Group 7 - Descendants of the Speculative Anthony Carpenter-122905 of Virginia and places westward

Notes

2055. Franklin Cecil "Frank" Carpenter

NOTE:
He is not the Francis Carpenter-188394 of Richland County, WI - That is a Group 2 line.

BIRTH:
25 May 1873 per WWI Draft record. See related email below & 3 draft levels.
About 1874 per 1880 and 1920 US Census - indicated 1873 as likely birth year.
??  May 1874 per 1900 US Census.
About 1872 per 1910 US Census
About 1870 per 1940 US Census
25 May 1860 per FaG record, but the headstone has 1870!
Headstone looks like the style from the 1970s indicating this is a replacement stone.
Death Certificate has death last birthday as age 79, 2 months and 22 days.  This is 25 May 1870.
COMMENT:
Three (3) of the eight (8) above indicate 1873. Please notice that he started getting older after 1920! But, the parents did not marry until 16 Feb 1872.  The first child was likely born after say Dec 1872.  So the 25 May 1873 is rather reasonable.  He should have been age 76 at last birthday when he died.
The 1930 US Census – not found yet.
The 1875 WI State Census has only 2 males and one female listed with no ages or names other than Thos (Thomas) the head of house listed. One child is consistent with a 1872 marriage.

CENSUS: 1870 US Census - Not with father or mother. Likely not born yet!
CENSUS: 1875 Wisconsin State Census - with parents - but not named or birth estimate.
CENSUS: 1880 US Census - with parents
CENSUS: 1890 US Census - burned

CENSUS: 1900 US Census - with maternal grandmother

Subject: Another Dead End
Hello John-
I received my great grandpa Frank C's death certificate, hoping it would more family information.
The birthplace and the parental names are blank; the informant was Walter (WL Carpenter. Frank DID pass in 1949 (remember there was a question about the headstones) and it shows that he was widowed, so Sildia passed before him.
Do you think there may be records in newspapers? If so I will subscribe to the database for that.
BTW this shows his DOB as May 25 (that part is consistent in all records) 1870 (not consistent in records).
It is noted that he worked as a farmer and 'rail road' so I am wondering if there may be information in RR records?
The death certificate also says he was never in the armed forces- I'm wondering if he signed up but never got called?
Also, do you think it's possible that the funeral home that is in Oilton may have record of which church that they attended? I assume church records may be extremely reliable for birth, death, and possibly family history. Maybe there will be a record of where he was between 1869/70 and 1901 when Floyd was born. It appears all his kids were born in Oklahoma.
And what about social security? May there be a way to follow info through that avenue? I"ve not used those records for his search.
I'll investigate if you think it's worth while. Alana

Subject: RE: Frank Carpenter 188362
Good morning John.
My Washington representative’s side called me back. This is another bust as far as leads, but he gave me good information.
1. SAA cannot find a death record for Frank or anyone with a death date that matches his.
Railroad Retirement System cannot find him because they need a SSN.
However, the mystery may be solved about part of the year birthdate. Apparently there were three rails for the draft. The first one was for the youngest people. The second was for anyone 21 on a certain date. The third call for men had to be for people who were 45 years or younger on September 12, 1918. By giving May 25, 1873, Frank would have qualified. So apparently he and many other older Americans falsified this document. I believe this eliminates 1873 as a birth year, and I think it clarifies hoe this year got reported.
I did find out that many selective service records are held in the Minnesota historical society. You probably knew that information. If you want their contact number I will be happy to share.
The search continues!
Alana

Seidleday Jane "Silda" Chaney

NAME:
Best guess is Gelda. But, Silldia, Sirilda Griselda and Gildia found as name variants.
But ... on his WWI Draft card it reports her name as "Seidleday".
Then ... on FaG they have Syldia J. "Silda" with Silda J. on the headstone.

The WWI Draft for Frank has her most accurate version for which Frank signed off on. And that is Seidleday. The nickname or short version is Silda.
Using those versions, my guess is her name is based on a German name. And misspelled. Seidle probably should be spelt Siedle. (Seed-el) --- Day in German should be tag.
So my guess is that her name was supposed to be or sound like Siedletag.
Siedle means settles. Siedle tag means settle meet. Tag actually means day but the older version can also mean meet. Remember Siedle is pronounced Seed-el.  FYI - Siedler means colonist.
The female name Silda, Sillda, Sildah, and Selada is a matronly Germanic female name.
Selada = pronounced See la da or See la dai.
So, working with the above, I like the Selada pronounced in German as Zee la dai which may have been pronounced in English Seed el day.
Sometimes playing it one way then another then back and forth with pronouncing it in German and English helps. Whether Selada is right or not is the question!
