FATHER-CONFLICT: Patty Carpenter Helms reported via e-mail 29 Nov 1997 that Elmira and Nancy Ann were likely John Jr. (John S.)'s children.  Confirming this would be the property settlement she located in the Monongalia Court House in which the children are listed as Ashman, John, David, Prudence, Elizabeth, Rhoanna, Jane, Mary, Lurenna.

MARRIAGE-CHILDREN: Information 22 Nov 1999 from Alan Bunner, 7200 Burtonwood Drive, Alexandria, VA 22307; Alan.Bunner@hq.nasa.gov: "Nancy Ann Carpenter, born 1817, married in Monongalia County, 8 December 1831, Ashel Harr, born 1804-05. Surety for their marriage was Richard Harr (13, 610). Children: Mary Ann, b. 1830; Charles, b. 1835.

Gallihue, 15; Thomas 'M.' Carpenter, 10;" all born in Virginia.  NOTE: Asahel and family live near Merrick Harr, age 37, and his wife Sophia.  See H-23, #5a and 5b in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, CO.  NOTE: Thomas is probably Thomas W. Carpenter, not M., and the nephew of Nancy Ann Carpenter, and the son of John Carpenter born in 1796 and Anne Clelland.  Thomas W. Carpenter was born 23 June 1840 and would have been 10 in July of 1850.  NOTE: Thomas W. named a son "Asahel B.", probably after his uncle.  QUESTION: Is Mary Ann Gallihue Asahel and Barbara Lyman's daughter?  Is she their grand-daughter??  What about Charles A.  NOTE: Ronald Leon Robe of Fairmont, WV reported to Alan Bunner (probably based on the above) that Mary Ann and Charles were children of Nancy Ann and "Ashel" Harr.  See e-mail of November 22, 1999 from Alan.

Barker, 21, without occupation and Thomall? [Thomas] Carpenter, 31, farmhand, (This is probably Thomas M./W. Carpenter, age 10, listed above in the 1850 Census.)  Also listed was Asahel B. Carpenter, age 4, born in West Virginia. The others were all born in Virginia.  See Notebook II, page 25.  Question: How is Elizabeth E. Barker related?  Is she their daughter or possibly niece?  Is Elizabeth married or widowed?

CENSUS: 1880 West Virginia, Marion County Census: "Ashel Harr, age 76, farmer, born in WV, father born in Pa and mother born in WV; Nancy Ann, age 63, wife, born in WV; Mattie Linn, age 3, grand daughter, born in WV," as were her parents who were not listed.  See files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, CO, H-20, #16 and H-25, #4.  QUESTION: Who are Mattie Linn's parents?

DEATH: "Joseph Barker Family of Monongalia County," compiled by Margaret Capelety, Mannington, WV 26582.  See B-6, #1, page 12: "Asahel Harr, b. abt 1804 - 5 May 1887 (83-2-1) Colfax Cemetery."

NOTE: There are three Asahel or Ashel Harrs in the area  This one, John's son; Richard Harr's son: Ashel born 1840/1841 (RIN 1272) and Nun's son, Asahel, (RIN 1844) born 1854/1855.  This Ashel (1804/1805) and Nun's son have the variant spellings given above.  Thusfar, Oct 1995, there has only been one reference, the 1850 Census, to Richard's son Asahel.

Surety for their marriage was Richard Harr (13, 610). Children: Mary Ann, b. 1830; Charles, b. 1835.  My reference #610 is: Research and family data from Ronald Leon Robe, Fairmont, West Virginia."

124. William H. Carpenter

NAME: Middle name Harmon or Hanson???

PARENTS-SIBLINGS-CHILDREN: "Carpenters of the South," a book located October 1995 at the SLC FHL, 929.273 C 225 ctl, prepared 30 July 1990 by Terry L. Carpenter of 3351 Hickory Hill Road, Memphis, Tennessee 38815. In the chapter entitled "John Carpenter of Monongalia and Marion Counties, West Virginia, prepared Dec 13, 1989, the children of John Carpenter, born about 1710-1750 and "Anna ---" were listed.  "William H. (Hanson?) Carpenter, born about 1815, married Margaret --- about 1845, resided in Marion Cny VA in 1850 with children: Mary V., born about 1846; James L., about 1847; Warren Carpenter, about 1849."  See C-3, #1, page 1 in the files of Jan Hornick, Englewood, Colorado.

PARENTS-BIRTH-SIBLINGS: Information from Paul Shroyer, April 2000: "William Hanson Carpenter, b. 1815."  See "Carpenter - Shroyer" in Word files of Jan Hornick.

MARRIAGE: FHL Film 464957 Marion County Marriages 1842-1865: "William H. Carpenter and Margaret Baker, 5 Dec 1844"  Book A, page 9.  See Notebook I, page 109.

CENSUS: 1850 Virginia Census, Marion County Census; DPL Film VA-1850, Roll 5, Page 115, enum. 9 July 1850: "William Carpenter, 35, farmer, $1000; Margaret, 26, F; Mary A., 4; James L., 3, M; Warren, 1, M.  See H-23, #6a (back).

CENSUS: 1860 Virginia Census, Marion County, Film VA 1860-7, Denver Public Library, page 38, recorded 18 June 1860: " William H. Carpenter, 45, M, Farmer; Margaret, 35, F; Mary (middle initial ??P.??), 14, F; James L., 13, M; Warren (hard to read his name), 11, M; Vranna, age 7 (hard to read, probably Joanna), F; William W., 2, M; all born in Virginia."  They lived at dwelling 271, near Zimri, Nun and Sophia (Stark) Harr.  See H-22, #9.

NOTE: In the 1870 Census there is another William H. Carpenter listed, but age 33 and wife Isabelle, 23 (?) (or second wife).  See H-21, #5 (back).  This is not likely his son as he had a William W.  He was apparently deceased by this  1870 census as Margaret is listed alone with James, Warren, Joanna and William W.  This other William H. has a RIN of 2618.  His parents are David and Sarah Carpenter; he is husband of "Belle" Carpenter.

MIDDLE NAME: Source is from his son William Watson's death information.  CONFLICT: Paul Shroyer data reported "Hanson".

?DEATH?-BURIAL: FHL Film 464957, Marion County Cemeteries, Maple Grove: "Carpenter W. H., died 7/26/1867, age 72."  His son Warren was listed before him with the date of 9/26/1872, which would correlate from the death information obtained from other records.  However, the birth year of W. H. would be calculated as 1794 or 1795, and not 1814/1815.  QUESTION:  Is this the correct W. H.?  It seems questionable.  See Notebook IV, page 32.

128. Elmira Carpenter

PARENTS-MARRIAGE: "Carpenters of the South", SLC FHL 929.273 C225ctl, Chapter entitled "John of Monongalia Cny WV," 1990, page 3; information prepared by Terry L. Carpenter of Memphis, Tennessee: "Elmira Carpenter, married Owen McGee on 24 Feb 1837, no further information."   See C-3, #1 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, Colorado.  NOTE: Her parents were given in this source as John Carpenter and Nancy Miller.  CONFLICT-FATHER: See below.

PARENTS-BIRTH-SIBLINGS: Information from Paul Shroyer, April 2000: "Elmira Carpenter, b. 1819."  See "Carpenter - Shroyer" in Word files of Jan Hornick.

QUESTION: Did Elmira die before 1844?  Did she die in childbirth?  Owen McGee married an Elizabeth Harr on 9 Feb 1844 in Marion County.  See FHL Film 464,957 which included Marriages 1842-1865.  See Notebook I, page 109.  ACTION: Research further to verify the location is Marion County.

FATHER: Patty Carpenter Helms reported via e-mail 29 Nov 1997 that Elmira and Nancy Ann were likely John Jr. (John S.)'s children.  Confirming this would be the property settlement she located in the Monongalia Court House in which the children are listed as Ashman, John, David, Prudence, Elizabeth, Rhoanna, Jane, Mary, Lurenna.  NOTE: Paul Shroyer gives Elmira as a daughter of John Carpenter and Joanna McGee.

PROBABLE PARENTS: Patty Helms wrote in Oct 2000: "Also I have had to rethink that Elmira was John and Joanna McGee's daughter, She married Owen McGee and Owen was a brother to Joanna or so I'm told by a lady researching in California, the McGee's."  On 17 July 2001 Patty wrote, "I have a correction for you concerning Mercia Carpenter she was the daughter of John & I had MaryBunner as her mother, but I believe that is wrong.  Mercia had a half sister named Elmira that married Owen McGee.  Elmira I feel sure is the daughter of Mary Bunner."  E-mail address for Patty: PattyHelms@aol.com.

Owen T. McGee

MARRIAGE: "Carpenters of the South", SLC FHL 929.273 C225ctl, Chapter entitled "John of Monongalia Cny WV," 1990, page 3; information prepared by Terry L. Carpenter of Memphis, Tennessee: "Elmira Carpenter, married Owen McGee on 24 Feb 1837, no further information."   See C-3, #1 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, Colorado.  NOTE:  Barb Stenberg, bobbijo3@cox.net, reported in June 2008 Joanna McGee and Owen McGee were aunt and nephew.

SECOND-MARRIAGE: FHL Film 464957 Marion County Historical Records, Cemeteries and Marriages 1842-1865; Book A, page 7: "Owen McGee and Elizabeth Harr, 9 Feb 1844."  NOTE: Kim Moorehead Fluharty, kimfluharty@earthlink.net, reported 11 March 2002: "This is the same Owen, according to my records that was married to Elmira Carpenter."

CENSUS-QUESTION: Could Owen have had a second marriage to a Mary, following Elmira's death?  In the 1850 Census is an Owen McGee, draftsman, b. in Virginia, age 34 years; Mary, age 28; Elizabeth, 11 (Elmira's daughter?); Sarah, 6; Josephine, 4; and John, 2.  NOTE: 1860 Census below for children.  Or more likely, could "Mary" be an error?  Or could Mary have been Owen's sister?  Where is Elizabeth Annis Harr in the 1850 Census?  Barbara Stenberg reported that she believes, also, that Mary was an error and was likely Elizabeth.  ALSO NOTE: They reside next door to George and Sally Coffman in Taylor County, Virginia.  Barb also reported another son for Owen and Elizabith Annis: "That bit about Thomas being probaby one of them. The note [probably from the Guy Tetrick papers] said he was a child of Owen and  Annis Harr ( I presume McGee which I failed to indicate)  but his age was too old for that marriage. so I assigned him to Elimirah."

CENSUS: 1860 Virginia, Taylor County Census; SLC FHL Book 975.455 X2z, page 22: "McGee, Owen, 43, Farmer; Elizabeth A., 39; Sarah A., 15f; Josephine, 13f; John L. 11m; Richard, 9m; M. O., 6f; Hilard, 4f."  All were born in Virginia. See T-2.

BURIAL: FHL Film 0464957, Marion County Cemeteries: "Owen McGee and Dau. a t  Powell" - no birth and death dates given.  Following his name: "Annis McGee 2/7/1821 - 2/19/1911 and John R. McGee 9/24/1847 - 3/22/1924.  See IV, p. 29 and T-4, #10 and 11.  NOTE: Place of birth given in McGee or Scranage Cemetery as Harrison County.  NOTE: Barb Stenberg wrote 4 June 2008: "However in McGee, WV we met a delightful lady called Mrs. O. C. Knight. She lived right across the street from the Johnny McGee house. She remembered him. He never married.  Anyway there is a cemetery there. We went to it. It was all overgrown and many stones overturned from cows being allowed to graze there. But we found a stone which said Owen McGee and dau A.T. Powell.  there was also another name unreadable ________McGee followed by m  Annis McGee b 17 Feb 1821 d 19 Feb 1911."

PARENTS-DEED: "Taylor County Deeds, Book 1, vol. 1-2, 1844-1852," page 9, FHL 975.455 R28z. Land is being partitioned from the estate of Thomas and Mary McGee, conveyed to Owen, Nancy, Ann, Katharine, Sarah, Rebecca and John McGee as recorded in Harrison County, VA, in 1830.  11 Dec 1844  NOTE: Joanna McGee is not listed, unless she is "Ann."

BIRTH-PARENTS-SPOUSE: Kim Fluharty, kimfluharty@earthlink.net, wrote on 13 Nov 2002: "According to census records Owen McGee was born around 1816/1817, his ancestors settled what is called to this day the community of McGee in Taylor County toward the Valley Falls are and it is my bet he is buried in the McGee cemetary located there however it is very old and back in the woods and I haven't gotten there to check that as of yet.  Elizabeth Annis Harr  I have being born in Monongalia County Va. now WV on 2-7-1821 or 22. Died 2-19-1911 and is also buried at McGee cemetary in Taylor County. Owen and Elizabeth married 2-9-1844 in Marion County Va, now WV.. Owen's parents were Thomas McGee and Mary McGee according to a deed record.  According to 1860 census Owen was 43 years old and Elizabeth A. was 39 yrs old.  he was a farmer by trade. I also a Manassah 40 yr old merchant and wife Mary A. 26 yrs, maybe a brother to Owen not sure yet.  By the way McGee was founded by John R. McGee who started a Blacksmith shop there, this is taken from a book on Taylor County history.  The deed abstract info I mentioned is as follows Taylor County Deed Abstracts 1844-1852....  Entry 120. Benjiman a Coplin and Sarah his wife (Taylor), George Martin and Cecelia his wife (Taylor) and James Ryan and Sarah his wife (Taylor) a partition deed for two tracts belonging to the estate of Thomas McGee .  100 acres, the same as conveyed by James Radcliff to Owen McGee, Ann McGee, Katharine McGee, Sarah McGee and Rebecca McGee as recorded in Harrison County, Va.  (2) 2/3 of a tract conveyed by Evan Thomas and wife to George Thomas, deceased by his heirs conveyed to John McGee, Owen McGee, Nancy McGee, Katharine McGee, Sarah McGee, and Rebecca McGee as recorded in Harrison County, Va in 1830.  Mentions Abner Abott and Katharine his wife [sister of Owen], Mathew J. Orr and Sarah his wife, and Thomas Little.  11 December 1844."

488. Elizabeth "Bettie Ann" McGee

APPROXIMATE BIRTH-DEATH:  On 4 June 2008 Barb Stenberg wrote: "“...on the 1850 census we think the census made a mistake.  The mother was  Elizabeth age 28 and the person called Mary probably should have been Bettie Ann ( no doubt that is Elizabeth also).. I am not certain. There are some inconsistencies with Bettie Ann's age etc.  According to Tetrick's files. Bettie Ann died in 1852 at age 13 years."

130. Mercy Carpenter

NAME: Mercy or Mercia

BIRTH-MARRIAGE-CHILDREN: "Carpenters of the South, A Compendium," FHL-SLC, 929.273. "John Carpenter, born 13 June 1786, died 24 July 1861 in Marion County (W) VA, married first ___ ___ before 1812, second Mary Bunner on 10 Apr 1820, third Anne Clelland on 28 Aug 1826."  See C-3, #1, page 1 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, Colorado.  NOTE: It would appear that Mary Bunner only gave birth to one child that lived, Mercy, born 11 June 1825.  Mercy married Thornton Meyers Nuzum on 5 March 1850 and they had three children: J. Nelson, Richard Ferman, and T.M. Nuzum.  [See below for more children.]

BIRTH-PARENTS-MARRIAGE-CHILDREN-DEATH-BURIAL: Patty Carpenter Helms sent a Gedcom in 1998 that reported: "Mercia Carpenter, b. June 11, 1825 in Marion County, W(VA), d. December 25, 1915; bur. in Nuzum Cemetery 1, Marion County, WV; m. 3 Mar 1850,in Marion County, W(VA) to Thornton Meyer Nuzum."  Mercia was shown as the only child of John S. Carpenter, Jr. and Mary Bunner.  NOTE: On 10 Dec 1999 Patty wrote, "In Mercia's obituary, although it does not list her parents, she died in December 1915 and she is listed as 89 years old.  Mercia dob is given as June 11, 1826.  That would put her year of birth at 1825 or 1826."  On 17 July 2001 Patty wrote: "I have a correction for you concerning Mercia Carpenter she was the daughter of John & I had Mary Bunner as her mother,  but I believe that is wrong.  Mercia had a half sister named Elmira that married Owen McGee.  Elmira I feel sure is the daughter of Mary Bunner.  I am not sure whether Mercia is the daughter of Joanna McGee or Anna Clelland."  NOTE: Jan Hornick placed her with Anna Clelland, however if she were born in 1825 as reported, it would appear that she would more likely be Mary Bunner's daughter.

BIRTH-FATHER-MARRIAGE-CHILDREN-DEATH: "The Nuzum Family History," 1983 Revised; FHL 979.273 N979n, pages 11, 19 and 20. NOTE: This source reported "Mercia, 6/11/1825-12/25/1914, dau. of John Carpenter."  See N-5.

BIRTH-DEATH: "Marion County, West Virginia Death Records," FHL 975.454 V23m, Vol. 4, page 1131: "Nuzum, Mercia, b. 12 June 1825, d. 25 Dec. 1914, at Boothsville, W. Virginia. (married)."

MARRIAGE-CHILDREN: Information from 1996 Edition of Ancestral File.  NOTE: Seven children are listed.  NOTE ALSO: Birth given as 1822 which conflicts with the above sources.

MARRIAGE: FHL Film 464.957, Marion County Cemetery Records and Marriages 1842-1865; A, 35: "Thornton Nuzum and 'Masse' Carpenter, 5 March 1849."  See Notebook I, page 110.  CONFLICT: The above record differs by one year.

BIRTH-PARENTS: Information via e-mail from Alan Bunner, 7200 Burtonwood Drive, Alexandria, VA 22307; Alan.Bunner@hq.nasa.gov, 1 Nov 1999: "Mercy Carpenter, born 1827, was a child of John Carpenter's third wife, Anna Clelland, not Mary Bunner, I think."  CONFLICT: Birth year given as 1827, which would likely make Mercy/Mercia a daughter of Anna and John vs. Mary Bunner and John; however, it is in conflict with several sources above.

CENSUS: 1910 West Virginia, Marion County Census; FRC, enum. 4 May 1910: "Nuzum, Ann, Head, 39, Wid, one child born, one living (?ble - the preceding was hard to read); Osha (?) E., dau, 20, single; Dessie L., dau, 24 or 21, single; Thornton M., father-in-law, 90, M1, 60; 'Mercia', mother-in-law, M1, 60??, had 7 children, 4 were living.  All born in West Virginia."  [Difficult to read where parents were born and age for Mercy.]  See H-28, #2.  QUESTION: To whom was Ann married?
