Hi John: I am ready to send you some suggested corrections, some back-up for
my work including Amos B. Carpenter Memorial appropriate pages, and the
short and long forms of my branch of the Carpenters of Rehoboth. However, I
do not have your street address, for mailing purposes, in La Mesa. Could you
please email it to me..thanks.
I agree with your comment that"it appears that several families are jammed
together" starting with Increase Carpenter b. 1688 (#44 in AB Carpenter
Memorial),in Jamaica, LI. My ggggg-great grandfather. I had this
straightened out once, but will need time to go back again. Anyway, Increase
born about 1704 is NOT his son!! His son is Increase (AB Carpenter #135),
born either 1743 or 1736, Jamaica, LI. This Increase is my(gggg-great)
direct descendant. He is the one who owned the tavern made "famous" at the
start of the Revolutionary War. His son was George (#325) my ggg, his son
was William G. (#677) my gg and his daughter was Mary Matilda Carpenter, my
great-grandmother, who has been left out of the genealogy. She died just
before I was born in 1929.
Increase #135 lived most of his life in Jamaica, except for the war, when
his family fled to Dutchess County, N.Y. I know of no connection to Maine.
The succession is as Amos B. states, William b.1605, John #17 b.1626, John
#24 b.1658, Increase #77 b.1688, Increase #135 b.1736/1743, George #325
b.1774, William G. #677 b.1811, Mary Matilda (to be added), Arthur J.
Chapman (my grandfather to be added)b.1878, Florence Chapman Haslun(my
mother to be added) and William A. Haslun (me-to be added).
George Carpenter #325, married Martha Puntine in 1794. I have that family's
Bible. It is quite old and fragile. I have transcribed the pages of births
and deaths including some notes, on marriage and children, exactly as it is
written. (I will include this in my package to you).It appears to move from
the Puntines to the George Carpenters and to have ended up in the hands of
Mary Matilda Carpenter Chapman which is how I come to have it in my
possession. I have duplicated it with spelling etc. as it appears. You might
find some of this of interest. At least I will try to clear up the "jamming
of families" situation if you will put my branch in your project. I didn't
do an awful lot with the non-direct descendants, but where I can, I will
take a look for the good of the cause.
Yours in good spirits and goodwill,
Bill Haslun

GGGGG - Benjamin Wiggins, Jr. was born 1702 in Jamaica, Long Island, NY, attended Grace Episcopal Church (first 4 children baptised there), moved to Newburgh area by 1734 and he died 9-17-1776, buriel unknown (may be Grace Church cemetery, Jamaica, NY), but is probably near Newburgh. He married Rachel in 1722, most likely in Hempstead, her surname unknown. Benjamin Wiggins supposedly received a land grant consisting of 850 aces of land from the Indians on the Hudson River in New York State.

69. John Carpenter 3rd

Number 74 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 61.
Family is number 42 on page 82.   He resided at Goshen,Orange County, NY.

He was called John the Sheriff, to distinguish him from others by the name of
John.  He served as sheriff for the county of Orange in NY at one time.
After he died, his wife, Ruth married a Thurston. and probably kept the records
of her family.
He bought land of his father in 1704 or 1705.  He exchanged land in 1706 and
sold it to his brother Joseph in 1714, a 20 acre lot.
In the history of Orange County, we find that on July 10, 1721, John Everett,
John Carpenter 2d., and John Carpenter 3d. Jr., and others gave a deed of land
in trust to lay out a Presbyterian church, cemetery, parsonage and streets, and
in all about 140 acres.  In 1895, the Presbyterian church celebrated its 175
year.  The name of Carpenter in Goshen since 1721 has appeared to be very
numerous.

MARRIAGE:  Possibly two marriages. One to a Ruth, maiden name unknown and the other to Ruth Coe.  Severmith does not distnguish between the two Ruths. They may be the same person, or they may not.  I am listing two marriages now for this John Carpenter.  Hoepfully further research will reveal more details.

Per page 83, "Increase was executor of his father's (John) will of May 1,
1738, and settled his estate."  Children were born into the 1750s per the
Carpenter Memorial.  He married Ruth Coe in 1735, but children are listed to
him born about 1720.  This indicates another marriage.
Whoever were the first settlers of Goshen, NY, it is beyond all question that
this John (#74) and his brother, Solomon (#75), the grandsons of John (#17),
were among the first.

A Patriot, served in Dutchess County Militia Associated Exempts.

Subject: Check out Supreme Court i.e. Coe
Well, well, lookie here.  Hezekiah (?) Woodruff and Benjamin Coe!  Remember (according to the best info we have, i.e. Carpenter Memorial)
1.  Our Moses Carpenter was the son of   John and Ruth (Coe) Carpenter.
2.  Our Moses had a brother John
3.  John's widow married Heziah Woodruff
4.  John had a son named John Coe Carpenter (if memory serves me right)
This is the closest I have been to a record of a Coe and a Carpenter (connection of some sort, that is!).
Think I will see if and how you get a copy of that record.

Subject: Ruth Coe?
Margaret,
I wonder if you are still chasing our Ruth.
Today on Ancestry I found a website that names Ruth Coe to be the daughter of Joseph Coe and ________ Wheeler, this Joseph is the father of a Joseph who goes to Morris Co. and whose daughter Ruth married Dickerson................
That is Ruth who married John Carpenter is the aunt of Ruth who married Dickerson in Morris Co.
My fool computer pooped out so I lost the site, but am sure I can find it again................this is the most promising clue I have ever seen......................furthermore, further down the tree the Coes marry into my Wisner descendants family..........
OK, will try to find it again.
Love,
Phoebe

in the ownership of land in Wawayanda and gave, with others 100 acres to the
first settled minister in the county.  He is often confused with his cousin
"Col. Solomon Carpenter" (son of John C. of John C.) of Goshen, NY.
Captain Solomon Carpenter, of Jamacia, LI was one of the first settlers of
Orange county: lived west of Goshen and sold land to John Carpenter of Jamacia,
LI in 1715, and to his son John in the same year.  In his will he directed that
the negro children be taught the Catechism and to read the Bible.  He was an
able man and one of great enterprise.

BIRTH: Born 1686 but corrected (pg. 833) to 1712 in the Carpenter Memorial.
HOWEVER Col. Solomon was dealing in Goshen real estate in the early 1720s
indicating he was older than 20 thus born before 1700 - the 1686/1690
birth years is a better guess.
DEATH:  Died 1772 but corrected (pg. 833) to 1792 in the Carpenter Memorial. WRONG! This is for another!
WILL:
WRONG!  This is for Ens. Solomon Carpenter the son!
Will was dated 30 Sep 1779 and proven 30 Jul 1794.   He was a Colonel (no - he was an Ensign) in the Militia. Children per the will: Michael, William, Benjamin, James, Nehemiah and a daughter named Hannah.  Wife named Elinor.
DEATH:
WRONG! See above!
7 July 1792 but recorded as 7 July 176(9)2 in Raymond George Carpenter's
update on the Carpenter line. (CRFHJ serial)  Why the delay between death and
the will being proved is unknown.

This Solomon was the first to settle in Goshen.  He was a Lt. Col. with the
Goshen Colonials in 1738.

In the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Dec 20, 1896 is the story of heirlooms
from the 1700s found in the Goshen house of Solomon (and then James)
Carpenter. These artifacts and documents are prominently mentioned in
Bachelor and Carpenter's "Ancestors and Descendants of Col Solomon Carpenter."
At the time of the Daily Eagle story, the house was in the hands of Mrs.
Mary Peloubet and her daughter Miss Fannie Peloubet, formerly of Greene
Avenue in Brooklyn (NY).  Does anyone here know what became of them?  Have
the letters and documents been copied or recorded anywhere?  Did these
nPeloubets have descendants, and were some materials passed to them?  What's
the scoop?
Robin

NOTE: There are two similar or duplicate lines involving the descendants of Solomon Carpenter.  Either the Ensign (RIN 13186) or the Colonel (RIN 4738) - Solomon Carpenter that is.  Notes have been made where duplication has been noted.  Until further research proves which descendants went with which Solomon, I will keep such markers.  JRC 1/2004  MERGED 2/2013 JRC

Dear Cousins,
I received this interesting e-mail from a gal who is trying to identify her Wm. Wisner who was in
Onondaga co at the same time our James Wisner and Moses Carpenter families were.  Have not printed
it out yet to compare with what I have, but see it involves folks that I have never heard about so thought I
would run it by you to see if you see any associations that might be helpful.  I do not quite understand
why it lists only Moses and Nehemiah as sons of John and Ruth (Coe) Carpenter.  Have not asked the
gal who sent it to me where she got it.  But she is descended from Wisner/Bagdley.

Elizabeth Albertson

E-MAIL: Tue, 8 Feb 2000 From: Robin Carpenter
I posit (concurring with RGC and Batchelor in ADCSC) that the Elizabeth ABC
refers to is Elizabeth Albertson, who married Nehemiah in 1750.  Here's one
reference (other than ADCSC p.32):
"Elizabeth Albertson, the daughter of widow Mary, `at her house'
married Nehemiah Carpenter of Jamaica November 15, 1750.  Mary and
Elizabeth's marriages are recorded in the Cutchogue Church records." --
Virginia Wines, "Pioneers of Riverhead Town"
Unless we have another Nehemiah to ascribe to this marriage, this must be
Nehemaih #73, and Elizabeth must be his second wife.  This Elizabeth is
barely an adult (she was a minor when her father William Albertson died, Mar
26 1749), so could not possibly be the mother of Nehemiah #293.
Robin.

76. Hope Carpenter Jr.

Number 82 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 61
Family is number 45 on page 85.
It appears that the family left Jamacia about the time or soon after the father
died as land was sold there in Jamacia, that fomerly belonged to Hope Carpenter
deceased in 1721.  And Joseph Carpenter bought land that formerly belonged to
Capt. John Carpenter (the 1st), which he gave by will to his son Hope in 1718.
Hope or his father, sold land at 12 different times from 1699 to 1712.
From 1681 to 1688 there was one birth and one burial in the family of Hope
Carpenter.  Hope, Sr. and Hope, Jr. bought land at White Plains, NY July 5,
1700.  Hope, Jr. and Elizabeth his wife sold this land April 8, 1715.
It appears that he had his portion of his father's estate as he went along, as
the will states: "I give my son Hope, 5 shillings, because I have done so much
for him already."
His residence was in Elizabethtown, NJ, in 1720: he probably moved there about
1712.  The rest of the family went to Hopewell, near Burlington, NJ.

SOURCES: Page 86, New Jersey, Wilk, Calendar of Wills, New Jersey Archives,
First Series, Vol. 30, and the Carpenter Memorial by Amos Bugbee Carpenter.

CHILDREN:  Estimated birth dates for children were once based on that of Thomas as being the first born.  Apparently that was in error, he was probably near end in births.  JRC 2/2004

(HI) Albert, son of Johannes Opdyck, was born at Dutch Kills, New York, about 1685, died at Maidenhead, New Jersey, 1752. His will, made May 7, 1752, was probated Au- gust, 1752. He resided the greater part of his life in Hopewell township. New Jersey, although removing to ^laidenhead a short time before his death. He is of special inter- io86 NEW YORK. est because he alone of all the immediate descendants of the original Opdyck settlers retained the Opdyck spelling, which the others changed to Updike. Albert's four sons are then the ancestors of all the Opdyckes, Op- dykes and Obdykes in the United States. He, however, departed from the family religious faith and became a member of the Llaptist church. His wife was named Elizabeth. Chil- dren : I. !BIRTH: Usher had 11 Aug 1689, but Amos B. Carpenter in the Carpenter Memorial
was unable to confirm this and gives about 1691.

By his father's will, land was given him and his two brothers Hezekiah and
John in Hopewell, NJ.  The estate of Hope Carpenter, Sr. was settled by John
Muirhead of Hopewell, late deceased May 13, 1713.  By this it appears that his
son Hope, Jr. had nothing to do with the settlement of his father's estate; as
it seems he had been fully paid his share of the estate before his father made
his will.

BIRTH: Birth date per James Usher.  Amos B. Carpenter of the Carpenter
Memorial (1898) was unable to confirm the birth date.
SEE: Genealogical and Historical Record of the Carpenter Family, by James Usher
Page 30 regarding The Carpenter Family of Long Island and NY.

MARRIAGE: Two marriages to "Ashman" Carpenter are given.  One shows the Usher
line and the other, the more correct "Carpenter Memorial" lineage.

NAME: Per Usher, Lucy's last name was "Amelia." However, per the Carpenter
Memorial, it was her middle name.  Both are given for researchers.

Two families merged together in the CM.  Corrective notes and further research
indicate the listing herein is correct.

Per PA Marriages before 1699, page 278:
1743, May 2. Carpenter, John, and Sarah Driver, area II.

He made his will 1 Oct. 1744: it was admitted to probate 2 Apr 1745.
He paid a tax in Hopewell on 90 acres of land in 1722 and in 1731 was one of
the subscribers for the purchase of a parsonage for the pastor of the
Presbyterian church of what is now Lawrence and Hopewell.  This does not refer
to the village of Hopewell, but the township of Hopewell.
We find a John Carpenter, probably a son of the above named John, a subscriber
to the pastor's salary in 1769.  We find another John Carpenter, probably a
grandson of the first named John who resided in Pennington and kept a hotel
there between 1820 and 1830.  He married the daughter of Joseph M. Phillips of
Hopewell;  He died probably about 1835;  He had a daughter who married a
Beknan;  He was also Township clerk and a member of the Township Commmittee in
1820 and 1822.  This is no doubt the same John Carpenter who kept the hotel at
Pennington.  The Committee met at his house.  The old hotel is still standing
at Pennington (in 1898).

Phoebe,
This would have been John5, son of Hope4 Carpenter of Jamaica, Long Island (John3, William2 of Rehoboth). (You may have noticed the name John Titus in the same list. All the Tituses except John2 and Abigail (Carpenter) Titus left Rehoboth for Long Island about 1655, as did John3 Carpenter.)
Hope Carpenter's will mentions property at Hopewell, New Jersey; his son John (b. ca. 1693) died there "about the spring of 1745. His will, dated 1 October 1744, was proved 2 April 1745 (New Jersey Archives 30, Calendar of Wills, p. 86, Liber 5, p. 114). He married Mary Hart, daughter of Captain Ralph Hart" (Herbert F. Seversmith, Colonial Families of Long Island, New York and Connecticut, Being the Ancestry & Kindred of Herbert Furman Seversmith, 5 vols. [Washington, D.C., 1939–1958], 2:545–46). Ralph Hart is also on your list.
The center of Elmhurst (formerly Newto[w]n) is no more than five miles from that of Jamaica; as townships, they were probably adjacent.

Do any of you know who this John Carpenter was?

Susanna Christina Bradner

DOB is 1713 at sea to America with parents ; DOD is Mar 3, 1809.  Last name is Bradner not Bradnor.

Another little tidbit about Susanna Bradner ---- her full name was Susanna Christina Bradner AND in her mothers testament she is called Christina, not Susanna. I guess her mother liked Christina, because it was similar to hers (Christian).

454. Christian Carpenter

The CM has name as "Christian".  The two children are flip-flopped in the
Carpenter Memorial.  The male child belongs in this family.
He is listed as a son of this family by The Carpenter and Related Family
Historical Journal, 1995, Vol. V, No.9, page 552.
Christiana however is not listed in that record.  She is the daughter of
Benjamin Carpenter, an uncle to Christian.

note:
Transcribed by Dennis F. Carpenter, July 2009
Items that appear to have been inserted are transcribed in brackets. The
surrogate writes Richard Allison in probate, which should read Benjamin
Carpenter. Richard Allison's will was also probated in 1767 and his
son-in-law Samuel Carpenter was one of the executors of his will,
probably the same Samuel, and was probably a nephew of Benjamin, called
cousin here. Only his "six youngest children" and "three youngest
daughters" named here, indicating there may have been older children, or
at least one daughter not named.

Mary Combs

Two Mary Combs married Benjamin Carpenters one generation apart. Talk about confusing!

1738-9, (proved) Dec 1, 1740"   Maybe married a Patience before Elizabeth.
Wife Elizabeth,

Ch John under 21 in 1738, Wait, Rebecca, unborn (1838)  (Have wondered if
this could be the missing Carman or Moses Carpenter, but about 10 years too
early for our ca bds.)
Exec: Joseph Carpenter, Wait Smith, Jr. and Benjamen Carpenter
Wit:  Wm Smith, Soloman Smith, Wm Finn
Brothers named in will:
Joseph, Samuel, Benjamin, and Timothy Carpenter

In the will of John Gale of Goshen, dated Oct 10, 1760, mention is made of land
of Timothy Carpenter as a boundary to his property.  So we find that these five
brothers were all located closely, and progenitors of the numerous family of
the name in that part of the state.

AFN RSDD-1H (b. 1700) SCS1-K4 (b. 1701) and NXGC-48 (b. 1702) are listed in
the AF.  These are probably duplicates or one was a child that died as a
infant.  It is unknown at this time which is which.  Thus only one child shown
in this record.

AFN TRR4-LG same father different mother seems incorrect.  This John given to
first mother.
TRR4-LG is a different individual from the following AFNs:
AFN RSDD-1H (b. 1700), SCS1-K4 (b. 1701) and NXGC-48 (b. 1702) are listed in
the AF.  These are probably duplicates or one was a child that died as a
