541. Nelson W. Carpenter

Nelson and two brothers, Dwight and Gilliam, documented as CSA, 39th Alabama Infantry, Company H; company is immediately dispatched to Mississippi where family tradition states Nelson died of measles and is buried.  Nelson leaves behind wife Amanda and two children.  These children both die and Amanda bears 4 additional children, but never remarries.  She continues to live on the Carpenter family farm and is reported to have been actively involved in church (Her father being the minister) and in community activities. In her diary she records the birth of each of the children, but no father.  Three of the children are rumored to belong to one of the living brothers, probably Dwight.   Brenda M. Carpenter James E. Carpenter

COMMENT:
Some of the births may have been informal adoptions approved by the Church for which Dwight was a father type figure to. There has been consideration that Dwight had given seed for his brother's inheritance in the Bibical format.  But one male Carpenter descendant  from Amanda Carpenter who Y-DNA tested does not have the Carpenter Y-DNA supporting the claim that the children were adopted in some manner.  JRC

NOTE:  See her 2nd "unmarried"  marriage for those 4 additional children that "she bears".

Amanda "Mandy" Danford

PARENTS:
Rev. William "Will" Danford (1817-1869)
Mary Josephine Herring (1825-1868)

MARRIAGE:  1860 - 1st marriage 2 children who die young.

MARRIAGE2:  Not married. Apparently she adopts 4 more children raising them as Carpenters during and just after the Civil War.  Her father is the part time town preacher or Deacon and the community supports her efforts.

A descendant (131752 - Group 98) of Marriage2 obviously does not have the Group 8 Carpenter Y-DNA, but the Y-DNA confirms the adoption story and NOT that the widow had more children by the brother of her dead husband. Otherwise the Y-DNA would match Group 8.

BUT she is claimed to be buried in the ...

These two cemeteries are about 100 miles distant from each other.
I now wonder if someone added the right people to the wrong cemetery?

Subject: Re: Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project
Good afternoon, John,
I hope your travels are safe and enjoyable. I’m attaching a scanned copy of the documents I retrieved from my old boxes, which include several details about my father’s siblings. The handwritten information was penned by my grandmother, Myrtle Myers Carpenter, in the late 90s or early 2000s. She passed in 2010 at the age of 93, but was still sharp as a tack mentally. Her notes are disorganized, but interesting. They also include information on her family (Myers and Sanders) which you may or may not find of any value.
One side note…. I don’t have all the details, but my grandfather (Samuel Jackson Carpenter) had children outside of his marriage with Myrtle. It seems that he may have had three or four nuclear family relationships, with children from at least two of those. The attached notes allude to that, but I don’t have confirmation on how those stories line up (e.g., whether they were extra-marital, or a prior marriage, etc.). And at some point later on, I’ll be glad to give you some relatively dramatic info about him that might make for interesting info in your records (please remind me to send you the Oklahoma papers and story).
At any rate, my grandfather’s children with Myrtle are outlined in detail on the first page of the attached. Feel free to scour the handwritten notes for any nuggets you might find useful or worthy of inclusion in your work. I’m still waiting for the results from FTDNA. So I think we’re on standby at this point until we get those.
Thanks, as always, for all your assistance.
Damon C
