Marion County History
Marion County was created by an act of the Virginia Assembly on January 14, 1842, from parts of Harrison and Monongalia counties. The county was named in honor of General Francis Marion (1732-1795), the legendary hero of the American Revolutionary War.

BIRTH-PARENTS-SPOUSES: Information from Alan Bunner, Nov 1999: "John S. Carpenter was born, possibly in New York, about 13 June 1786, a son of John (who died before 1827-28) and Anna Carpenter of Monongalia County. According to Marion County researcher Ronald Leon Robe, John Carpenter Jr. was born in New York State 13 June 1787.  He married first, in Monongalia County, 19 August 1809, Joanne McGee.  He married second, in Monongalia County, 10 April 1820, Mary Bunner.  John married third, in Monongalia County, 28 August 1825 or 1826 Anna Clelland, daughter of James Clelland.  According to daughter Mercia, Anna was born in New York State.  John Carpenter died in Marion County (?) 24 July 1861 (13, 610).

Carpenter", parents: John Carpenter and Nancy Miller, and spouses: Mary Carpenter, m. 1811; Mary Bunner, m. 10 Apr 1820; Anne Clelland, m. 28 Aug 1826.  NOTE: Several of the children from the first marriage to "Mary Carpenter" were reported as born in Georgia and in conflict with the with the data above and below.  ALSO NOTE: In 1999 Jan wrote Don and Judith, but did not hear back.

CENSUS: 1850 Marion County (Eastern District), Virginia Census; DPL Film Va 1850, Roll 5, enum. 7 Sept 1850, dwelling 658: "John Carpenter, 62, M, Farmer, born in New York; Rebecca, 18, F, born in Ohio; Mathew, 14, M, born in Virginia; David, ?12, born in Virginia" (prob. 12).  See H-23, #9a and 9b in the files of Jan Hornick.  NOTE: In the 1860 Census he was residing with his daughter Mercy and reported he was age 74 and born in Pennsylvania.  See H-22, #17b.  See also M-17, page 222.

BIRTH-PARENTS-DEATH: "Marion County WV Deaths"  SLC FHL 975.454 V23m, page 209: "Carpenter, John 'S.', b. 13 June 1787, New York, son of John & Anna Carpenter, d. 24 July 1861, (married.)"  See M-10, #1.

MARRIAGES: On June 3, 1998 Patty Carpenter Helms reported that all three marriages of John were in Monongalia County, Virginia.

LAND:  RichardCLarson@aol.com wrote 29 July 2005:  There "is a purchase in Monongalia County for land in 1805 by John Carpenter on Pricketts creek from William Miller. Cisoes run.  This also had John who married Joanna McGee."  He reported this John was born on Long Island, New York.

Page 15: "John Carpenter and Joanna "McGee," 19 Aug 1809.  No parents were given.  See Notebook II, page 43 in the files of Jan Hornick, Englewood, Colorado.  NOTE:  They were married by Joshua Hickman, Barb Stenberg reported July 2008.

SPOUSE-CHILD: "Carpenters of the South, A Compendium," FHL-SLC, 929.273 C225ctl. "John Carpenter, born 13 June 1786, died 24 July 1861 in Marion County (W) VA, married first ___ ___ before 1812, second Mary Bunner on 10 Apr 1820, third Anne Clelland on 28 Aug 1826."  NOTE: It would appear that Joanna may have died around 1819 as her son  William was born about 1815, Elmira in 1819 and her husband remarried in1820.  See C-3, #1, page 1.

RELATIONSHIP:  Barb Stenberg reported in June 2008 Joanna McGee and Owen McGee were aunt and nephew.

NAME: Surname Carpenter in AF, PRF and IGI, but no parents given. Probably not her maiden name. Compare AFN 1W78-H6J of WV to 1W77-KW3 b. in NC.

NAME: Anne and in one other record Anna.

FATHER-MARRIAGE-CHILDREN: Information from Patty Carpenter Helms, Fairmont, WV, via Gedcom, 1998.  NOTE: In this source her name is given as "Anna."  Patty also lists two additional children, one with the same birthdate as Thomas W., Maydonna, b. 9 June 1840, and Elizabeth (no birth date given.)  QUESTION:  Both Maydonna and Thomas W. are shown with the same death date.  Is this correct?
