DEATH:
Mrs. Myrtle Smith, of Leroy, WV, received a telegram from the War Department telling her that her husband, Pfc. Gaylord Smith, was killed in action in France on November 16. Relatives of the family said that he entered the service in December of last year and that he had been overseas for some time when he was killed. He married about a year before he entered the Army. He is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs. Henry Smith of Sandyville, a sister, Mrs. Aubrey Walter of Leroy, and his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Nuzum Smith, whom he married about a year before he entered the service.

Obituary, Jackson Herald:
Pfc. Gaylord O. Smith, son of Henry M. and Mersylla H. Smith, was born August 18, 1916, departed this life Nov. 16, 1944, aged 28 years, 2 months and 28 days. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Nuzum on Oct. 4, 1941. He entered the service Dec. 7, 1943 and arrived overseas in France Sept. 7, 1944. He was assigned to Company F., 2nd Battalion, 328th Infantry. He made the supreme sacrifice Nov. 16, 1944 in the battle for Metz, France.

He is survived by his wife, father, mother, one sister, Garnett Walter, and two nephews, Ronald and Jimmy Walter. Memorial services were conducted at the Fairview Methodist Church Saturday and he was laid to rest in the cemetery nearby. (Friday, 1 Oct 1948) *
