Death: 21 Aug 1933 (aged 85)
Burial: Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Phoenix, Yazoo County, Mississippi, USA
Memorial #: 37587262
Bio:
Abraham Thomas Dilley January 17, 1848 - August 25, 1933

Abraham Thomas Dilley (January 17, 1848-August 25, 1933) was the eighth child of Samuel and Lemenda Dilley and was born in the Phoenix community of Yazoo County, Mississippi.

Union soldiers looking for Confederate men came to Cedar Grove in 1862 hoping to capture any men that might be old enough to serve in the war. They searched throughout the house and thrust their bayonets through all the mattresses. Tom Dilley, age 14, had been hidden in a canebrake behind the house.

In 1864 Tom joined at 16 the Jones Cavalry, a Mississippi state unit. He became the fifth Samuel Dilley son joining the Confederate cause. He was involved in a couple of skirmishes in the local area and was with his unit when they surrendered at Jackson on May 15, 1965.

After the war he married Cassandra Stirling Carpenter and had eight children. He was known as "Uncle Tommy"and was a respected member of the Phoenix Community.

John William Carpenter (August 31, 1881 - June 16, 1959) was an American businessman and agriculturist.

Early life
Carpenter was born to Thomas Wirt Carpenter and Ellen Isaphene Dickson in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas. He was raised on the family's farm, which had been established after the Civil War. After his father's death, he took over the farm, becoming the head-of-household at the early age of 19. He took a job with Corsicana Gas and Electric Company in 1900 to supplement the income of the farm digging trenches and holes for electric and gas lines. He married Flossie Belle Gardner on June 18, 1913. Together, they had three children: Ellen Carolyn, Benjamin Howard, and John William, Jr.

His son "Johnny" was killed in an automobile accident when he was a freshman at the University of Texas in 1934. His son's best friend, and cousin was Walter Allen (Al) Dealey, Jr. who had lost his father in the previous 12 months. He went to Al and said, "you've lost a father" and "I have lost a son". Let's be "father and son" to each other, and gave him a ring in remembrance of that "replacement commitment" to each other.[citation needed]

Business years
Seven years after starting work, he climbed to the position of president and general manager of Corsicana Gas and Electric Company. He held the same title for Corsicana Transit Company and the Athens Power and Light Company. He moved to Dallas in 1918 and served as president and general manager of Dallas Power and Light Company. In 1919, he went on to become vice-president and general manager of Texas Power and Light Company; he served as president of the same company from 1927 to 1949. He retired in 1953 as the chairman of the executive committee and director.

Carpenter organized the Texas Security Life Insurance Company in 1930. The company became Southland Life Insurance Company through a series of mergers and acquisitions in 1945, making it the fifteenth largest publicly owned company in the United States in 1959.

He was the founder and first president of Lone Star Steel Company in 1942.

Contributions to Texas development
Carpenter operated the largest family of dairy farms in North Texas, which played an important factor in the success of the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936 and the success of the State Fair of Texas. He served as president of Trinity Valley Cattle Company from 1940 to 1946.

Along with Amon Carter, his friend from Fort Worth, he planted around two million pine seedlings on his farms, and upheld the support for the Trinity River, despite constant floods and droughts that had been common in the past. Carpenter served on the Trinity River Development Committee of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce and president of the Trinity Improvement Association from its beginnings in 1928. He was a major supporter in the introduction of legislation that formed the Trinity River Authority. He also served as member of the committee that introduced Texas's first national park, Big Bend National Park, and later director of the Big Bend National Park Association and the Big Bend Trail Association.

Education
Carpenter was one of the founders of the Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) in Lubbock, Texas and a member of the Board of Directors of Texas Technological College.[1] Carpenter was also a member of the board of trustees for Baylor College (now Baylor University). He also served on the Bureau of Business Research for the University of Texas at Austin.

He held a commission as Major in the U.S. Army Officers Reserve Corps and received an honorary LL.D. from Texas Tech University and a D.Eng. from Southern Methodist University.

Death
Carpenter died on the afternoon of June 16, 1959, from a heart attack.

Portions of State Highway 114 and State Highway 183 are named in his honor (John W. Carpenter Freeway).

Ben H. Carpenter
Founder, Las Colinas
1924 - 2006

We commemorate the life of Ben H. Carpenter, who passed away on March 3, 2006. His legacy, Las Colinas, is a tribute to the rare combination of traits that he possessed. A true pioneer, keen business judgment and an abiding love of the land fueled his commitment to build a development of unprecedented caliber. To this day, the name "Las Colinas" evokes distinct images: a place families are proud to call home; a hub where commerce flourishes. Mr. Carpenter cultivated a unique kinship between skyscrapers and neighborhoods, land and architecture, aesthetics and function to create what is, in every sense of the word, a community.

In 1973, Mr. Carpenter unveiled the master plan for transforming his family's ranch, fondly named El Ranchito de las Colinas, meaning the Little Ranch of the Hills. He envisioned a world-class development emerging from the black bottom land set in a flood plain of the Trinity River. The skeptics were many in number, and indeed obstacles did arise; yet, Carpenter remained undeterred, forging ahead with ingenuity and innovation. We are forever grateful to him because he breathed life into the land, and more than 30 years later, Las Colinas serves as a testament to this visionary's foresight. His tenacious spirit propelled a long-held dream into a reality that touches our lives daily. All too often, we take our community for granted and we forget that this labor of love not only provides an enviable quality of life, but also imparts the character of an extraordinary man.

Perhaps you never met Ben Carpenter, but if you have ever glimpsed Las Colinas, you have experienced him. His imprints are everywhere. Carpenter was a man whose standards were uncompromising, and he had a deep appreciation for beauty, quality and cohesion. Once you enter Las Colinas, it is as if you've crossed an invisible line that delineates new territory. The surroundings speak for themselves. Buildings and homes are unique in character, yet harmonious with the environment and each other. The same level of quality is pursued in all common areas, medians and parks. Carpenter was also inspired by art and culture that spanned the globe, and he was a master at infusing exotic elements into the native landscape of Texas. The influence of his travels is reflected throughout the community. The idea behind the Mustangs of Las Colinas originated from Johannesburg, South Africa. The Flower Clock and canals are replications of what he encountered in Italy. Even the most enduring, distinguishing element of Las Colinas, the protection offered by deed restrictions, is an adaptation from a city he visited in the heart of Brazil's rainforest.

Las Colinas, with its humble beginnings as a cattle ranch, has grown exponentially in size with an ever-increasing base of commercial and residential development. It is internationally recognized as a model for master-planned communities. Dignitaries from around the world still visit, hoping to capture the essence of what is Ben Carpenter's greatest legacy.

We live, we work and we play in a place like no other, and our lives are enriched because of it. Ben H. Carpenter, the man, will be missed, but his life will always be celebrated in these hills called Las Colinas.

In November 2007, after nearly two years of planning and the efforts of countless volunteers, architects, and sculptor Robert Glen, the Ben H. Carpenter Monument was erected overlooking Las Colinas. It is located in Founders Park, at the intersection of John W. Carpenter Freeway and Riverside Drive.
