A Typical Wedding

This was a typical wedding of those days full and jollity for several days and then the young couple settled down to the serious business of life. At the weddings the jokes at times were practical as in the case of the wedding of John D. Carpenter, great grandfather of Dr. C. N. Skinner. Mr. Carpenter was comparatively short in statute but what he lacked in height was made up in physical vigor and grit and when he and the bride took their places before the minister for the wedding ceremony a guest placed a sheet of paper on the floor for the groom to stand on, to equalize the height of the pair, the bride by -the-way, being about half a head taller. The wag made a serious error for the groom insisted on stopping the ceremony until he walloped the man who had insulted him. Friends intervened, the joker apologized and a half hour later the wedding went on.

These people, whose immediate ancestors had suffered so terribly from the Indian raids in the valley and many had fought in the war of the Revolution, were of the "Early to bed and early to rise etc." class and this wise saying of Poor Richard proved true with them for they were physically strong and active, wealthy considering their wants, and their business judgment was unexcelled.

They were unanimous in opinion for the proprieties and ceremonials. The minister was a most revered gentleman and at his pastoral visits all the members of the household gathered to give grave but most courteous greeting to the dominie, to hear a portion of the Scriptures read and the prayer invoking God's blessing on that household. A part of the ceremony, not to be overlooked was the offering of cake and wine or whiskey to the Dominie. I am speaking now of the days of 80 to 100 years ago.

REPLY:
Hello Robin,
The John Carpenter appears to be RIN 21082 in the CE CD 2001.  He was born 6 Feb 1796 in Minisink, Orange, NY.
His son Levi Carpenter-21099 is listed in the 1870 Census for Lumberland, Sullvan, NY.  His father is Benjamin Carpenter-12760 and is number 309 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 84.  His family is on page 156 (#134).  His grandfather is Col. Solomon Carpenter-4738 who is Number 75 in the Carpenter Memorial on Page 61.
The above John Carpenter-21082 had a brother named James b. 6 April 1805 in Minisink.  He would have been 11 in 1816.
The above John Carpenter-21082 had an Uncle James Carpenter-12759 b. 1752 in Goshen, Orange, NY d. April 1817.
(NOTE:  This would match with, "James was also assessed in 1814, but not in 1818."
James Carpenter-12759 had a son named James Carpenter-21074 b. 1788 in Goshen, Orange, NY but nothing more is known about him.
I found only 1 of Col. Solomon Carpenter's descendants named Joesph that even came close to being alive at the right time.  This is Joseph S. Carpenter-23416 b. 19 May 1815 in Amity, Orange, NY who was son of Solomon Carpenter-23412 b. 24 March 1768.

OTHER POSSIBILES Joseph Carpenters  ...
I have a Joseph Carpenter-26996 b. abt 1776 in Newburgh, Orange, NY who is Number 331 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H. Carpenter, 1901.No family listed.   Probably settled in Palmyra, NY.

I have a Joseph Carpenter-27042 b. abt 1765 in Newburgh, Orange, NY who is Number 333 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H. Carpenter, 1901.  No family listed.  He died in New York City, unmarried.

I have a Joseph Carpenter-49408 b. 15 Dec 1790 in Goshen, Orange, NY.  E-MAIL: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 From: "Marcia Buffett" To: "John R. Carpenter" CC: "Ken Warkentine"
Dear John and Ken:
Do either of you have anything on a Joseph C. Carpenter of Northville? He had a daughter Libbie who was married on March 31, 1880 to Harmon Fisher a barber in Northville. Thanks, Marcia
NOTE: This Joseph had a sister named Rebecca whose first husband died in Northville.  Was the Joseph C. above a descendant of this Joseph?

I have a Joseph Carpenter-88893 b. 30 Sep 1783 in Chester, Orange, NY d. 21 May 1829 in Goshen, Orange, NY. He was the son of Jesse Carpenter-2688 who was Number 340 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 88.

I hope this helps.

I believe that John and Mary Carpenter belonged to the New Utrecht Dutch Reformed Church in Brooklyn. There are burials noted as follows:

Just so everyone knows, I spoke today with the Historian of the New Utrecht Reformed Church and he said those children buried in their cemetery were not of John and Mary Carpenter. They belonged to John and Margaret Carpenter. This appears not to apply to our family. Someone along the line took the abbreviation for Margaret as meaning Mary.

3690. Noah Smith Carpenter

Number 2335 in the Carpenter Memorial. Family is Number 712 in CM.
He was a relative of Samuel, probably of Ridgebury, NY and Benjamin of
Brookfield, NY and Noah the lame man.

SEE: Carpenter Chronicles, Vol. 3, 1990 by Bette Butcher Topp.
She cites: Ancestry and Descendants of Col. Soloman Carpenter, printed by
Rosemary Bachelor of Machias, ME.

Noah was a church member for over 60 years and a veteran of the War of 1812.
He served at Brooklyn Heights, New York City.

SEE: The Descendants of Col. Soloman Carpenter Book.
Noah was born in Orange Co., N.Y. Jan. 14, 1782 and
died near Middletown, N.Y. July 19, 1864; a profess
ional gardener, he married Mary L. Millspaugh of Mont
gomery, N.Y. He was also kin to Samuel Carpenter of
Ridgebury, N.Y., Benjamin Carpenter of Brookfield (or
Slate Hill), N.Y., and to Noah, the lame man, a post
rider and mail carrier who lived at the two-mile stone
on LaGrange Road and carried mail from  Goshen to
Bloomingburgh, N.Y., according to the History of
Orange Co. Noah Smith Carpenter lived in Minisink,
N.Y., 1800-1845, in Paterson, N.J., 1845 -1855, then as
a widower returned to Orange County and owned a farm
and garden field house near Middletown.
On July 20, 1814, Noah Smith Carpenter answered the third call for
volunteers in the War of 1812. He enlisted as a private at Minisink Aug. 15,
1814 in Capt. Benjamin Dunning's Co. of Col. Berrian's regiment. They went
to Newburgh, then by sloop down the Hudson River to Haarlem and Brooklyn
Heights to guard New York City against the British. Noah was discharged Dec.
1, 1814. His service is documented in a land bounty claim on file in the
National Archives.
Records of the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgebury,
N.Y. show he and his wife Mary joined the church in
1809. His obituary, which appeared in the Aug. 10, 1864
edition of The Whig, an Orange Co., N.Y. newspaper,
said he had been active in church activities more than
60 years, noted he was "beloved by all who knew him for
all those amiable qualities which tend to constitute
the gentleman and the Christian," and paid tribute to
his long life with a poem in his honor.

NOTE:  The Noah Henry Carpenter baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in
Ridgebury, N.Y. on July 5, 1845 was probably a grandson of Noah Smith
Carpenter.  By whom is the question!

Carpenter excerpts ...
1)
The first town meeting for the town of Dewitt was held at the tavern of George F. Grinnell in Orville on April 7 and 8, 1835; Elijah C. Rust, justice of the peace for the old town of Manlius, presided and William Eager acted as clerk, and $250 were voted for the support of common schools.  The following officers were elected:
Zebulon Ostrom, supervisor; William Eager, town clerk; David G. Wilkins, and Adam Harroun, justices of the peace; Jacob I. Low, Joseph Yarrington, and Aaron Chapin, assessors; William Wheeler and John Furbeck, commissioner of highways; Vliet Carpenter, Edmund D. Cobb, and George Richardson, commissioners of common schools; ...

2)
Turning again to the prominent settlers of the town it is pertinent and add the names of John B. Ives, Amos Sherwood, Nathaniel Gillett, Dr. Smith, Dr. E. E. Knapp, Smith Hibbard, George W. Holbrook, B. S. Gregory, Joel Kinne, Thomas and Jacob L. Sherwood, Robert Dunlop, Enos K. Reed, John Jones, Gorton Nottingham (father of Jacob A. and Benjamin C., of Syracuse), Van Vleck Nottingham, Henry Nottingham, Charles Hiscock, Joel Knapp (died May 15, 1864, aged seventy-one), Dr. D. A. Sherwood (died in 1864 at the age of sixty-four), and Vliet Carpenter, son of Nehemiah, of Manlius.

3)
The village of East Syracuse is the growth of the last twenty-five years of less.  In October, 1872, the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company purchased from Rufus R. Kinne, Elijah Clark, Eugene Bogardus, and the Carpenter estate 150 acres of land upon which to locate freight yards, round houses, and shops, and there established a division termini station between Albany and Rochester.

4)
The First Presbyterian Society of East Syracuse was organized in the district school house on March 8, 1875, under the direction of Edmund S. Walker, then a missionary of the Presbytery of Syracuse.  Elijah Clark was chairman of the meeting, J. Q. Baker acted as clerk, and five trustees were appointed, viz.:  John Jones, Eugene Bogardus, John A. Henry, E. J. Evans, and Vliet Carpenter.

8533. Nehemiah Carpenter

Born about 1810 per the CM on page 463.  See number 4328-a - per numbering
indicates an add on to the record.  This may mean he is from another family or
birth year estimated wrongly.  Sequence should be about 1824.

8534. William Carpenter

Born 1 May 1806 per the CM on page 463.  See number 4328-b - per numbering
indicates an add on to the record.  This may mean he is from another family or
birth year is wrong.  Sequence should be 1826.
If birth date is correct William would have been born when his
father was only 8.
He was a prosperous New York farmer.  He early became an
abolitionist.  The Prespyterian church of which he was a member,
was not as ready as he was to oppose slavery, and he expressed
his opinion of its tardiness.  As a result, he was expelled from
the church.

Mary Hollister

Mary was a descendant of Lieut. John Hollister, of Wethersfield,
Conn., and his wife Joanna Treat-Hollister, daughter of Hon.
Richard Treat Sr.  Both Hollister and Treat were among the first
settlers and most prominent men of Connecticut colony.  Robert
Treat, brother of Mrs. John Hollister, was a famous indian
fighter and for many years was governor of Connecticut.  It was
he who engineered the hiding of the colony's charter in the oak
tree when Sir Edmund Andros came after it.
