ARTICLE: by Jesse Carpenter
Catherine - Part 1
The research into Catherine E. Carpenter cited by the 1850 Census began way-back in the year 2012…
The time between the birth of the United States and up to the year 1850 about 75 years, researching into
the ancestry of women during this period especially married woman, usually uncovered very little except
maybe, if lucky, a biographical sketch from a secondary source. With the 1850 United States Census and
thereafter, every ten years, all household members were recorded along with the head of household. The
Census is considered the primary genealogical record of families in the United States. The dilemma while
trying to uncover any of their ancestors within the first 30 years after 1850 would give the same results.
The search would place the ancestors in the same time period before 1850 again uncovering very little.
Forty years after 1850 would have given better results but research is further frustrated by not having the
1890 Census where many of the population schedules were badly damaged by fire in the Commerce
Department Building in January 1921. The years 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 skipping 1890 to 1900 have
limited the search yet despite these limitations, there are other methods that would broaden the search.
The final task interweaving fragmented genealogy becomes open to argument distinguished as unworthy

graphic

The focus of this article is centered around the family of David Carpenter. The Carpenter lineage from
James Carpenter was his son John and then his grandson David. David was born on 8 April 1809
approximately along the line joining Anthony and Woodward Townships of Lycoming County,
Pennsylvania. He was the son of John Carpenter and Mary Campbell. He married Mare Ware (alternate
spellings Wehr, Weir, …) on 2 August 1832 in Jersey Shore, Lycoming, Pennsylvania. , , , She died 3 4 5 6
before 1836. David and Mary had a single child, a son, Jesse J. Carpenter who was born 19 May 1833. In 7
11 February 1836, David married Racheal Mitcheltree. She died 29 August 1880.

The name Catherine is easily seen listed in the 1850 Census of Porter Township. She was listed as the 8
daughter of David Carpenter and maybe the daughter of Rachael Mitcheltree. David married twice, first to
Mary Ware and then to Rachael Mitcheltree.
Why did David’s first wife Mary die so soon into her marriage? One might conclude surely
questionable yet plausible that Mary died while giving birth to a second child. It was not like she
could be rushed to a hospital to give birth not until the first hospital in Williamsport opened in
1878. Natural birth at home was the normal event and it was often supported by the family. The
father was helpless by the chaotic scene of his pregnant wife, screaming during labor, not being
able to console her pains. Therefore the call went out without hesitation, ringing the bell if you
will, for assistance that would summon the local midwives. Midwives provided assistance often
requested to assist childbearing woman during pregnancy especially during labor and birth even

assisting weeks after childbirth. Mary called for help but maybe, it was too late. Catherine born

Rachael on the other hand, one might go as far to assume that she was rescued from a fate
forever marked as a fallen woman. The term was often used in 1850. The public gossip often
heard to shame women with children born out of wedlock (or worse, morally ruined as subjects
of immoral men). Because David honored Rachael in marriage, whether or not who she once
was, Rachael was an exemplary wife and good mother.

The early customs of Colonial America were carved out by the constant struggle to survive. The
frontier families were guided by the hearthside discourse on the consequence of sin and the
benefit of virtue. The Book was often used to instill the virtuous path. Temptations were avoided
once common of the old ways of the public house. Their liberty was embraced in the patriarchal
heart of men. Once commoners were now guardians of their own land. The ruthless trials were
accepted for the sake of their beloved homes for its cradle within the protected realm of women.
No one argued their given role or responsibility within the family unit. The consequences were
all to clear in their daily lives.

Without evidence, the assumptive arguments such as these about Mary or Rachael in genealogy
are undeserving to the living descendants. Nonetheless, assumptions are created maybe not
intentionally but created from interpretations garnished from fragmented events. Over time,
such false hypothesis clearly biased might be interpreted as truth. How could anyone argue
otherwise for example when information is taken from family trees shared by others.

Many times these publicly copied trees are used as the starting point. For whatever reason, the
original authors come and go and yet their original versions are copied and passed on to others.
This type of research is typical from internet genealogical warehouses. Although the family tree
hints are mostly reliable, they are often used as a starting point in research. As such, starting
points are necessary when searching for allied families which cannot be uncovered otherwise.
Although public family trees might convey someone else's information, they are initially created
with information by those who know more about their own families than anyone else. This
method is used to piece together copied family trees that branches into theirs like puzzle pieces.
A method that saves months if not years of research. It seems that many of the public trees from
the internet genealogical warehouse agree that Catherine E. as cited from the 1850 Census is the
biological daughter of the family of David Carpenter.

The histories of the Ware family and the Mitcheltree family goes far back to Colonial America.
Unfortunately, the research has been unsuccessful in uncovering the ancestors of either Mary
Ware or the ancestors of Rachael Mitcheltree. The point here without any hint of their ancestry,
uncovering Catherine’s past becomes much more difficult. Thus Mary, Rachael including
Catherine are considered brick-walls because ancestral documents do not exist beyond brickwalls
and sadly, these three brick-walls all exist in the family of David Carpenter.

Genealogical connections are important. They come from primary documents like the United
States Census. These records are published every ten years and are often used for researching
family trees. Beginning with the 1850 Census, the names and ages of everyone in the household
were recorded. Before then, only the names of head of households were recorded from 1790 up

to 1840. Although knowing the names of head of households are helpful, uncovering
information for the family members before 1850 was impossible. For both Mary and Rachael,
there were no ancestral connections to be found from these earlier documents.
An alternative for uncovering family connections are recorded as vital information kept in the
family Bibles. Another was the published genealogical records often sold as subscriptions. Sadly,
many of these documents are few in number and in most cases the family Bibles were rarely
shared and often lost over time.

Without the Family Bible and other similar documents of genealogical connections, the other
option is to try connecting bits and pieces together from the other pages of the United States
Census. Searching through the 1850 Census in the surrounding townships listing for the same
family names in question in the hope something might surface. This takes time and the work is
tedious. The uncertainty might increase as the search moves away from Lycoming into the
surrounding counties. In the most likelihood after hours of work there might be nothing of value
worth using from such a search.

Such an argument made from tying together bits and pieces will most likely be considered
unworthy, an assumptive conclusion biased at the author's will. At this point, the opinions of
others are of little consequence. The author has decided to move forward risking his time and
effort. The effort to publish in the hope a distant relative, or anyone with knowledge, reading the
article from the internet might comment on the troubling subject.

In Catherine -Part 2, the author jumps directly into the mess of data…

ARTICLE:  by Jesse Carpenter
Catherine - Part 2
The household of David Carpenter is listed in the Potter Township Lycoming County
Pennsylvania Census dated 8 August 1850. Listed was David age 43 and his wife Rachael age 41.
The children listed were Catherine E. age 16, Priscilla J. age 14, John J. age 12, Joseph L. age 10,
Levi T. age 8 and finally Elsie A. age 5. Catherine was listed as the oldest child, it has been
assumed she was the child of David and Rachael. The number of children contradicts the 1883
record that David and Rachael only had five children. 1

David was born 8 April 1809 somewhere near the borderline between Anthony and Woodward
Townships in Lycoming County Pennsylvania. In 1850 living in Potter Township, he was serving
as the Constable, a peace officer of Potter Township.

Catherine was visiting the residence of David and Rachael Carpenter in 1850 most likely because
her husband in all seriousness was searching for assistance for his pregnant wife hence why
Catherine came in contact with Constable Carpenter. A child, a wife and maybe a daughter,
Catherine was pregnant.

Catherine Ellen Mitcheltree was her full name who had the same maiden name as Rachael
although for Rachael, it might be from a previous marriage. She may be related to the family but
researching women during this period uncovered very little as previously mentioned in Part 1.
Was Catherine there because she needed support from her family or was it because she needed
experienced women, a safe environment, to help delivery her unborn child.

The household of Joseph Ritchey is listed in Chapman Township Clinton County Pennsylvania
Census dated 17 October 1850. Listed was Joseph age 25 and his wife Catherine age 19. The 2
children listed were Jane age 1 and David age 3 months. On the same page as Joseph is his
father Edward the farmer and Edward’s family. Joseph’s older brother William was born one
mile west of Ferney’s run where he was actively engaged in lumbering operations, an implication
that the homestead of the entire family was on and around Ferney’s run. The Grugan township 3
was formed in 1851, and was taken from territory in Colebrook Township and Chapman
Township. The township is divided into two nearly equal parts by the West Branch Susquehanna
River. Therefore the Ritchey homestead sits along the Susquehanna river in Grugan Township.
The 1860 Census for Joseph and Catherine exemplifies Grugan Township.4

map

The evidence shows that any person like Catherine could be at two locations while the census
was taken. The two locations were the neighboring Clinton and Lycoming counties. Catherine
and her husband traveled from Grugan Township to Potter Township looking for assistance. As
indicated, township boundary lines often change during the early history of many counties in
Pennsylvania. The map shows where the Ritchey family lived and most likely, the lumber maker
Joseph took his wife on a river boat to avoid road travel or by railroad. If the railroad did not
exist near Ferney’s run then the remaining option was horse and buggy.5

The Chapman Township census was enumerated on 17 October 1850 approximately 3 months
apart from the Porter Township Census. Interestingly the Chapman Township Census shows
that her son David was born at the age of 3 months. Catherine gave birth to her son David at the
home of David and Rachael Carpenter.

She was the daughter of John C. Mitcheltree and Mary Ann Hevner of Clinton County
Pennsylvania. Catherine was born about 1832 in Clinton County. She married Joseph Ritchie
about 1849 around the date when their first child was born.

The focus of this article is about the family of David Carpenter and by solving the mystery of
Catherine might help to uncover other genealogies of Mary Ware and Rachael Mitcheltree.
Searching through the family connections finally uncovered her younger brother George W.
Mitcheltree which in turn uncovered their parents. The search started with the children of 6
David and Rachael. Luckily, this was the next child, Priscilla, listed under Catherine in the 1850
census. So using Ancestry’s family trees and their images of their census records, the family
connections to discovery was from Priscilla, to George, and then the parents. Catherine was
listed as the older sister of George. Many in the 1850 census documents had the needed
information for the search but anything before then was impossible. For example. in the 1840
census and before, the only name listed was the head of household.

George W. Mitcheltree married Priscilla Jane Carpenter daughter of David J. Carpenter and
Rachael Mitcheltree about 1856. They had 13 children yet oddly the Mitcheltree family was not 7
entered into the genealogical record of the Descendants of John and Elizabeth Campbell. The
only surname Mitcheltree recorded under the family of David Carpenter was Priscilla’s mother
Rachael. Was this to protect known ties to other Mitcheltree families or to protect Rachael
herself. The given name Priscilla on the other hand had both dismal and joyful significance for
David Carpenter.

David was the Constable, a peace officer of Potter Township and maybe a good husband and
father. He wanted to protect his family. David named his daughter after his sister, Priscilla Jane
Carpenter. David’s sister married John Pepperman and sadly many of their 12 children had died
at an early age. On the other hand, the children of George and Priscilla went on to live into their 8
adulthood.

David was 2 years older than his sister. She was seventeen when she married John. David had
experienced both the tragedy and sadness of his sister’s life. Four years later after Priscilla and
John married, David married his first wife in 1832. Mary Ware had one child, Jesse J. Carpenter
who was born in 1833. Soon after the birth of Jesse, Mary died. Sad how Jesse never had the
chance to know his mother and the consequential affect it had on David. In 1836, David
remarried Rachael Mitcheltree in February of that same year. The events in one’s life, although
not obvious, can shape a person’s constitution. David seemed to direct the entire family, and his
wife Rachael most likely knew David as caring but hard. Catherine although mistakenly
identified as his daughter, he took care of her whether she was family or stranger.

The family of David Carpenter is complicated and still difficult to untangle, yet with the one
question unraveled as to who Catherine was, the other women in David’s life, Mary and Rachael
still remain a mystery.

An accident occurred near Glen Union last evening by which Joseph Ritchey and Lloyd Peck, employees of the railroad company were severely injured.  The men were on a hand car together with an Italian laborer who was turning the crank.  The Italian's dinner pail dropped over and was about to fall off the car when he reached for it and was struck on the head by the crank.  He was knocked against Ritchey and Peck by the blow and they both fell off the car, the wheels of which passed over them.  Dr. Hayes amputated one of Ritchey's arms near the elbow.  Peck was considerably cut and bruised but had no bones broken.  The Italian who caused all the trouble escaped without any serious injury.

Obituary transcript from the Lock Haven Express, September 14, 1908:
An Aged War Veteran Stricken on Saturday
G. W. Mitcheltree died in Williamsport in a Few Hours After Stroke
George W. Mitcheltree, of Williamsport, a brother-in-law of L. T. Carpenter of this city, died very suddenly Saturday evening at 8:30 o'clock in Williamsport.  He had been in excellent health, apparently, and in the best of spirits when he was suddenly stricken between 2 and 3 o'clock in the afternoon by paralysis.  The stroke proved to be a fatal one.  Mr. Mitcheltree never regaining consciousness.
The deceased was a Civil War veteran, having served in Co. C, Two Hundred and Seventh Penn's volunteers.  He was aged 75 years, 4 months and 17 days.  He leaves a wife and the following children:  David P., Randolph, Miles, Edward, James and Cordie of Williamsport, Archie of Avis, Millard of McElhattan; Mrs. William Harmon of Loganton.  He is also survived by five brothers and two sisters; Ross, Adam, Newton, Saul and John Mitcheltree.  Adeline and Mrs. Annabelle Williams.  The deceased was born near Whetham, Clinton county in 1833, and had been a resident of Williamsport nearly nine years.
The funeral services will be held at Pine Station Tuesday afternoon.  The remains may be viewed at the late residence Tuesday between 9 and 10 a.m.  Short services will be held at the house previous to leaving for Pine on the New Express.
∼Cause of Death Stroke.
Georgw W. Mitcheltree enlisted as a private in Company C, 207 Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on August 11, 1864.  He was honorably discharged on May 31, 1865.  Prior to enlisting, George was a sound and healthy man, free from any chronic diseases.  At one point he worked for Jacob Quiggle of Wayne Township, Clinton County, and Jacob said that he was one of his best men at making lumber.  An affidavit by Eli Henninger stated that George also worked in the woods, in a stone quarry, and did farm work.  His military record shows that he was 31 years of age at his enlistment.  He was light complexioned, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had black hair and blue eyes.
On December 14th or 15th, 1864, while stationed near Hancock Station, Virginia, he was detailed to guard cattle and compelled to lay out all night without proper clothing and shelter.  As a result of the inclement weather and his exposure at that time, he took sick and laid in the field hospital for seven days.  He was then removed to City Point, Virginia, for five days, and then to Lincoln Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he remained between four and five weeks.  He was then returned to his regiment on March 11, 1865, but was unfit for duty.  He was ranked a corporal at the time of his discharge and he never recovered from his illnesses.  In March 1881, he was dropped from the pension rolls as not disabled in a pensionable degree from alleged bronchitis.  Friends and distinguished citizens from the township came to his defense.

George's name is on a pillar in the middle of Linnwood Cemetery, McElhattan, Pennsylvania that was once one of the columns which enclosed the front porch of the old capitol building in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania in 1820. The column was removed in June 1898 and erected in Linnwood Cemetery May 12, 1900 as a memorial to the soldiers of Wayne Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania who served in various wars. The wars listed on the column are The War of 1865, War of the Great Rebellion, World War I, World War II, and The Gulf War. It lists the names of those soldiers from Wayne Township that fought in those wars.

CHAPTER XLVIII.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES.
Page 903 of 1365 pages. CITY OF WILLIAMSPORT AND BOROUGH OF SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT.
JOSEPH R. CARPENTER, of the firm of Carpenter Brothers Manufacturers of emery and corundum wheels, was born in Anthony township, Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, April 4, 1849. He is a son of Jesse B. and Phoebe (Carpenter) Carpenter of Piatt township, Lycoming county, and grandson of John Carpenter, a native of this county, and great-grandson of William Carpenter, who came from England during the Revolutionary war as a soldier in the army of Cornwallis, and subsequently settled in Lycoming county. The subject of this sketch was educated in the schools ,of Anthony township, where his father and grandfather lived, and subsequently took a course at the Montoursville Normal School. He followed agriculture until 1884, .and then engaged in the manufacture of emery wheels at Linden, under the firm name of Stone & Carpenter. At the end of two years Mr. Stone retired, and the present firm of Carpenter Brothers was organized. They moved their plant to Williamsport in 1891, and it is the only firm of the kind in this part of the State. Mr. ,Carpenter was married in 1873 to Emma E., daughter of John McLaughlin of Piatt township, and has three children: Jessie V.; Mack B., and J. Craig. He is a Democrat, and is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.

COMMENT AND WARNING:
The best documentation we have of the great grandfather of Joseph R. Carpenter-124532 is the name James with one mention of William as cited above. We assume William is a typo. But when you add the question about Patriot or Loyalist it appears more likely as bad genealogy.  Combining the two names William and James into one composite is wrong and causes more confusion for those unaware. OR we have two different families regarding what the Y-DNA is telling us. JRC
