CARPENTER, Michael, son of Samuel Carpenter, was born September 22nd, 1796, in Warwick township, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. He removed with his father to Lancaster, in 1807, and learned the business of a turner. Becoming involved in speculative enterprises in which he

met with heavy losses, he turned his attention to the writing of deeds and other instruments of legal transactions ; in a word, he became a scrivener. In this career he seemed to have found the business for which he was best fitted ; and in the year 18^3 he was elected Mayor of the city of Lancaster, and by successive reelections continued to fill this oflBce up to 1852. In stature, unlike his father, he was not corpulent, but rather of a spare build. He was of a feeble rather than of a robust constitution. In disposition he was kind and gentle, yet grave and serene in his demeanor. He was a man of a high order of integrity and moral worth, and a devoted and humble Christian. He was of industrious and steady habits, and devoted himself sedulously and constantly to business until overtaken by disease (pulmonary consumption), which caused his death, August 5th, 1861.

THE ANCESTRY OF JOHN C. CARPENTER
Preface:
These are the facts discovered that permit a conclusion that John C. Carpenter is the son of Christian Carpenter Jr., son of Christian Carpenter Sr., son of Gabriel Carpenter, son of Henrich Carpenter * who changed his name from Zimmerman to Carpenter at the request of William Penn. * (The Immigrant)

THE FACTS:

1. The cemetery records of the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick Md. reads as follows:- John C. Carpenter, b. 16 Jan. 1808., Lancaster Pa., d. 20 July 1880, Frederick Md. The pertinent facts here are that John C. Carpenter was born in Lancaster in the year of 1808 !

2. John C's second son was named Mark Connell Carpenter. I have, a circa 1850 map of West Earl Township, of Lancaster County and it shows that the property of Christian Carpenter Jr. adjoins that of Mark Connell Esq. and thus locates the "homeplace" of John C. near the location of the Carpenter Church which is located on the property of Christian Carpenter- Jr.

3.The Herr family intermarried frequently with the Carpenters. (Christian Carpenter Sr. married Susan Herr) I have a copy of the listing cf' the Christian Carpenter Jr. family as it appears in the Herr family genealogy; as follows:-
Children of Christian Carpenter Jr. and Mary Carpenter:  **
     1. Levi                                   8. Charles
      2. Lucy                                  9. Paul b. 1810, d. 1880
      3. CharIes                            10. William b. 1812, d.. 1875
      4. Isreal                                11. Sarah
      5. Gabriel, b. 1801, d, 1881 12. (a daughter)
      6. Mary                                13. Francis
     7. Elizabeth
(Note the two boys named Charles) .

While dates are sparse, it is very fortunate that the dates of birth for Paul and William do appear for, if you substitute John Charles (John C.) for No. 8 "Charles" and add John C's birthdate of 1808, it becomes obvious that our John C. fits into this family exactly1 . Mark Connell Carpenter named his first son"Charles" which is in keeping with the German custom of naming the eldest son after the father's father. I attribute the "John" preceding the "Charles" to the desire of No. 3 Charles to distinguish him, self from the No. 3 Charles that, presumably, died young: The premature death is an assumption and an alternate possibility will be discussed later.

5. In the 1850 census of Lancaster Co— there is a John Carpenter listed along witth his wife Margaret, but there is no Charles listed!

6. John Charles's brother Gabriel married Matilda Connell !

CONCLUSION:-
JOHN C. CARPENTER (cont.) Page 2 of 2.

The above six facts. listed, lead me to the conclusion that John C. Carpenter is in fact the son of Christian Carpenter Jr. of Earlville (now Talmadge) Pa.

There is also the possibility that along the way, some Historians misread his notes and mistook his abbreviation of the name Christian for the abbreviation of Charles. It is my observation that documents of the period 1800 to 1690 frequently abbreviated given names of men to a single letter or a pair of letters followed by a small underlined letter which was the ending letter of the name. ie:

Jacob = Jb (J with an supercript b)
John = Jn  (J with an supercript n)
Michael = Ml  (M with an supercript l)
Abraham = Abm (Ab with an supercript m)
David = Dd (D with an supercript d)
Christian = Chn (Ch with an supercript n)
Charles = Cha (Ch with an supercript a)

I contend that Chn could easily be misread for Cha thus allowing for two boys named Charles instead of one named Charles and one named Christian. I lean toward accepting the former reasoning and am hereby changing my pedigree to list my Great Grandfather as John Charles Carpenter, son of Christian Jr, son of Christian Sr, bon of Gabriel, son of Heinrich Zimmerman, the immigrant.

** Mary Carpenter, wife of Christian Carpenter Jr., was a daughter of Emanuel Carpenter II and as such, was a second cousin to her husband.
