Subject: Re: T.S. Carpenter
I have found the handwritten note of my grandmother and the letters of my great-grandmother among my mother's papers. The note of my grandmother (Stella Jane Ray) is original in ink and in her handwriting, but the letters of my great-grandmother (Sarah E. Carpenter Ray) are xerox copies of her own letters in her handwriting (I do not know who has the originals, but they must have been in my grandmother's possession). Possibly one of my cousins got them when she passed away. Anyway, the sole reference to a "grandfather Riley Carpenter" who married a Miss Stewart is in my grandmother's handwritten note, but the letters written by Sarah Carpenter Ray consistently refer to her own grandfather as Solomon Carpenter and her father as Temple Carpenter. These letters were written in 1932-33. One of these letters states that Solomon was born and raised in Scotland, and "when old enough to take care of his self" came to New York with 5 other boys, and then "he and Jason Muse" went to Tennessee and the others went somewhere else. The letter also states that Solomon married and raised three girls (Mary, Betsy and Sallie) and 4 boys (John, George, Temple and William), and that the youngest son, William, when "old enough to take care of his self" left home and was never heard from again and "they thought he might have gone to Scotland to his Father's People". One of my mother's notes states that Sarah E. Carpenter is buried in the cemetery at Thompson Creek next to Amos and a child who died in infancy. I have a picture of Amos Gore's and Sarah's gravestones at Bomar Cemetery, but was not aware of the unnamed infant child. My parents took photos at Bomar Cemetery. If I find them, I'll look for evidence of the infant's grave.
Sarah Carpenter Ray's letters are the best evidence we have that Temple's father was Solomon. My grandmother (Stella Jane Ray) would not have known her great-grandfather Solomon, as he most likely died well before she was born in 1890. Her own grandfather (Temple) died in 1905 when she was only 15. So her note (based on her memory alone) is less credible than Sarah's own letters, and in any event my grandmother's grandfather who married a "Miss Stewart" would have been Temple, not Solomon. I think her reference to a grandfather Riley is simply an error, based on confusion (her note was probably written during the 1970s when she was well into her 80s at my mother's request, when my mother started trying to track the Carpenters). Sarah Carpenter's letters stating that Solomon went to Tennessee is consistent with my Aunt Ethel's statement to my mother that Temple Carpenter lived at Thompson Creek, Bedford County, Tennessee in the 1850s.
Hope this is helpful,
Frank

1671. Thomas Benton Carpenter

NAME:
Middle initial B. is for Bedford and not Benson per W Franklin Reed < franklin.reed@comcast.net >
William Price < wrprice@verizon.net > writes:
I talked to Thomas B. Pinson, son of Alma Carpenter and Wallace J. Pinson. He was in a nursing home and very bitter. The conversation was brief but he was the one that made the claim that his grandfather’s name was Thomas Benson. He was emphatic about that but I have honestly taken no action I know of to promote or deny it. Just a recollection from a conversation I had with him over the phone. ...
His son, Thomas B. Carpenter, Jr. - per his WWII Draft record has Benton as a middle name.
Thus the assumption that Jr. and his father had the same middle name. JRC

This is a descendant narrative for Temple S. Carpenter (1822 -1905)
Page 14 to 20. Plus several images - Thomas B. Carpenter
Thomas B. Carpenter was born in April of 1849 in Tennessee. He is the oldest son of Temple S. Carpenter. In 1878 Thomas married Cora Shoffner, daughter of Mike and Sopherina Shoffner of Bedford County. Cora was born in November 1859 in Alabama and died in 1908 in Galena Kansas of heart failure.36 Thomas and Cora had three children including Alma who was born in Tennessee during April 1880, Mabel who was born in Tennessee during June 1883, and Thomas B. Jr. who was born in Tennessee on July 8, 1890.37 By the 1920 Census Thomas B. Carpenter is a widower living alone in Quapaw, Ottawa County Oklahoma at age 70. He is a night watchman. Thomas was injured in an accident at the mines on September 9, 1926. He was struck by a car and lingered in the Hospital at Picher Oklahoma where he died  in September 1926. The Obituary below indicates he died on September the 10th.38
Thomas’ daughter Alma appears in a school roster as a teacher in the early 1900’s in Galena Kansas. Alma married Wallace J. Pinson and the couple moved to the Tulsa Oklahoma area. Descendents of Wallace and Alma are still living in the Miami Oklahoma area. A grandson indicates the B was for Benson. Mabel married Chearles E. Caverline and moved to Long Beach California where she died at a young age in1931. She is buried in Galena next to her mother and father. The couple had no known [children.]
Thomas B. Jr. First married Edith and they adopted a daughter Alta Maurine Carpenter. After a turbulent marriage they were divorced and Thomas Jr married Prudence M. Wills in Neosho Missouri in 1923. The couple lived in Arkansas for many years and returned to Neosho in 1947. He died in 1966 and she died in 1968 and they are both buried at the IOOF Cemetery in Neosho. 42
Alta Maurine.was still alive in 2008 and has living descendents in North and Central Texas.

WIKIPEDIA:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picher,_Oklahoma
Picher is a ghost town and former city in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, United States. This was a major national center of lead and zinc mining at the heart of the Tri-State Mining District.
... Eventually the EPA and the state of Oklahoma agreed to a mandatory evacuation and buyout of the entire township. The similarly contaminated satellite towns of Treece, Kansas and Cardin, Oklahoma were included in the Tar Creek Superfund site.
A 2006 Army Corps of Engineers study showed 86% of Picher's buildings (including the town school) were badly undermined and subject to collapse at any time.[5] The destruction of 150 homes by an EF4 tornado in May 2008 accelerated the exodus.[6] On September 1, 2009, the state of Oklahoma officially dis-incorporated the city of Picher, which ceased official operations on that day. The population plummeted from 1,640 at the 2000 census to 20 at the 2010 census. As of January 2011, only six homes and one business remain, their owners having refused to leave at any price.
... Picher is among a small number of locations in the world (such as Gilman, Colorado; Centralia, Pennsylvania; and Wittenoom, Western Australia) to be evacuated and declared uninhabitable due to environmental and health damage caused by the mines the town once serviced.
