grandfather who was my brother.
I'm sorry I can't give you any information about the Back family.
Dr. Wilgus Back made an extensive study of the Bach's but his wife who is quite ill will not let any one have it. Someone borrowed it and she felt they took some things so she said she would not lend it again.
From your picture I would say you are a beautiful girl and I wish you success in your endeavors.
Marcus Carpenter your grandfather's brother might be able to give you some help.
If you are ever in Kentucky come see me and we can talk about the Carpenter's.
Lovingly,
Aunt Rose

Dear Jean:
I'm sorry I can't be very much help but I just never was interested in genealogy. I'm sure it is interesting when you become involved.
My mother was Polly Ann Kash and my father was Stephen Carpenter who would be your great-great grandfather. Your great grandfather was my oldest brother Alfred Cope Carpenter. My grandmother was Sally Cope Kash and my grandfather was William Kash. My grandfather Carpenter was also named William and my grandmother Carpenter was Sally. I am the last of my family living. My brothers were Alfred, Kinney, Kelly, Walker & Holbrook. The last two died in infancy. My sisters were Lilian, Sarah, Gillian and two died in infancy and I can't recall their names. My husband was Dr. Arthur Back whose father was Hiram D. Back a brother of your great great grandfather Solomon Bach. So you see we are related on both sides. I have four daughters Lillian Mae, Mary Ann, Patsy and Sarah Lee. Mae lives at home with me. The others are married and I have five grandchildren.
I hope you are able to find more information in the library.
It seems to me your father visited us once with Gordon. Didn't he go to West Point?
With love and best wishes.
Aunt Rose
"The pioneer settlers of Eastern Kentucky began to arrive from Virginia about the year 1792. Four of the oldest communities in Eastern Kentucky are Buckhorn Creek, Lost Creek, and Upper Quicksand Creek, all in Breathitt County, and the Combs Settlement, centered around a large bottom near Hazard, in Perry County.
On October 25, 1839, a baptist church building on Buckhorn Creek (a tributary of Troublesome Creek) was opened for worship by parishioners of the above mentioned three Breathitt County communities. At about the same time, a sister Baptist church was opened for parishioners at the Combs Settlement in Perry County. (Geographical notes: Upper Quicksand and Upper Buckhorn are near each other and,in laces, are separated only by a hill. The distance from the mouth of Buckhorn Creek to the Cockerell Fork of Lost Creek is only three miles by way of the Cat Holler. The Combs Settlement is several miles distant from Buckhorn and thus, the need existed for a separate church at Combs in Perry County.
[Excerpt from church minutes for the years 1839 - 1847:]
'The church met at George Allen's and, after worship, a door was opened for the reception of members. Elizabeth Howard James Howard, Sarah Carpenter, Greenville Howard, and Bertha Owens came forward and told what the Lord had done for their souls and (they) were received and baptized.' (Note from the names of these new members that they all were probably from the Uper Quicksand community.)
In April of 1845, the Buckhorn Church began holding meetings at Upper Qucisand on alternate months. This arrangement of church meetings, alternating monthly between Buckharn and Qucksand, was continued until August 1847, at which time the church met at the home of Nathan Noble on Lost Creek. (this notation of the move to Lost Creek was the last entry in the 27-page copy of Buckhorn Church minutes.)
Breathitt County is located in the eastern part of Kentucky in the heart of the coalfields. Although it is without elevations of great prominence, Breathitt County is usually referred
to as "Mountain Country." Its elevations range from 690 feet to 1530 feet above sea level. Breathitt is bordered by six counties. These go together to form Breathitt's irregular shape. The county was created in 1839, the 89th, out of parts of Clay, Perry, and Estill Counties. The county was named after John Breathitt, Governor of Kentucky from 1832 until February 21, 1834, the date of his death at the Governor's Mansion in Frankfort. The land area is 309,120 acres or 483 square miles. Jackson, located near the very center of the county on the North Fork of the Kentucky River serves as county seat - after having first being called Breathitt Town. The town's name was changed to Jackson, after Andrew Jackson, in 1845.
Note: Info from "Howards of Eastern KY" states that Stephen Carpenter was born in Floyd County in 1834. Alfred Cope Death Cert states that Stephen Carpenter was born in Jackson, Breathitt County. Marcus' letter handcopied by Mollie says Steve Carpenter b. 1829, d. 1910. (why was his will placed on record in 1905?)

Will placed on record 28 April, 1905 in Breathitt Co. naming his wife: "Polly Ann, dtr; Lindy, wife of Adam Chapman, dtr; Gilly Ann, dtr; Lillian, son; Alfred, dtr Sarah, wife of A.D. Back, and son; Kelly, dtr; Jaley, wife of James Owens, dtr; Nancy, wife of John Wireman, grandchildren, Stephen, Noah, Willy, Ella, children of dtr Matilda and Miles Barnett - now both dead, grandchildren by dtr Miranda; Luverna, Ellen, Tecumpsey, Edward, and Lacey. dtr Miranda marr to Irvine Carpenter, she now being dead, dtr Rosa J. Carpenter, who marr Arthur D. Bach."
(I haven't seen the will yet, but extra wording was added as evidenced by the fact that Rose Carpenter could not have been old enough in 1910 to be married to Arthur Bach. Also, I do not believe her name was Rosa J. Carpenter).

Problem is that Stephen P. Carpenter was born in 1852 according to the 1880 Census, not ca. 1834 as implied by the marriage book. I think Stephen P. and Stephen got mixed up here.

From Nancy Miller:
Steve had red hair and beard when young. Known then to friends and family as "Red Steve". As Steve grew older his hair and beard turned grey, he then was called "Blue Eyed Steve". One descendant stated that his eyes were a striking, bright blue.
From me: Maybe there was more than just Black Steve and White Steve. Maybe there was a Red Steve, too, and he wasn’t one of the family.

Notes for Polly Ann Kash:
Polly Ann Kash saw her brother shot down at the yard gate of the Kash farm by Old Bill Strong. The Kash farm was located on land that was granted to her grandfather, James Cope 1, by the Virginia Assembly. His grant took in all lands from the head of Meatscaffold to the mouth of Quicksand. It passed into the Kash family through the daughter of James Cope 11, Sarah, who married William Kash. They were the parents of Polly Ann. She took care of her father and mother and inherited the land. source - Copy of letter written by Marcus Carpenter retyped by Nancy Carpenter Miller. (Don't know if James Cope 11 is the right name. Seems it should be William Jackson Cope 1)

When [Steve] and [Polly Ann] separated, in their days, she owned the place and he owned the Carpenter Branch across the creek where Clemons lived and the top of the cliff where Wise lived. They swapped places so she would be on the road side, to get food and send the children to school.
Steve moved to the upper place and got Berry Howard to keep house for him. Berry and his wife separated, so Steve got Black Steve and his wife to move in with him and before he died he sold the place to Black Steve.
When [Polly Ann] died the lower place was sold at auction. Lillian and Kenny bought it. Kenny sold his part to the Chapmans. Later on Lillian sold her part to the Clemons family. As far as [Marcus] knows, now Linville Carpenter's two boys own the place."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
William Kash, who married a Miss Cope, and grandfather of Kelly Kash, of Jackson, was a son of James Kash, who emigrated from Greenbriar county, Va., with my grandfather Trimble in the fall of 1797 and located for the time being on the State road leading to the mountains, 13 miles from Mt. Sterling, at the foot of a mountain, which to this day is called Kash's Knob. He afterwards moved to and settled in the vicinity of where Hazel Green was afterwards located in Montgomery county, which then extended from the mouth of Red river to the Virginia line, the Kentucky river being the southwestern line. William Kash's mother and my grandmother Trimble were sisters, their maiden name being Lacey. All the Kash families in Kentucky who spell their names with "K" are descendants of two brothers named James and Caleb, who emigrated from Virginia in 1797 and died in the vicinity of Hazel Green.

Subject: Re: Lilah Bach and Harrison Hall

Info for Carol Francis Hall
Dear Carol,
This is an easy one. Delilah "Lilah" Bach was the daughter Primpin
Solomon Bach who lived on Meatscaffold near the mounth of Licking Fork. Her
grandparents were Solomon and Jincy Fields Bach. Jincy was a quarter
Cherokee Indian on her fathers side. The story of Jincy is covered in "The
Life and Times of Wardie and Hazel Bach Craft, Ch 1, pages 17-18, # 34.
Delilah married Harrison Hall in 1898 and they had 5 children. Their
son Alfred married Anna Brummett had 4 children. Alfred was down on his
luck and moved to Pueblo, Colorado. He asked Wardie and Hazel Craft to
take
his sons Frank and Douglas until he could get straightened out. Wardie and
Hazel raised Frank and Doug and til this day Frank and Doug are 2 of their
favorites. Frank and Doug are now retired and Frank lives close by Hazel
and
help out with Memory Hill and the
Old Redeemed Old Regular Baptist Church. Carol you need to contact Hazel
and get to know your cousins Frank and Doug. Harrison passed away on
February 14, 1909 and Lilah remarried John Stidham. Both Hazel and I knew
John Stidham well.
I haven't heard anything about Harrison being part Cherokee Indian but, if
it is true, Frank and Doug would probably know. Frank and Doug are
mentioned numerous times in "The Life and Times of Wardie and Hazel Bach
Craft." Good luck in determining your true ancestral heritage.
Your Cousin,
Tilden "Sam" Back

Marriage Notes for Solomon Bach and Jane Fields:
In 1838, the Federal Government forced most Cherokees west into what is now Oklahoma. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians trace their descendancy from about 1,000 Cherokees who managed to elude this forced removal. About 300 of these claimed US citizenship; the rest were living in Tennessee and North Carolina towns or hiding in the mountains.
Through the 1840s, federal agents searched the mountains in attempts to remove the refugees to Oklahoma. In 1848, the US Congress agreed to recognize the NC Cherokees' rights if the state recognized them as permanent residents. In 1866, the state of North Carolina formally recognized the band, and in 1889 finally granted it a state charter. In 1925, tribal lands were finally placed into federal trust to ensure that they will forever remain in Cherokee possession.
These lands include 52 tracts which total 56,688 acres scattered across five North Carolina counties (Cherokee, Graham, Jackson, Macon & Swain). Most of this land is known as the Qualla Boundary. All lands are held in common by the Tribe, with possessory holdings issued to individuals. Reservation population is 6,311, and tribal enrollment is 10,000. Towns within the boundary include Big Cove, Birdtown, Paintown, Snowbird, Wolftown and Yellowhill.
