III. A. EMELINE CARPENTER -- A daughter of Lewis A. and Roxy I.e. (Owen) Carpenter, Emeline was born May 20, 1840.
(5) She lived at Westtown, Ridgebury and Middletown, N.Y. and died at Middletown March 13, 1896. She married at Ridgebury, N.Y. on July 13, 1861 Col. William Cook Carpenter as his third wife. Col. Carpenter was born about 1805 and died at Ridgebury April 15, 1881.
Col. William Cook Carpenter was raised by the Isaac Denton family in Wawayanda, N.Y. and lived there many years. He first wed Mary Jessup, sister
- 70 - Descendants of Col. Solomon Carpenter (1690-1762)
of Edwin Jessup of Middletown, N.Y., and she died in 1841 at age 22, leaving him with children Theodore A., who died at age 30, Clara Elizabeth, who died at age 19, and William H., born Feb. 11, 1840. Son William H. wed Emily Wilson (1840-1895) Nov. 16, 1859 at Ridgebury; he was a farmer at Mt. E-MAIL: Mon, 1 May 2000 From: Robin Carpenter
Hello Carpenters:
Here is another Carpenter burial I found on my recent visit to Orange County NY.
In Ridgebury, along Route 6, is the "Primitive Baptist Church of Brookfield," est. 1792, with a modest cemetery adjoining.  Brookfield was the old name for Ridgebury.  Strangely, this church seems to have NO parking area, and NO directly useful path-or-walkway access from the road.  Yet the church itself seems very well maintained, and the grass is neatly trimmed.
The cemetery, on the other hand, is a mess...with trash around and broken and fallen stones common.
In the cemetery of the Primitive Baptist Church is found "Abigail, the wife of Benjamin Carpenter, died June 14(?), 1836."  I don't know which Benjamin this Abigail is the wife of.
(Also in this cemetery is Mary the wife of Holloway Stephens d. 4/19/1812 aged 38.  I noted this Stephens burial only because Holloway Stephens was an abutting neighbor to my Carman Carpenter in Minisink.  There is no particular Carpenter meaning to it...but there it is in case someone out there has some interest or connection.)
Robin.

Hello All:
Ruttenber & Clark's "History of Orange County" NY refers (pp.680, 684) to a Col. William C. Carpenter owning a farm in Wawayanda, "...about a mile and a half south of Brookfield..." in the mid 1800s.  ... (partial)
Robin C.
MORE: 3 Apr 2001  Thanks, John and Ida for your responses.  I now recognize this line as among the antecedents of Raymond George Carpenter.
In case it's of peripheral interest for you, synopsis of the 1798 tax lists describes the house of John Knapp (30x26, 6 windows, in good condition, value $300) adjoining Joshua Davis...and says Col William C. Carpenter was later the owner of the Davis house.  The Davis property was "a stone and a wooden house in good condition, the stone size 30x35 feet, one floor, four windows, the wooden house size 24x18 feet, one window one floor valuation $367.50".
I realize I'm a bit more interested in this "locational" stuff than most others...but there it is.
Robin

BIRTH-MARRIAGES-DEATH: "Carpenters of the South", SLC FHL 929.273 C225ctl, entitled "John of Monongalia Cny WV," page 2, prepared by Terry L. Carpenter of Memphis, Tennessee.  "Ashman Carpenter, born 26 Apr 1801, died 6 Dec 1886, married first Emily Martin on 4 June 1821, second Eliza A. (Robinson) Stanley on 1 Jan 1865."  His children were listed as: Uriah, Ethan, Louisa, John, David, Rowena, and Ashmond Jr.  See C-3, #1 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, CO.  NOTE: the 1850 Census incorrectly reports Ashman and his son and grandson as "Ashmond."  Further, it appears that Ashman was married three times with Eliza as his third wife.

BIRTH-MARRIAGES-CHILDREN-DEATH: Information from Paul Shroyer, April 2000: Ashman Carpenter, b. April 26, 1801, Mon. Co., W.Va; d. December 06, 1886, Marion Co., W.Va."  See "Carpenter - Shroyer" in Word files of Jan Hornick.

SPOUSE-SON: Ancestral File, 1993 Edition provided Ashman Carpenter and Emily Martin as the parents of David Carpenter born 1833 Marion Co., WV.  See C-3, #6.  NOTE: Patty Carpenter Helms reported by e-mail on June 3, 1998 that Ashman and Emily were married in Monongalia County.

CENSUS: 1850 Virginia, Marion County, Eastern District Census; DPL Film VA 1850-5, Dwelling 158, enum. 25 July 1850: "Carpenter, Ashmond, 49, Farmer, $1000; Emily, 50; Louisa, 21; John, 19; David, 16; Rowanna, 14; Ashmond, 12; George L., 7; Nancy Martin, 70."  All were born in Virginia except John, David and Rowanna who were born in Ohio.  See C-2, #1.

SECOND MARRIAGE: "Marion County WV Marriages, 1842-1899"; SLC FHL 975.454 V2m, page 28: "Carpenter, 'Ashmel' (W), 55, Monongalia; Miller, Nancy (W), 51, Washington Co., PA; John and Ann; D. S. and Mary Shaw; Nov 9, 1856.  See Notebook IV, page 44a.  NOTE: It appears that Nancy Ann's maiden name was Shaw.

CENSUS: 1860 Virginia, Marion County Census, Forksburg P.O.; DPL Film VA 1860-7; enum. 10 Jul 1860; Dwelling 772: "Ashman Carpenter, 59m; Farmer; Nancy Ann, 60f; Ashman, 22m; George L., 18m."  Ashman and George born in VA; Ashman, Jr. born in Ohio and Nancy born in Pennsylvania.  NOTE: This was difficult to read.

THIRD MARRIAGE: "Taylor County WV Marriages; 1853-1905; FHL 975.455 V28c; Feb 1987; page 33: "Carpenter, Ashman, 63 (W), Marion Co.; Stanley, Eliza A., 47 (W), Ireland; Taylor Co."  Ashman's parents were given as John and Ann.  Eliza's parents were given as "_____ and _____ Robinson.  They were married 1 Jan 1865.

CENSUS: 1870 West Virginia, Marion County, Winfield Township Census; page 441: "Carpenter, Ashman, 69, M, Farmer; Eliza Ann, 53, F; Emma, 17, F; William H., 12, M; Caleb, 11, M."  All were born in Virginia except Eliza Ann, born in Ireland.  See C-5, #1.

CENSUS: 1880 West Virginia, Marion County; DPL Index: "Carpenter, Ashnar, 78, farmer; Liza 62, wife."  They and their parents born in WV.  (Probably not correct for either Eliza or for Ashman's parents.)

DESCENDANT: On 2 Aug 2009 Jeffrey Scott Carpenter, M.D., wrote: "I think we have a set of common grandparents about six generations ago and that's where I've run into a bit of a roadblock but I've only really been looking into my father's side of the family for the past year. I ran across your name a couple of times regarding Lurenna (sp?) Carpenter and I know a little of her story from a Cyclopedia of the area produced in the late 1800's regarding John Harr (Son of Richard Harr and Lurenna Carpenter Harr). Do you have any good leads on when/where Lurenna's father came from? I've got a lot of local court proceedings info on him (road maintainence and other common issues of the time) and land purchases (he liked to buy land) but can't nail down who his father was. I recently sent off some DNA samples for y-DNA analysis and while they are not entirely finished with the processing, I match either the Providence or (more likely given that my family comes through Ashman (Lurenna's brother)) the Rehoboth branch (these two branches are so closely related they need to run additional assays to determine which one)."

Emelia or Emily Martin

MARRIAGE-CHILDREN: "Carpenters of the South", SLC FHL 929.273 C225ctl, Chapter entitled "John of Monongalia Cny WV," page 2, prepared by Terry L. See C-3, #1 in the files of Jan Hornick, Englewood, CO.  See also 1850 Census in Ashman's notes.

DEATH-PARENTS: FHL Film 835,405, Marion County Deaths: "Emily Carpenter, Fe, died April 3, 1855, age 55 years, 24 days; parents: John and Nancy Martin; Ashman Carpenter, husband."  See Notebook I, page 103.  NOTE: Emily's date of birth was calculated from this data. See also M-10, #1, "Marion County Deaths," FHL Book 975.454 V23m which confirms her calculated date of birth and her parents as "John 'R.' and Nancy Martin."

SPOUSE-SON: Ancestral File, 1993 Edition for David Carpenter, born 1833.

PARENTS-SPOUSE-CHILDREN: Information via e-mail from Robert M. Hershman on 17 Apr 1998 reported Emily was the daughter of John Presley Martin and Nancy Miller and b. 3 Apr 1855 (incorrect, her deathdate).

8360. Ethan Carpenter

PARENTS-MARRIAGES: "Carpenters of the South", SLC FHL 929.273 C225ctl, Chapter entitled "John of Monongalia Cny WV," page 2, prepared by Terry L. Carpenter of Memphis, Tennessee.  "Ethan Carpenter, born 16 Mar 1825 in Marion Cny WV, died 7 Aug 1915, married first c 1848 to Matilda Weaver (born Dec 1824 or Jan 1825, daughter of Uriah M. and Rebecca (Mitchell) Weaver), second Martha Friel."  His children are listed.  See C-3, #1 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, CO. QUESTION: Were all his children born to Matilda?  NOTE: His place of birth was given as Marion County, West Virginia.  Neither Marion County nor West Virginia were in existence in 1825.  The parent county from which Marion was formed was Monongalia, thus he was most likely born in Monongalia, Virginia.

CONFLICT-MARRIAGES: "Some Martin Cousins", Martin and Bayless, 1979, FHL 929.273 M363md, page 223: "Ethan Carpenter (grandfather of Mrs. Burr Marsh of Upshur Co.-about Rock Cave) was born in Barbour Co., and he m. Matilda Weaver, also a dau of John (as was Almira Jane Weaver who married Simeon Carpenter of Upshur County who was a grandson of Daniel, b. Barbour Co, 22 Dec 1829). His parents: Daniel and Louvennia Carpenter; her parents: Reuben W. & Elizabeth.  I feel sure this is the same Ethan as above.  But I have been told that Ethan's father was named William."  These notes were copied from Upshur County Court House by Mary B. Carpenter.  See M-17.  QUESTION: Were there two Ethan Carpenters??

FURTHER CONFLICT-SPOUSES-CHILDREN: "History of Marion County, WV"; 1985; FHL 975.454 H2h Q Area; page 119 submitted by Sherry Carpenter Heston: "Ethan married Matilda True.  They had two sons: Henry and Uriah.  His second wife was Clorisinda Fast.  They had one daughter, Emilie Jane."  See M-24.

See C-2, #1 and VI, page 2.  NOTE: Ethan lived next to his father, Ashman, and his brother, Uriah.
CONFLICT: If Ethan were 23 in 1850, and he was born the month of March, then he would have been born in 1827.

John was an editor and proprietor, for many years, of the Oswego
Palladium, Oswego, N.Y.1
OBIT A LONG LIFE OF LABOR
1  OBIT Died-In Woodbury N. J. July 21, 1891 John Carpenter aged 85
years seven months and eight days  He took to the printing
office while yet a boy and secured an apprenticeship in the
office of the Hurkimer Herald     He became its acting editor
while yet a young apprentice and at the age of 19, differing
with the owner of the paper as to the Presidential candidates he
bought the balance of his apprenticeship and the paper with it
and transferred its support from Adams to Jackson.  The people
of Herkimer County in the election of 1824~ sustained the course
of the new editor.  In 1826 Mr. Carpenter was induced to remove
to Oswego, then a promising lake port settlement on the northern
frontier,  and help establish the Oswego Palladium which is yet
a prosperous and influential paper with daily and weekly
editions and one of the oldest Democratic papers in NY
State.      Most of his long life was spent in Oswego,  which he
saw grow from a little village about the frontier forts to
become a city of considerable commercial importance to the
country
1  OBIT After about twenty years close labor on the Palladium during
which it did good service for his  party being the paper which
in the 1840 campaign got from General Harrison and published the
famous letter in which he confessed that he had a political
committee of three to keep his political conscience and tell
what his opinions were on public issues - Mr. Carpenter sold the
printing office in order to accept the clerkship of the County
to which he had been elected;  but he afterward for many years
contributed to the political columns of the paper.
1  OBIT
1  OBIT Deceased was through all his life a very strict adherent to the
old party of Jefferson     His first vote for president was for
Andrew Jackson,  his last for Grover Cleveland and in his old
age he expressed himself glad to know that for more than a half
a century he had never failed to discharge his duty as a citizen
in voting both in the spring and fall elections every time When
he removed to ,NJ a few years ago warned by a second
attack of pneumonia that he could not longer stand the Lake
Ontario winters - he so timed his removal as to cast his vote in
NY state and become a resident of ,NJ the same day;
so that in all his more than three score years as a voter he
never missed a single general election    In 1876 when he had
voted for the one hundredth time (spring and fall) he was
elected by acclamation to represent the Oswego district in the
Democratic state convention of NY, with a very
complimentary resolution by the county convention
1  OBIT Political duties are public duties, and where the close of a
long life affords such an instance of fidelity to honestly held
political convictions it seems proper to publicly mention it.
Deceased was as unselfish as he was devoted to the party of his
preference  When he did not like its candidates he supported
them for their cause; when his own views failed to prevail he
promptly accepted those of the majority as declared through the
regular council of the party; in no other way he believed could
the party and its standard be sustained and its policy carried
to triumph for the good and glory of the country.
1  OBIT The deceased was just as warm and strong in his private
friendships; but where they clashed with the cause of his party
he never hesitated in his course.  He had been a staunch friend
and adherent of President Van Buren but when in 1848 General
Cass became the candidate of the party, and "Little Van" then
started his personal party,  Mr. Carpenter stood almost alone in
his
1  OBIT section, at first,  in support of the regular ticket of the
national convention.  In fact Mr. Nathan Robbins (who was then
collector of the port of Oswego) was the only other official at
the time in that democratic county who stood by Mr. Carpenter in
supporting the regular electoral ticket.  Oswego was never a
democratic county after the Van Buren bolt;  but deceased was
several times elected a member of its board of supervisors and
took a prominent and honorable part in the county management.
Between 1852 and 1856 he was a member of the National Democratic
committee of NY state.
1  OBIT The deceased was as devoted in domestic duties and to his
private affairs as to his duties as a citizen.   He won warm and
universal esteem as a neighbor and reciprocated love of all his
large family.   He was unselfishly and untiringly active as long
as his eye and hand strength to labor.  Only a few weeks before
his death he was every day helping effectually in the office of
1  OBIT the Gloucester County Democrat (the paper of his son James) and
when one morning be had to return to bed, never to rise again in
life, it was truly a bed of rest for him - a rest which was
1  OBIT most welcome to his well-worn body and mind and a rest which bad
been richly earned.  He went as a child to its slumber.

Resided in Manlius, N.Y.  He was a Congregationalist minister

was characterized by an indescribable will and a kindly heart
and believed that the Lord would provide for those he loved.

3609. Benjamin Carpenter

Benjamin's early boyhood days were passed in his native county
and when 14 years old he went to Hartford, Trumbull , ,OH
where he enjoyed the benefit of academic education.   He later
entered the store of Col. Richard Hayes and for several years
followed a mercantile business.  From an early age he had
cherished an ambition to become a lawyer and diligently pursued
the study of the law in every leisure hour.    In 1837 he
removed to Conneaut, Ashtabula , ,OH, and entered the law
offices of Judge S. F. Taylor, being shortly thereafter admitted
to the bar.  When Judge Taylor moved away a year later Mr.
Carpenter succeeded to his business, and continued successfully
for nine years in the active practice of his profession.  He
formed a partnership with Zaphna Lake, under the style of Lake &
Carpenter,  which proved a strong and successful combination.
They operated a general store at Conneaut and carried out a
large trade with owners and captains of lake craft.  They also
built several large vessels and in 1847 launched what was then
the largest craft on the great lakes, - the brig  "Banner" - and
were ridiculed by their neighbors for what was considered a
venturesome enterprise.   In 1850 Mr. Carpenter became a
resident of the thriving young city of Chicago, which was thence
forth his home.   He then went into the packing business for
several years.    In 1857 he was elected a member of the city
council from the then ninth ward, and from that day devoted most
of his attention to public interests.  He was the first
president of the board of public works.

He was an upright man and did not hesitate to express himself
clearly and forcibly, and to act upon his convictions in both
public and private life.  There was probably not a schoolhouse
in Ashtabula , ,OH, in which his voice was not heard in
denunciation of slavery during the exciting time of his early
manhood;  no fugitive slave was ever returned south from his
county;   and he was equally active in sustaining the cause of
temperance.  He was one of the founders of Plymouth
Congregational church, and also of the New England
Congregational church at Chicago.2  SOUR S203
