Pearl Clinton Carpenter
Birth: Sep. 14, 1897
Pettigrew
Madison County
Arkansas, USA
Death: Mar. 27, 1958
Broken Arrow
Tulsa County
Oklahoma, USA

Pearl was born to John Bruton Carpenter and Samantha Ellen Short in Pettigrew, Madison County, Arkansas. He was one of 10 children. He and his older brothers worked as farm laborers with his father.

The family made the move by wagon to Oklahoma about 1910. They settled in Broken Arrow where he worked as a blacksmith in his father's shop next to the Katy Railway on South Main. By 1920 he was working, along with his brothers, in the oil fields. He was a tool dresser until the machinery he was working on blew up in his face and put out his left eye.

He married Susie Rebecca Campbell on September 16, 1923, in Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma. He supported his family by working an oil lease, share-cropping, and farming. He and Susie raised two children this way.

The Carpenter family moved to Silverton, Oregon, about 1943, to work in the shipyards for the war effort during WWII. Susie and June were certified welders, and Pearl and Don were lay-out men. They moved back to Oklahoma in 1946 with an additional family member, the granddaughter that they would raise to adulthood.

Pearl spent the remainder of his life fighting illness. He spent three years in Tallahany at the TB Sanitarium, and battled cancer on his return home. He spent his time raising gardens that Susie would can, and being the perfect grandfather/father for a young granddaughter. He died at home with his wife, daughter, and granddaughter.

Pearl was preceded in death by his parents, John Bruton and Samantha Ellen Short Carpenter; two sisters, Lucy Emma and May Matilda; and one brother, James Morgan, all who died in childhood. He is survived by his wife, Susie and granddaughter Cheryl Lee Fischl, of the home; a daughter, June Elizabeth Raney, of Broken Arrow; a son, Donald Carpenter, of Tulsa; and granddaughter LaDonna Sue Carpenter of Tulsa. Four brothers; Dave, Claude and Henry of Broken Arrow, and Tommy of Woodland, California. Two sisters; Alice McFee of Bell, California, and Ola Whitaker, of Bethalto, Illinois. He will be laid to rest in Vernon Cemetery, Coweta, Oklahoma.

*There has been discussion about Pearl's middle name. He signed his draft card and social security card as Clint. I've been told it's Clinton in the family bible, but haven't seen it with my own eyes. As his brothers have the full names of past presidents, I'm assuming that it's supposed to be Clinton. Cheryl Moore, granddaughter.

Susie Rebecca Campbell Carpenter

Missouri, USA
Death: Jun. 7, 1989
Coweta
Wagoner County
Oklahoma, USA
Susie Rebecca Campbell was born to Napoleon Bonaparte Campbell and Martha Delpha Hadley in Wentworth Village, Newton County, Missouri. She was one of six children that made the move to Oklahoma in 1903 by covered wagon, where her parents settled in Wagoner County. A younger sister was added to the family after the move.

As a young woman, Susie lived with her oldest brother, El, and his wife in Minnesota for a time, working in the shop that they ran. She also waitressed for a time.

She married Pearl Clinton Carpenter on September 16, 1923, in Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma. They raised two children and one granddaughter in the thirty-five years they spent together before his death from cancer in 1958.

Pearl worked an oil lease and share-cropped to make a living for his young family, and Susie worked along side of him. She told of meeting Pretty Boy Floyd while they lived in the country, and sending out food for him and the boys riding with him.

The Carpenter family made the move to Silverton, Oregon, about 1943 to work in the shipyards for the war effort during WWII. Susie and June were certified welders, and Pearl and Don were lay-out men at Swan Island Shipyard for the Kaiser Company. They moved back to Oklahoma in 1946 with an additional family member, the granddaughter that they eventually raised to adulthood.

Susie eventually became the main bread-winner for the family, as Pearl suffered from cancer for an extended period of time. She worked for a time at Young's Laundry on Main Street in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. After that she crocheted and sold her work until after Pearl's death, when she began to sew for the public. She also worked as a paid nanny for three of her daughter's mother-in-laws grandchildren, who lived with her for six years.

In 1964 she met Oliver Albert Rogers, a widower, through mutual friends. They married on January 5, 1965, and were constantly together until his death in 1982. After Oliver's death she lived for a time with her son, Donald, and then with her daughter, June, until she needed the care that was provided by the Coweta Manor Nursing Home in Coweta, Oklahoma, where she resided until her death, 10 days before her 89th birthday.

Susie was a long time member of Chapter 256 of the Rebecca/Oddfellow Lodge in Broken Arrow, a member of the Northside Freewill Baptist Church, and of the Chow and Chatter Club for over 50's.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; Pearl Clinton Carpenter and Oliver Albert Rogers, both of Broken Arrow; and three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by a daughter, June Elizabeth Carpenter Raney of Coweta; a son, Donald Carpenter of Tulsa; two granddaughters, Cheryl Lee Fischl Moore of Broken Arrow, and LaDonna Sue Carpenter Martinez of Houston, Texas. One great-granddaughter and four great-grandsons. She will be laid to rest beside her soul-mate, Pearl, in the Campbell Family Plot in Vernon Cemetery, Coweta, Oklahoma.

June was born to Pearl Clinton Carpenter and Susie Rebecca Campbell in Coal Creek near Coweta, Wagoner County, Oklahoma. She lived the first half of her life in Broken Arrow, and attended school there.

The family moved to Silverton, Oregon, about 1943, to work in the shipyards for the war effort during WWII. June and her mother, Susie, were certified welders, and her father, Pearl, and brother, Donald, were lay-out men. They worked at the Swan Island Shipyard for the Kaiser Company. While there, June met the man who became her first husband and father of her only daughter, David Fischl. They were married May 23, 1945. The union didn't last and June and daughter moved back to Oklahoma mid 1946. They were divorced September 6, 1947.

She remarried on November 24, 1947 to Hoyet Seals. During their marriage, he worked for the Bob Adams Dairy Farm, and she worked at the Cozy Cafe in Broken Arrow. She became a member of the First Baptist Church during that time. Hoyet helped her through the battle with polio that assailed her four year old daughter. During their marriage, they lost their only child, a boy, to a miscarriage in the sixth month. That union ended March 2, 1952.

She married again March 16, 1953, to her soul-mate and husband of 42 years, Jack Norris Raney. June earned her LPN license while they were married, and spent 12 years as supervisor of one of his mother's nursing homes in first Stillwell then Broken Arrow. She retired from nursing in 1964, and for several years owned and operated her own greenhouse and statuary business in Coweta. At various times in her life, as well as the greenhouse, she ran a cafe/bar with Jack, helped him raise metal buildings, raised exotic fowl and rabbits, and for the last 25 years of her life, was a respected Himalayan cat breeder. Their union ended with Jack's death from an unexpected illness the day after Christmas in 1987.

Just before Jack's death, she met, through her daughter, Coleman Cleo Summers, a gentleman who had lost his wife just two months before Jack's death. They soon became friends, and when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given only months to live, she moved in and took over his care. They married, at his request and for his peace of mind, on September 22, 1989. He died 22 days later.

Four years later, again through a mutual friend, she met Olen Andrew Battenfield, a retired truck driver. They kept company for two years before getting married in a double ceremony with his younger brother. Another of his brothers, a minister, performed the service held in a park in Muskogee September 12, 1995. They were together untill her death in 2010.

June was happiest when she was outside in her vegetable and flower gardens, but especially her flowers. She had a well known "green thumb" and could literally, or so it seemed, raise plants from the dead. She had a real fondness for orchids, and she filled her house with them.

She had one daughter, Cheryl Lee Moore of Tulsa; two grandchildren, Karla Dawn Gifford of Tulsa, and James Don Moore of Oolagah; six g-grandchildren and one g-g-grandson. She was preceded in death by two husbands; Jack Norris Raney, and Coleman Cleo "Curley" Summers, and was survived by her current husband, Olen Andrew Battenfield of Muskogee. She lies in eternal rest at the side of her soulmate of 42 years, Jack, in the Park Grove Cemetery in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Jack Norris Raney Birth: Jun. 19, 1930
Charleston
Franklin County

Death: Dec. 26, 1987
Tulsa
Tulsa County
Oklahoma, USA
Jack was born June 19, 1930, in Charleston, Franklin County, Arkansas, to Sherman Norris Raney and Helen Pink Crabtree. He was second oldest of five children having two sisters and two brothers.

He was married twice. First to Pat (maiden name unknown) Forbes for a brief time. His second marriage on March 16, 1952 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, to June Elizabeth Carpenter, was to last 42 years, ending only upon his death. He had no children of his own, but raised June's daughter, Cheryl.

He and June spent their lives working together. They operated a cafe/bar in Chouteau, Oklahoma for a while when first married. He also had his own small trucking company, hauling hay, lumber, and other miscellaneous things.

They lived in Stillwell, Oklahoma for a few years. While June managed a nursing home in town for his mother, Jack worked a truck farm 7 miles outside of town with his father.

When they moved back to Broken Arrow, June worked in the nursing home while he truck farmed with his daddy. During this time, he and his daddy built a truckstop on old Hwy. 51 just north of Coweta, Oklahoma. They called it The Five Acres and he and June ran it. At the same time, he owned and operated the third largest vending machine route in Oklahoma, quitting only when he was diagnosed with emphysema. They closed the cafe, sold their company and moved to New Mexico where the air was dryer. While there, they operated a cafe, a small vending machine route, and a pool hall.

They moved back to Oklahoma after three years. Jack and his daddy raised and sold cattle and hogs for a while, until he and June decided to make use of her green thumb and build a greenhouse/statuary business next to the old cafe. They had a very successful business raising plants and exotic fowl and rabbits until the summer of 1980, when their entire business was washed away in a hundred year flood.

They rolled up their sleeves, cleaned up the area, and began raising Himalayan cats. While June spent time with the cats, Jack started raising metal buildings. Eventually, June joined him in that business, and they ran them both, cats and buildings, at the same time.

Just before Thanksgiving, 1987, he got sick with what they thought was the flu. He had Thanksgiving dinner with his family for the last time. One week before Christmas, he was admitted to the hospital in Tulsa, where he died at 5:30 a.m. on December 26, 1987, during the worse ice storm in decades.

Jack loved to collect old guns and other antiques.

Jack was an organ donor, who, upon his death, gave life to a 5 year old girl with his bone marrow, and first sight to a 7 year old girl who was born blind.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Pink Crabtree Raney of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

He is survived by his wife, June Elizabeth Raney of the home; one daughter, Cheryl Moore of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two sisters, Alma Lee Fowler of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Myrtle Ann Blevins of Altus, Oklahoma; two brothers, Dean and Gene, both of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements have been made with Hayhurst-Marlin Funeral Home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He will be interred in Park Grove Cemetery, also in Broken Arrow.

David was born David Fischl to William "Moses" Fischl and Jenna Flora Gitskey on November 22, 1926, in New York City. He was the fifth of six children, and grew up in the Bronx.

When David was sixteen years old the family moved to Oregon where there was work to be had in the shipyards aiding the war effort. It was here, at the age of nineteen, that he met and married June Elizabeth Carpenter on May 23, 1945 in Portland, Oregon. From this union he fathered one daughter, Cheryl Lee Fischl. They seperated shortly after the birth of the baby, and mother and child returned to the mother's home state of Oklahoma. They divorced September 6, 1947.

He enlisted in the US Army in 1945, toward the end of WWII.

David was married four more times. First, very briefly, to a lady named Blanche, last name unknown. Next was Marion Mather, at which time he changed his last name to hers. This was a business related decision. They both started working at Miracle Ear at the same time and they operated a hearing aide business together. His fourth wife was Elaine Segret Moore. During their marriage they operated a hospital supply and hearing aid business together. His fifth wife's name is unknown, but it is understood that it was brief, also ending in divorce. None of these unions produced more children.

The last twenty two years were spent with his life partner, Evelyn Gomez, of the home at the time of his death. They spent many happy hours at one of their favorite pastimes, dancing. He also liked to fish and hunt.

David was preceded in death by his parents: William and Flora Fischl; three brothers: Benjamin Frederick, Seymore and Harold; and one sister, Anna Lillian Renfrow. Two great-grandchildren also preceded him: Kenndall Don Moore and Alexis Rose Moore. He leaves behind his life partner, Evelyn Gomez of the home; daughter Cheryl Moore of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two grandchildren; Karla Dawn Gifford of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and James Don Moore of Claremore, Oklahoma; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren with a third due in 2013.

His remains are being handled by the Desert Memorial Cremation & Burial Society in Las Vegas, Nevada.
