He marries Allie McGinnis about 1907 - this based on the 1910 US Census - which indicates that she was married for 3 years and had 5 children of which 4 are alive. In 1900 she is single and living with parents.
By 1910 she has a James age 11 (likely 10?) and a Lee born about 1903. Then comes Walter born about 1908 then an unnamed son born about March 1910. The last two children fit with a 1907 marriage and the last two are likely from a previous marriage she had.
OR, she had children out of wedlock with James that caused the breakup of his first marriage?

CARPENTER--George Carpenter, 63, well known and highly respected farmer of Tate Spring, died at his residence yesterday at 1:20 o'clock after an illness of two weeks. Mr. Carpenter was a native of Hawkins county of the Mooresburg section. He removed to Grainger county about three years ago where he has since lived.Funeral services will be conducted from the home at 12:30 o'clock today after which the remains will be carried to the old home cemetery in Hawkins for interment.
Surviving the deceased are his widow and nine children, Mrs. Katie Livesy, Mooresburg, Walter Carpenter, member of the Knoxville police force, Howard and Ralph Carpenter, Mrs. Cleary Banard and Mrs. Lucy Shaver of Knoxville, Mrs. Maggie Trent, Indiana and Sam Carpenter, Tate Spring."

RUTLEDGE, Sept. 17. --Mrs. Sallie Carpenter, 80, a descendant of the Price family, among the first settlers of Hawkins County, died at 12:25 p. m. today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. B. Shaver, Fairmont Boulevard, Knoxville.Services will be at Barnard Grove Baptist Church at 2:30 p. m. Saturday. Burial in Big Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Leonard Harrell and the Rev. Charles Williams will officiate. Smith Funeral Home in charge.
The body will be removed to the home of Ralph Carpenter, Bean Station, tomorrow before services.
