SOURCE: History of Benton, Washington, Carroll, Madison, Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas. Chicago: The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889.
MARTIN CARPENTER, a farmer and stock raiser, was born in Lawrence County, Miss., February 9, 1819, and is the third and only living child in the family of four born to Solomon and Mary (Smith) Carpenter. Solomon Carpenter was born in Georgia, where he lived until about 1810, when he removed to Mississippi. He served as orderly- sergeant under Gen. Jackson in the War of 1812, at the close of which he returned to Lawrence County, Miss., and engaged in farming. In later life he removed to Copiah County, Miss., where he died in 1839. After the death of his first wife Solomon Carpenter married Nancy Hudnell, who died leaving five children, all now deceased, and Mr. Carpenter took for his third wife Mary Howell. She became the mother of two children, and still survives her husband. Martin Carpenter, who was but two years of age when his mother died, lived with his father until seventeen years of age, when he had his home with an uncle. In 1840 he immigrated to Arkansas, and located in Franklin County near where he now lives, which county has since been his home. He served one year in the Mexican War, under William G. Preston, and participated in the battle of Buena Vista. At the outbreak of the late Civil War he enlisted as a private, was made second lieutenant, and subsequently commissioned captain of his company, serving honorably and actively until the close of the struggle. In 1844 Mr. Carpenter married Martha Ann Moffatt, a native of Tennessee, and of the ten children born to them four are living, viz.: Thomas J., Patterson, Cosenia and Robert E. Mrs. Carpenter died August 14, 1885. Mr. Carpenter is a member of Clarksville Lodge No. 5, A. F. & A. M. When but twenty-three years of age he was elected justice of the peace, which office he held two years. He has 150 acres of land under cultivation, and is an enterprising citizen of the county.

NOTE:  Not in the 1860 Census as a child.  In that census, an Eliijah age 14 is there.
My guess is the name was heard wrong by the enumerator in either 1850 or 1860 and assumed what he heard. So Eliza or Elijah maybe the same person?

Temple S. Carpenter
The Early Years in Tennessee
Temple S. Carpenter, also known as T. S., was born May 20, 1822 and died March 25, 1905 near Longview Mississippi.1 2 He is buried in New Hope Cemetery, New Hope Mississippi in Oktibbeha County3. While census records are somewhat conflicting the preponderance of the evidence indicates T. S. was born in Tennessee. The first time we actually see him is in the 1850 Census in Fayette County Tennessee. There he has married Eliza (last name unknown). He is 28 and Eliza is 22.4 They have two children, Caroline (shown as Carolina) who was born in 1847 and Thomas B. who was born in 1849.
We cannot determine if T. S. actually originated somewhere else in Tennessee and was just in Fayette County plying his carpenter’s trade in 1850 or if he actually originated there. Further, there is a distinct possibility that what the census is calling Fayette County Tennessee may actually have been closer to Fayetteville Tennessee.
Several things mitigate for Fayette County. First, there was a large boom going on in and around Fayette County, sure to draw many tradesmen. During the antebellum years LaGrange Tennessee boasted more millionaires than any other city in America. The Antebellum homes in LaGrange alone would have been an attraction for a carpenter. Second, Fayette County Tennessee is joined at the hip to Tippah County Mississippi.
Even today there are many places in that area you cannot tell which state or county you are in. If it turns out that T. S. is related to the Carpenters from Tippah County that could also explain his presence.
On the other hand, Fayetteville Tennessee s not far from Bedford County where T. S. appears in the 1860 Census, still married to Eliza but now having added Sarah born in 1852,  James born in 1854, Riley born in 1856, and Charley born in 1859.5
Solomon Carpenter is one of the most likely candidates to be T. S. Carpenter’s father. Solomon was born in Montgomery County North Carolina in 1770.6 Solomon was married to a Sarah whose last name is unknown, about 1810. They had a daughter named Sarah Carpenter who was born in 1816. Sarah was T. S. Carpenter’s older sister. She married William Prince prior to 1838.7 In addition to Sarah, T. S. may have had another older sister Elizabeth who was born in 1814 and several half-brothers including John White Carpenter born around 1807, William Carpenter birth date unknown, Daniel Carpenter birth date unknown, and Moses Carpenter birth date unknown.
The War of Northern Aggression
T. S. was 39 years old when he joined the Confederate Army and he and first wife Eliza had 8 children when he enlisted in the 17th Battalion from his home in Bedford County Tennessee. After the war he divorced and relocated to Oktibbeha County Mississippi where he married 19 year old Mary Francis Kendrick. His second wife applied for his pension in 1905 listing his unit as the 17th Mississippi. This may have been an error or there may be a historical connection between the 17th Tennessee and the 17th Mississippi. T. S. actually served in Company A, 17th Battalion Tennessee Infantry and Company C, 23rd Battalion Tennessee Infantry.
The 17th Tennessee Infantry Muster Rolls indicate T. S. first enlisted for a period of 1 year on May 16, 1861 in Alisona Tennessee.8 Notes on the official records say that the Regiment was actually organized for State Service on June 11, 1861 and transferred to the service of the Confederate States on August 15 1861. The Regiment was at Big Creek in Campbell County Tennessee for initial organization but moved to Mill Springs Kentucky in August 1861. Through the early fall of 1861 the Regiment moved down to Cumberland Gap where it established a base at Camp Buckner which was actually on the Cumberland Ford about 5 miles from the actual Gap. Using this base Camp the Regiment guarded the pass through the mountains and approaches into Eastern Tennessee from the north by patrolling and maintaining an armed presence.9
“In pursuance of General orders the Seventeenth Regiment of Tenn Vols left Camp at Big Creek and Wilson's Gap on the 9th and 10th September and started for Cumberland Gap Tenn. Arrived said place on the 11th and 12th inst. and remained until the morning of the 14th inst. where we again had struck tents and at ½ past two oclock AM. took up the line of march for Camp Buckner near Cumberland Ford, Renox County KY. and arrived at said place without accident on the same day since which time the Regiment except a detachment it sent to Barbourville has remained stationed at said place. The health of the regiment is far from being good but the troops able for duty are making rapid proficiency in drill notwithstanding they have not regularly exercised and all seem to be in excellent spirits.
Signed: J. L. Norris”10
On October 21, 1861 while marching north into Rockcastle County Kentucky the Regiment met a strong Federal Force. The ensuing battle is known as the Battle of Mill Springs. The regiment was under the command of Brigadier General Felix K. Zollicoffer during the Battle at Rockcastle, Kentucky (also known as Camp Wildcat). Regimental returns indicate the 17th moved to Jacksboro Tennessee in November and December 1861, but continued to conduct forays, or demonstrations (marches to us) into Kentucky.
On January 20, 1862 the regiment was engaged in action at Fishing Creek near Mill Springs, Kentucky. In this battle the regiment suffered 46 casualties and Brigadier General Zollicoffer was killed. The 17th Regiment left Eastern Tennessee in late January 1862 and moved to Tuscumbia Alabama and then on to Tupelo Mississippi, arriving there in time to meet the Confederate withdrawal from Corinth. Apparently the 17th had been  sent to Mississippi to participate in the Battle of Shiloh but had not quite arrived in time. After that Battle, the Federal Forces amassed an overwhelming strength against the Confederates who had withdrawn to Corinth causing them to withdraw further into Mississippi to Tupelo. This is where the 17th joined the rest of the Army in May 1862. The Company Muster Rolls show T. S. was discharged on July 3, 1862, prior to the 17th Regiment movement to Tullahoma Tennessee.11
“In obedience to General orders the Regiment marched from Cumberland Ford Ky. on the 3rd  day of October into Harbin County, distance about 25 miles, but finding no enemy in force returned to Cumberland Ford. On the 16th instant in obedience to orders we again struck our tents and took up the line of march westward. On the 21st instant (Tenn) at Rockcastle Heights, found the enemy strongly posted (Tenn) and engaged them. Distance marched in reaching said Heights 60 miles. In the action the Regiment lost 45 in killed and wounded. After the action the Brigade fell back one and a half miles and camped for the night and on the morning of the 22nd Commenced the march for Cumberland Ford which we reached without accident on the 25th inst. On the 30th inst. the Regiment was ordered to move from Cumberland Ford to Cumberland Gap (distance 14 miles) reaching said place on the evening of the 31st. The health of the Regiment is far from good, almost 25 percent of the command being reported on the sick list.
Signed J. L. Norris”12
T. S. Carpenter joined Company C, 23rd Battalion Tennessee Infantry on October 20, 1862. His place of enlistment is recorded as Tompsons Creek, Bedford County, Tennessee. He was enrolled by Captain Thomas J. Stanfield for a period of 3 years. The company was originally known as Captain Thomas J. Stanfield’s Company, Newman’s Tennessee Infantry Battalion. Newman’s Battalion was actually organized in November 1862 with five companies, A to E. Companies A and H had originally served as Companies E and F, 9th Kentucky Mounted Rifle Regiment. The 23rd Infantry Battalion was organized at camp near Murfreesboro, Tennessee.13 Its
members were raised in Lincoln, Hardin, Bedford, and Franklin counties. T. S. Carpenter resigned his commission on May 23, 1863 and was apparently discharged from the Army as of that date.
T. S. Carpenter filed for a pension from the State of Mississippi on July 28, 1900. In his pension application he states he was wounded at Murfreesboro and resigned because of the wounds the following May. That is corroborated by the letter of resignation in his official files. That letter is dated May 21, 1863. It is addressed to Genl S. Cooper, the Adjutant and Inspector General of the Confederate States Army. It does not state overtly that the resignation was the result of wounds but does indicate that he had been reviewed by a board of examination formed by his Brigade Commander, General Brown. A translation of that letter is provided here.
Headquarters Newman's Battalion, Brown's Brigade Fairfield Tennessee May 21st, 1863
To S Cooper Adjutant and Inspector General Richmond. Va. Sir, I hereby tender my resignation as 2d Lieutenant Company (C) Newman's Battalion with all  actions and immediate effectiveness.
My statement follows:
I did not file a report in my case before an examin- ing board to the war Department as it had been  ordered Genl Brown (my Brigade Commander) to appear before the board of examiners for his brigade for examination. I must respectfully ask that my  resignation be accepted.
I am not indebted to the Confederate States Government any money or services neither for any property or interest in any responsible _ing to the Public.
Respectfully Submitted T S Carpenter 2d Lieutenant Company (C) Newman's Battalion14
T. S. Carpenter’s great grandson recalls being told that when he rejoined after his initial enlistment expired, he was involved in buying horses for the Confederacy and driving them back to the eastern theater of war. This information was found in Tullahoma Tennessee, Tullahoma is the place prisoners were sent from northern prison camps after being exchanged. In May 1863 there was a large influx of Texans from prison camps in Illinois and Ohio to the Tullahoma Camp. Some of the Texas Cavalry Units were remounted. This could very well have been the group of prisoners William M. Stults and Thomas J. Lucas were in. If so, there were apparently not enough resources to remount all the Texas Cavalry. Several Texas Regiments remained dismounted.15 Table 1 summarizes T. S. Carpenter’s Service Record.

Home from the War
As the war ended and the soldiers returned to their homes, the reconstruction began. While there was relative peace through 1867, hostilities broke out in a full scale insurgency in many areas. Bedford County Tennessee was adjacent to Pulaski Tennessee, the center of insurgent organization in the former Western Theater of War.
Temple went home as did many others and he even managed to have another child with Eliza. This daughter was named Eliza and was born in 1864.16 In the 1870 Census he appears at his home in Bedford County, District 24 with Eliza and the children. It is curious in this census that his name is given as Thomas Carpenter. The ages are still the same and track with the previous census for this to be T. S. However, we really don’t know for sure if T. S. ever even came home from the war. It would not have been a stretch for one of the family members to state to the census takers that he was there when he was actually gone.
On to Mississippi
T. S. next shows up as marrying Mary Francis (Mollie) Kendricks on December 14, 1871. This is reported in the Pension Applications filed in 1900 and 1905 by T. S. and Mary Francis17. In fact, T. S. could have left Tennessee at any point after the baby Eliza was conceived, presuming he was even her father. His departure is the big mystery of the family. Some of the children from the second family, his and Mary Francis’ children were aware of the “other family” in Tennessee. T. S. Grandson, T. S. born in 1903 told his own son T. S. born in 1933 about the “half brothers.” That information led to our finding the trail of Thomas B. Carpenter, T. S.’ oldest son in Tennessee. According to T. S. born in 1933 Thomas went into the oil business and moved to Kansas. Thomas and his son Thomas both appeared in and around Ottawa Oklahoma, Galena Kansas, and Neosho Missouri between 1900 and 1930.18 We have documented the death of Thomas B. Carpenter Jr. in Neosho Missouri in 1966. He is buried in the IOOF Cemetery next to his wife Prudence.19 It seems that the Tennessee Family had no idea of what happened to T. S. Carpenter after he left Bedford County. T. S. died March 25, 1905 in Oktibbeha County Mississippi and was buried at the New Hope Cemetery near Longview Mississippi.20 Mary Francis died September 16, 1911 and is buried beside T. S. at New Hope.21
The Mississippi Family
In Mississippi T. S. and Mary Francis have sons William Wilburn born March 1875, Edd Worley born November 1879, a daughter Alice born in July 1879, Robert L. born in 1882, and Grover C. born in November 1884.
NOTE:  The narrative continues with each child cited.  Many Thanks to William R. Price!

Page 20 - Sarah (Sallie) E. Carpenter
Sallie (Sarah) Carpenter was born in Tennessee in 1852. She appears on the 1860 and 1870 Census. We are currently unable to locate any further information on her. However, there is a marriage record in Bedford County reflecting an S. E. Carpenter marrying N. G. Ray November 2, 1872 in Bedford County.44 This couple would appear to be a perfect fit. The Acncestry.Com Census search indicates they resided in District 18 of Bedford County but the Census Form itself indicates they were in fact in District 24. The 1878 Beers map shows three Ray families living within a couple of miles of Tom Carpenter’s home, originally T. S. Carpenter’s home.45 Sallie’s husband was named Nearby Ray according to the 1880 Census. The couple had 8 children beginning with son Lafayette in 1874 followed by daughters Idella in 1876, Dosia in 1877, and a son named John in 1880.46 Between 1880 and 1894 their children included Ethel born in 1882, Edd born in 1888, Stella born in 1891 and Tina B. born in 1894. In the 1900 Census, all of the last four children were at home with Sarah in Bedford County Tennessee. However, she is listed as a widow indicating that Nearby Ray died sometime after 1894 but before 1910.47  In the 1900 Census we have not yet found this family. There is a 13 year old Ethel living as a boarder in Shelbyville and a 57 year old Sarah E. Ray living with a Henry and Dosia Shelby in Weakley County Tennessee. While the age is wrong, Dosia was surely a daughter and the age is right for her as well as the birth places. What this indicates is that there was probably a massive trauma to the family surrounding Nearby’s death, splitting it asunder from the time it happened until the family was reunited in 1910. Sarah’s obituary appears on October 22nd, 1936 in the Shelbyville Gazette.48

Riley Carpenter was born in Tennessee in 1858. He appears in the 186049, 187050, and 1880 Census. In 1880 he is reported as a 22 year old boarder in Warren County Tennessee. Riley’s occupation in 1880 is listed as railroad foreman.51 On January 12, 1888 Thomas B. Carpenter appeared at the Bedford County Tennessee Court House to issue a letter as the administrator of R. M. Carpenter’s estate.52 We presume this is Riley because he is the only one we have who has the initial R. in his name. If it isn’t Riley, then the bond letter may be another clue to T. S. Carpenter’s ancestry

Page 21 & 22 - Jeff Carpenter Appears on the 1870 Census as a son of T. S., born in 1860. However, in the 1880 census there is a Jeff Prince who is the same age listed as a boarder. At this point we cannot really be sure that T. S. even had a son named Jeff. On the other hand many Families of Prince lineage lived nearby and it is possible that Jeff was a cousin, nephew, or even an indenture. This might also be a clue to T. S. Carpenter’s ancestors as some researchers attribute a Sarah Carpenter who could have been T. S. Carpenter’s sister as marrying a man named Prince around the same time frame T. S. would have married Eliza. According to some researchers that information is not completely documented. For now we will have to wait to see if DNA testing will provide a basis to explore this possibility further.

Edward Worley Carpenter Edward Worley, also known as Edd and Uncle Edd, was born September 25, 1877 in Oktibbeha County. Edd is sometimes said to have been retarded and at other times described as being a little “slow”. In the same breath those who describe him will point out he was probably the hardest working man they ever knew. For a while after T. S. died Edd lived with his mother Mary Francis and younger brother Grover Cleveland Carpenter near his brother and sister in Longview. The 1910 Census shows Edd as the head of the household with Mary Francis and Grover living there.27 Edd went to live with Willie Wilburn and his family after his mother’s death and younger brother’s departure to Texas. Edd continued to live in Mississippi until the late 1950’s.  He went to Virginia to live with his sister Alice in Virginia. One of Alice’s daughters had married a man who was in the Navy. According to JW Edmonds, Ed’s nephew, he died in Glen Allen Virginia on February 21, 1963. He is buried in West Point Cemetery near Richmond Virginia.28

NOTE:
There is a West Point Cemetery, also known as Potter's Field and Calvary Cemetery, which is a historic cemetery and national historic district located at Norfolk, Virginia. It is some 92 miles from Richmond, VA.
I can not find a West Point Cemetery in or near Richmond. I did find a Sunny Slope Cemetery in West Point, King William County, VA and a Find a Grave memorial for him there.

This is a descendant narrative for Temple S. Carpenter (1822 -1905)
Page 11. Robert L. Carpenter
Robert L. Carpenter was born November 8, 1881 in Oktibbeha County. The 1900 Census shows him as being born in 1882;30 however the Temple Simpson Jr. Bible gives the November 8, 1881 birth date. Robert died in a tragedy on September 10, 1904. The family story goes that anytime a day is grey and overcast, it reminded the old people of the day Robert died.. I do not have much information beyond that for now.
