Death: Dec. 28, 2009 Floyd County Georgia, USA Reva Nance Carpenter, 95, of the Renaissance Marquis, 3126 Cedartown Hwy., Rome, GA, passed away Monday evening, Dec. 28, at a Rome hospital. Mrs. Carpenter was born in Ansonville, NC, on April 18, 1914, the daughter of the late Clarence Nance and Charlotte Covington Nance. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carson Reid Carpenter, on Dec. 24, 1974, and by one brother and one sister. Mrs. Carpenter was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church, having attended St. John's in Charlotte, NC, and St. Peter's in Rome, GA. She was a dedicated wife and mother and had lived in Rome since the late 1990s. She was also a member of the D.A.R. and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was well-known as a genealogist having contributed to two books and a third dedicated to her. Survivors include one son, Dr. Wade A. Carpenter, professor at Berry College in Rome, and his wife, Sara, Silver Creek, GA; one granddaughter, Susanna Carpenter and one grandson, Daniel Carpenter, both of Silver Creek. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 31, at 3 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Rome, with the Rev. Janice Bracken Wright officiating. Interment will be Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Historic Matthews Cemetery in Matthews, NC. In 1900 census listed as a daughter.  Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Carpenter: Couple
Celebrates 50th Anniversary: Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Carpenter celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, August 6th with open house at
their home near Oakalla. Hostesses for the affair were their children: Mr. and
Mrs. Guy V. Smith, Mrs. A.V. Dunlap, Mr. and Mrs Nolan E. Carpenter, and
Mr. Mrs. Dayton L. Carpenter. Grandchildren assisting included Mrs.
Milford Wiley, Mrs. Ronnda Adams, Deborah and Pam Carpenter, Pat
and Mike Carpenter who served cake and punch. Mrs. Jerry Beach presided at
the guest book. Mrs Ronnie Doss invited guest in to see the gifts which
were displayed from the dinner table with which her grandparents started
keeping house. Guest also enjoyed seeing pictures made fifty years
ago. The serving table was laid with a hand-made gold net cloth over yellow.
The centerpiece was of gold and white mums. The white wedding cake was
decorated with white doves, yellow roses, and sugar bells topped
with a golden metallic "50". The couple have made Burnet  their home
during their entire married life except for approximately two years which
was spent in Lampasas . They have lived on their place over-looking
the Lampasas River near Oakalla for the past thirty-six years. For
the occasion Mr. Carpenter wore a tie clasp  given him fifty years ago
by his bride and she wore the golden wedding band which he placed on her
finger fifty years ago.  They had thirteen grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. The one hundred and twenty-five guest who called
during the afternoon included friends and relatives fron Doniphan,
MO, Clovis, NM, Artesia, NM, Los Angeles California, Copperas Cove, San
Saba, San Antonio, Lampasas, Lometa, Killeen, Austin, Briggs and Kempner.
Mr. Carpenter is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dick Carpenter.
He had eight brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Carpenter, the former Mary Pearl Kincaid, was one of five children
whose parents were the late Mr. and Mrs Ed Kincaid. All of her brothers
and sisters were present Sunday to help them celebrate. They were
married August 5th 1917 by Rev. Watson, a Methodist preacher, at the time
holding a revival in Oakalla. The preacher met them on the road and they
stood beside their horse drawn buggy for the ceremony. Mr. Carpenter
remembers that they started farming then with one cow, two horses, one pig, a
dozen chickens and approximately $30 cash.
A carpenter by name and trade, he also recalls doing hard carpenter labor
all day for the small fee of one dollar and fifty cents. At one time he
built a whole house in return for one horse valued at fifty-four dollars.
