Notes

9. John Carpenter

Many have only confirmed to this John with birth ranges from 1760 to 1765.

SPOUSE-DAUGHTER:  Information from Taylor County's County Clerk in a letter to Janet Gesas, Salt Lake City, received 23 January 1974.  It stated that "Lusanah" or "Susanah" Harr was the daughter of John and Ann Carpenter and was born in Monongalia County, Virginia.  (See files of  4th great grand daughter Janet Gesas Hornick, 5594 So. Lansing Ct., Englewood, Colorado 80111.  H-6, item #7).

SPOUSE-CHILDREN: "Carpenters of the South," by Terry L. Carpenter, e-mail 1999: diluvius@flash.net, FHL 929.273 C225 ctl, chapter entitled "John Carpenter of Monongalia and Marion Counties, West Virginia", pages 1-4, published in 1990:  "John Carpenter was born c1765 in NY or NJ and died c1827 in VA (DARM: 63, 560). He was possibly descended from John....... This John Carpenter's father, John Carpenter, was born c1710-1750 (probably around 1740), married Anna ---, and was a native of NY according to GSM (Goldie Sweet Martin, "Those Martins of Ours, and Some Related Families," Portland, Oregon 1979.)  He could be a son of John and Mary (Drivers) Carpenter. There is strong evidence of some type of connection in the family names of descendants, but more research is needed.  John Carpenter of Monongalia Cny VA married Nancy Miller c 1785 (GSM)."  Their children listed. See C-3, #1, pages 1-4.

PARENTS-SPOUSE-SOME CHILDREN: "Some Martin Cousins", Goldie Sweet Martin and Dorothy Martin Bayless, 1979, pages 222-224: "Carpenter, John, Sr. (John 1 to Long Island 1700 and Anna) married Nancy Miller."  Eight of their children and their spouses given.  See M-17.  NOTE: Data submitted 19 Jun 1979 from Mary B. Carpenter, Star Route 6, Box 198, Lewisburg, W.Va, 24901.

PARENTS-BIRTH-SPOUSE-CHILDREN-DEATH: Ancestral File, 1998 Edition submitted in 1997 by Donald and Judith Brothers, HC33, Box 1176, Boise, ID 83706.  "John Carpenter, b. 1765, NY, fa. John Carpenter, mo. Anna, sp. Nancy Miller"  Children given as: "John M., Prudence Lucy, Ashman, Mary, David G., Jane, Lorenna, Rowena, Elizabeth, Nancy Ann and Elmira."  Only John M. has spouses given.  [In 1999 Jan wrote to the Brothers, but did not hear back.]

DEED: Descendant Gary Baker, garyb@strategic.com, wrote 26 Apr 2002: "Also found a Monongalia Co. deed dated March 1830 from John Carpenter heirs (11 of them) including William Baker and wife Elizabeth selling Pricket Creek property to Ebenezer Graham. There were other parcels sold by John Carpenter heirs in 1839 as well.  I think this resolves my question about where William's sons got money to buy 150 Ac. while in their 20's. in the 1840's - [from] mom [of] Elizabeth (Carpenter)."

QUESTION/CONFLICT: Was John married twice, first to Nancy Miller and second to Ann ---?  If so, it would appear that the first children are Nancy's and the later children Ann's.  See notes of the children, especially Lucy Prudence, Lorenna/Lurana, etc.  See also C-3, #3, a copy of the 1993 Ancestral File submission of John Carpenter and Sarah Mary Driver.  It would appear that their son John was born in 1747 in Gloucester, NJ.  Further, it would seem unlikely, based on his birth date, that he could be this John.

INVENTORY: See Notebook II, page 40 - Information on a John Carpenter, Inv. 7-13-1826 and Sale Bill 10-21-1826.  ACTION: Check original record.

MIGRATION PATTERNS: Robert M. Hershman reported via e-mail on 28 Apr 1998 that many of the lines he has researched "came to central WV from either NY or NJ.  The migration pattern included their stopping for a period in Hampshire, Hardy County, WV or Frederick Co., MD."

POSSIBLE SON: The 1810 Census indicates another son, probably born in the late 1700's, according to information found in that census by Patty Helms, April 1998.  This would explain the gap around 1790-1793.

PROBABLE DAUGHTER: Patty reported on May 10, 1998 that Phoebe Carpenter who married a John Stouffer (?sp.) signed off on the settlement of the estate.  Thus, it appears that she may have been the youngest daughter of John and Ann. See C-9.

HISTORICAL NOTES: Gary Baker sent a Carpenter Family History written in 1984 by an unknown author, possibly Carl Carpenter: "During the early 1700's, three brothers by the names of John, Ashman and David Carpenter lived on Long Island, New York.  The three were of Scotch-Irish  extraction and it was not clear if the young men's parents were of Scottish and Irish ancestry  or whether they were Scottish settlers sent to Northern Ireland to help colonize the land for Great Britain.  In any case John traveled to Fort Pitt, Ashman moved to North Carolina and David moved to Philadelphia."

************
The following notes are from Patty Carpenter Helms, 1998: "John died in 1827 believed to be in Monongalia County, VA.  His daughters were married in Monongalia County, and he is listed in the 1810, 1820 Monongalia census.  He is also listed in the Virginia Tax records.  NOTE: John bought property with William Miller on Siscoe's Run.  Is William Miller a brother-in-law?  NOTE:  Listed in 1810 census as John Carpenter, John Carpenter Jr.  Is his middle name S.?

CENSUS: In 1810 there were 9 children listed as living in the household; it lists 2 males under the age of 10 which would account for David born 1803, Ashman born 1801; 1 male age 16-26 not sure of who this could.  Is there another brother not accounted for?  2 males age 45 & up, one is John the father, who is the other?  2 females under the age of 10 which is probably Rhoanna and Lurenna and Phoebe; 4 females ages 10-16.

POSSIBLE ANCESTORS: On 9 July 2000, Paul Shroyer sent a five page report with Carpenter descendants.  John Carpenter, below, was given as "Generation No. 16", with the following ancestors.  See Jan Hornick's "Gen - Carpenter Descendants - Paul Shroyer - July 2000" in her Word file, along with a Gen Forum discussion of William Carpenter, born 1605, Generation 11.

"JOHN16 CARPENTER II (JOHN15, JOHN14, CAPT. HOPE13, CAPT. JOHN12, WILLIAM BATT11, WILLIAM10, WILLIAM9, WILLIAM8, JOHN7, JAMES6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, JOHN3, RICHARD2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1762 in Long Island  N.Y., and died Bef. 1827 in Marion  Co.  W.Va..  He married NANCY ANNA MILLER Abt. 1785.  She was born Abt. 1767 in Marion Co. W.Va.."

Anna

SPOUSE-CHILDREN:  See notes on husband, John Carpenter.  QUESTION: Are Nancy Miller and Ann or Anna the same person?  Or did John marry first Nancy Miller, the mother of his first several children, then subsequently marry an Ann who was the mother of his later children?  Marriage and other records of the younger children report an "Ann."

NAME:  We know the name Anna but no surname as Ann or Nancy Miller.  It appears 3 women merged together.

NAME: "Yelberton" is really just Yelverton, the name "Yelverton" comes from a surname which comes from a town name, and the "v" is correct.  I have a whole string of forename Yelvertons in Rhode Island, and the interesting thing is that not even one of them named a son after himself, but their sisters seemed fond of the name.  John F. Subject: [CARPENTER] Fleming KY Census

If Thomas Carpenter was born circa 1808 in Fleming KY, then his parents should be in the census of > 1810.  Here is what pops up for Fleming County census records on Carpenters:
 1810 CENSUS
                                                                                            Kids -Adults -Total
Hary [Henry] Carpenter  Flemingsburg, Fleming, Kentucky     4          2         6
John Carpenter  Flemingsburg, Fleming, Kentucky                   5          2          7
Richard Carpenter  Flemingsburg, Fleming, Kentucky              1          2          3
William Carpenter  Flemingsburg, Fleming, Kentucky              4         1           6

Unfortunately, all earlier census records were burned.  But this should give you a good starting point for research.
By the way, on Ancestry.com there are many family files submitted for the Thomas who married Nancy Connard/Conrad.
Almost all of them reflect a birth date for Thomas of Feb 25, 1808 in KY but don't specify Fleming.

Thomas Bedford Carpenter was born in 1835 and we have fairly strong linkage for him to John Wesley Carpenter. Thomas Bedford Carpenter married Nicey Bell Sharp whose family also lived at Thompson’s Creek, less than a mile from T. S. Carpenter’s 1878 home. The DNA is inconclusive in this as we had no solid DNA linkages to John Wesley Carpenter or Thomas Bedford. T. S. Carpenter’s first born son was named Thomas Bedford Carpenter adding to the circumstantial evidence that John Carpenter you mention may well have been Temple’s brother.

27. Thomas Carpenter II

Y-DNA:  See Group 7 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project.

Ann at Clem@sonic.net provided information on the Descendants of Thomas II
Carpenter.  His ancestry is still of debate however.
Charlotte Smith reports that Thomas died of wounds received in the
Revolutionary War while he had returned home.  Those wounds must have took over
45 years to kill him, if the information is for this Thomas.

I found the Land Grant concerning Thomas Carpenter that I mentioned to
you.
1) Thomas Carpenter 3 Aug 1771 Augusta Co., VA  115 acres on Potts Creek a
branch of James River.
also:
2) Thomas Carpenter 1 Aug 1772 Augusta Co. 50 acres on South side of James
River.
I believe that you asked where Potts Creek is located.   Patsy had the
information available to her and she has identified the place as being
in Alleghany Co., VA .  This puts Thomas in close proximity to where
John F. owned land in Greenbrier and his son Joseph married Anna Miller
in Monroe.   Allegheny Co. borders both Greenbrier and Monroe Cos of
today.  It would be very interesting to me to know exactly where it is
to see just how close they were.
Also of note:
Jeremiah Carpenter  1789 owns land on Elk River; additional land on
Holly Creek,of Elk R. or Halley Creek
1822 he owns land , 50 acres on Elks R. on which he has a house and
orchard 1826 land on Camp Run; ;  1833 Preston Co. Squirrrel Run (close
to Harrison); 1796 Holly Fork of Elk R. on Burton's Bottom; 1796
Randolph Co. on Holly Call;ed Potato Patch.
* I do not know if these are all the same Jeremiah or if one or more
occurances are a son.
John Carpenter (I assume John F CARPENTER)
1787 head water of HANDS CREEK Branch of NEW R. adjoining Tim Sullivan
in Greenbrier Co.,
1792 Swobe's Knob, Greenbrier
1799 ELK RIVER, Greenbrier
The Elk River covers a lot of  territory , as it is mentioned in grants
as far away as Randolph Co. Where Jeremiah is.   It will take a bit more
work before I can say for certain, if ever, who John F. belongs to.  If
Patsy has Potts Creek position correct, Thomas is the closest to John F.
Thank you so very much for helping me, Sandy.

Hi John,
Thomas Carpenter III of Amherst Co. VA and Greene Co. IN didn't marry Catherine Shamburger -- his wife was named Sarah. The marriage of a Thomas Carpenter, or an Owen Carpenter (both are claimed at times), to a Catherine Shamberger also isn't correct -- someone, years ago, stated that Owen Carpenter's wife was a Shamburger but when questioned for proof, stated it was because Owen was buried in the Shamburger Cemetery. As you know that isn't proof of anything, especially if the Shamburgers came along later -- the cemetery most likely started out as the Carpenter Cemetery. Nevertheless, many people repeat it as fact and it's all over the internet as though it's truth.

This is a true story. I have researched this and found that there is a Shamburger family cemetery located in Moore County, North Carolina. It is not far from Dover Baptist Church in Star, North Carolina. It is on private land and has never been recognized or added to the state cemetery lists. It is old and overgrown now with a stone fence all around it that was built about 1927. It covers about 1/2 acre with about 50-75 graves in it. There is now no road to it as it was done away with many years ago. Only a trail now to it. Not far from it is a plaque in the ground stating that on this spot Thomas Owen Carpenter and his infant son were killed by Cornwallace's soldiers. Supposedly this is where his home stood too. I spoke to the family that ownes the land now and they have validated all this to me. The cemetery was on the land when they purchased it many years ago. They used to keep it up, but as they are now up in years, are unable to do so.

Both buried in same grave in Shamburger Cemetery, montgomery Co., North Carolina.

BIRTH: Either VA or England

PENSION: See Books, Articles, Wills & such:   RIN 20122 Benjamin Carpenter Pension Application.pdf

From the Journal of Illinois State Historical Society, Vol. 8, Number 3, Oct.
1915, page 441, as reported by Richard Charles Carpenter, tells of Sgt. John
Carpenter's brothers Benjamin Carpenter's service.  "Benjamin Carpenter was a
native of Virginia, born in 1753.  He enlisted for four years in Amherst
County, Virginia.  His Company joined the Army of Lafayette and he was present
at the surrender of Cornwallis.  He came to Illinois and resided in Schuyler
County where he died."  (532156) Illinois Certificate #22315.

John L. Carpenter of New Hampshire indicates that this BENJAMIN CARPENTER,
born Abt. 1756; died September 18, 1829, Kingston,RI; m. THANKFUL THOMPSON.
However the death date listed above is the one I have for Thankful Thompson who
was born abt. 1756.  Abit of confusion which needs clarification.

Some Problems of our Family descent from the William Carpenters of New York.
Some of the problems stem from there being two Benjamin Carpenters from the region of Amherst Co., Va. around 1780.
Early records are indeed scant and early regional historians confused the two.   It appears as though geographical and chronological proximity constituted a degree of proof sufficient to support a possible family relationship. For the sake of clarity, let me distinguish them as Benjamin #1 and Benjamin #2.
What is known about Benjamin #1 (Not our ancestor):
Born: March 01, 1755 Rockfish River, Amherst Co., VA
Died: 1840 Knox County, IL
Wife: Sarah ?
Known service: From the Journal of Illinois State Historical
Society, Vol. 8, Number 3, Oct. 1915, page 441, as reported by Richard Charles Carpenter, tells of Sgt. John
Carpenter's brothers Benjamin Carpenter's  service. "Benjamin Carpenter was a native of Virginia, born in 1753.
He enlisted for four years in Amherst County, Virginia. His Company joined the Army of Lafayette and he
was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. He came to Illinois and resided in Schuyler County where
he died." (532156) Illinois Certificate  #22315.
What is known about Benjamin #2...our ancestor
Born: 1730-1750 Probably in England
Died: 1832 Amherst Co., Va.
Wife: Mary (?)
Known service:
From "Amherst County , Virginia in the Revolution", by Lenora H. Sweeny,  Clearfield Co., 1998 comes the following:
In the same publication, under TYLER, JOHN -- .... Eaton Carpenter, son of Benjamin Carpenter, testified that his father was drafted in the Amherst Militia, Siege of York & Capture of Cornwallis. He heard his father say that John Tyler was in the same service. .... May 19, 1846, Col. George W. Higginbotham, Amherst co., Va., aged 63, "Recollects distinctly that in  looking over his father's Revolutionary papers, he came across several muster
rolls containing the names of soldiers that composed the several companies that were in service under deponents father Col. or major Higginbotham, who was an  officer in the Revolutionary War of the above grades; deponent has heard his father say that he was in service against the  Indians at Charlottesville, Williamsburg, & Yorktown. Deponent say that the Captain's name whose roll the name of John  Tyler was on, but it is very clear in his recollection of having seen the names of John Tyler & Benj. Carpenter on the above  rolls that were in possession of his father, Col. James Higginbotham. The muster rolls are at the court house or in Kentucky."

Some of our family historians think that perhaps the militia rosters were subsequently taken to Kentucky. A recent paid  search of the W. Va. State Library turned up nothing new. As far as I can determine our Benjamin, of yet unidentified father,  cannot be proved to be a participant in The Revolutionary War although, based
upon testimony of his son Eaton, he did  serve. My information is that records for the county militiamen/women were not well kept. This was a free-for-all and anyone who wanted to could fire a few shots at the British_it was open season.
It is not my purpose to discredit any of our family historians. Rather, it is to their credit that they spent a great deal of time  and money in diligent efforts to uncover facts as they might exist. If I did not have a computer and unlimited access to Internet  resources and contacts, I too would have been somewhat forced to accept the
prior history used by James and Raymond.   I can appreciate the frustration Raymond must have had in accumulating his information, even though he took a calculated  guess (in my opinion) by making the N.Y. connection. Genealogy is not an exact science nor is the solution of jigsaw puzzles.
Haven't we all had a piece that looked so much like a fit that with a little forcing it would work? As in cards, it is not possible to play our best game with a few cards missing.
No proof has been produced to support the linkage of our Benjamin to the N.Y. Carpenters. That linkage requires a  disregarded of some anecdotal evidence supplied by Elsie (Drummond) Carpenter who related that the grandsons of Austin  Carpenter said Austin told them that his father, Benjamin, was born in England, came to America when in his teens, and he,  Austin, was born in Queen and King Co., Va.. Although his writing is rife with prior history confusing the two Benjamin's,  similar statements were related by Col. William Carpenter. Although the Col.
repeated some of the prior errors, he did relate  a conversation, which must be taken as supportive of the information related by Elsie Drummond.
Looking at the geography, timing, and distances involved, it appears highly unlikely that our Benjamin was born in Musketa  Cove, N.Y. as some have it. If the birth date attributed to Joseph Sr. is correct, then he was in his mid-sixties when Benjamin was born. Why would he and his then wife have traveled all the way back to
N.Y. to have a baby? Possible, yes...probable,  no. Some of the numbers indicate that Joseph became a father at age 16. No proof has ever been produced that the supposed Francis Elizabeth Dames, as a wife of Joseph, ever existed. The biggest problem I have is that I can find no hard  evidence that our Benjamin was the son of Joseph. In fact, Benjamin appears to be tacked on to the end of the list of Joseph  and (?)'s children. Truly a child born out of season if those figures are correct.
Early genealogists mixed our Benjamin with Benjamin s/o Thomas and assigned a first wife, Sarah, to him who in truth was the daughter-in-law of Thomas and the spouse of Benjamin s/o Thomas. There is no evidence that my Benjamin ever had any wife except Mary as proved in his will. Raymond George accepted some of the
early works reflecting Sarah as a first wife. A first wife would have made Eaton and Enoch half brothers to Austin who passed the name of Eaton to his children. It seems unlikely, though certainly possible, that one would name his children after a half brother. I'm going with Mary as his only proven wife.
In view of somewhat sketchy information, I am concluding that our Benjamin came from England when he was in his teens and settled in Queen and King County, Va. and migrated to Amherst County after Austin was born. Unfortunately, records may never have existed and if the did, they were probably destroyed. That position is taken in view of the following historical note.
"1864 March Co1one1 Uric Dahlgren and 120 Union troops enter King and Queen County and skirmish with the 9th Virginia Cavalry and Home Guard units at Bruirigton. As Dahlgren's troops move down the River Road, they are ambushed near Stevensville and Mantapilce and Colonel Dahlgren is killed. In retaliation, the King and Queen Court House, Clerk's Office, jail, several stores and homes belonging to Robert Pollard, County Clerk, and William Martin, are burned by Union troops stationed at Gloucester Point. Tradition holds that the tavern was spared because the troops were told someone was lying ill upstairs with smallpox causing them to flee the area, but that in reality no one with smallpox had been in the building."
So_we may never know!
Alton Carpenter.

Thanks for the file.  Here is a little bit more info that I didn't see in your files that you might like to have.  I'm still trying to find Benjamin's father for real and not a guess.  Has any progress been made there?  Benjamin and Mary had 8 children of whom I am a descendant of their son Richard.  Sara and Benjamin only had the two sons, Enoch and Eaton  Benjamin Carpenter.  JLC

Amherst Co is still in existence, north of the James River and Bedford/Appomattox Counties. It was formed in 1761 from Albemarle County, and was divided in 1808 to form Nelson County.

WARNING:
E-MAIL: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 From: Alton Carpenter
To: John Carpenter Hi John:
I have unwittingly published what I now believe to be
erroneous information concerning the origins of my ancestor Benjamin
Carpenter, of Amherst Co., Va..   I used information which I have traced
back to Raymond Carpenter in an article which was published in the
Carpenter and Related Family Journal.  I have examined all of the
available evidence and am in agreement with Terry L. Carpenter that
there is more information to declaim than to support the premise that
Benjamin was a member of the Joseph Carpenter family from New York.
Also, I believe, based upon his will, that my Benjamin had only one
wife, Mary (?), as his will states.  The first wife, Sarah, attributed
to him by prior historians was in truth the wife of the Benjamin who
died in Ill..  Eaton and Enoch were full brothers to my Hensley Sr..
As far as I can determine, my Benjamin arrived in America from England
while he was in his teens, resided in Queen and King Co., Va., and later
moved to Amherst Co.   Recollections of near kin of Austin Carpenter
recorded by Elsie (Drummond) Carpenter and other descendants of James,
although anecdotal, are weighted heavier than the unsupported
connections to the N.Y. Carpenters.
As soon as I correct a few dates, I will put revised files on my web
sites. I wanted to let you know this as early as possible so you can
consider changes in Carpenters 2000 release.  Please accept my apology
for any inconvenience this may have caused.   Again, thanks for your
help and participation.
Best Regards,  Alton D. Carpenter
MARRIAGE: The above E-MAIL indicates two Benjamin Carpenter families merged
together.  When further information comes forth they will be split.

AFN MTLF-9K (B. ABT 1773) and AFN T7KJ-MK (B. ABT 1776) appear to be
the same person.

He reportedly never married, but lived to be an old man and left Enoch
Carpenter and his other half brothers and half sisters in his Final Will and
Testament recorded in the Court House of Amherst County, VA.  Per Frank
Masterson Carpenter in the "Carpenter and Related Family Historical Journal"

a caravan of thirteen wagons headed by Enoch Carpenter.  She and her husband
then moved on to Livingston County, Tennessee where numerous kin of the name of

116. Benjamin Carpenter

Subject: Benjamin CARPENTER - SC (maybe NC?) Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999
From: "J. R. Carpenter"
I am looking for any information on Benjamin CARPENTER (born ca 1770-80,
died ca 1836-1840 Dale Co. AL). According to oral tradition in one branch of
descendants, his name was Samson (perhaps Samson was his middle name?).
Benjamin Carpenter married ca 1806 to Milly --?--. They resided in SC ca
1808-1816, in Dale Co. AL in 1830, and bought land on 5 Jan 1836 in Dale Co.
AL. Milly and children resided in Dale Co. AL in 1840 and in Coffee Co. AL
in 1850. No further mention of Benjamin after the land sale that I've seen.
His son, my ancestor, Sampson A. CARPENTER (born ca 1816 in SC), married ca
1838 to Nancy MAYBERRY (born ca 1817 AL). They resided in Coffee Co. AL in
1850 and 1860. There is an established MABRY line in Union Co SC, coming
from Surry Co VA but through the Warren Co area of NC (near Nash Co). My
Nancy may be from a Franklin Co GA branch of the Mabrys.
Benjamin's family may have been in NC before SC, but that is unproven. I
thought at one time that his father was Thomas "Jack"  of Nash Co NC, but I
have not been able to prove it. There were some PA Dutch Zimmermans who came
to middle NC in the 1750s, eventually moving south until in Old Tryon Co,
with some of this line being buried as Carpenters in Blacksburg SC. I have
been unable to prove any descent from these people as well.
I have info on Benjamin's descendents, if anyone is interested.
Thanks, Rick Carpenter.
