Dear John,
Thank you so much for sending information on ASHMAN CARPENTER!! I
believe that your genealogy connection is correct but there are some
problems.
Virginia A. Brown, a genealogist in Phillipsburg, New Jersey
sent me her first report on the Carpenter family. I will mail you a copy
of this report. She located the US Census records for the 1850 Census
Beattystown/ Hackettstown, NJ which shows the following:
(1) Ashman Carpenter age 45, a carpenter; 1860 Census, his age is 58 years
(born 1802-1805)
(2) Susan (Allen) Carpenter, age 41 (born about 1810)
Children:
(1) James Carpenter (born about 1826)
(2) Mary J. Carpenter (born ca 1834)
(3) Ziba O. Carpenter (born ca 1835)
(4) Jacob Carpenter (born ca 1838)
(5) William Carpenter (born ca 1840)
(6) Charles Carpenter (born ca 1842)
(7) Annie Carpenter (born ca 1844)
(8) Roberson Carpenter (Called Aaron R. in 1860 Census); called "Robert"
by family) (born ca 1846)
(9) Caroline Carpenter (called "Carrie" by family) (born ca 1848)
My mother (born 1909) and cousin, Mildred Carpenter Haggerty (born 1902),
have never heard of the children (1) - (3) given above as they probably
died before they knew or became aware of them. I have asked Mrs. Brown to
continue her research on this line and I will let you know what she finds.
Unfortunately, Ashman Carpenter's birth in 1802-1805 seems to make your
the connection to Joseph James Carpenter and Esther Walker unlikely. Could
Ashman have been a son of James Carpenter and Sophia Simons? This would
explain the eldest son's name, James. Other possibilities from the notes
you sent me are a son of Hope Carpenter and Phebe Yost born in 1802, a son
of Samuel Carpenter and Mary Templer, a son of the John Carpenter born
about 1776 in Sussex, NJ.
I would welcome any suggestions. I am not sure if an Ashman Carpenter can
simply be added to the above lines.
Again, thank you for all your help. I am mailing you a receipt for postage.

SEE father's notes. This Joseph James Carpenter narrated the record to Nellie
Carpenter-Patterson (daughter) and copied by Ford Ashman Carpenter who sent it
to John A. Carpenter. James Webster Carpenter who copied it on March 5, 1997.
Jerry Eugene Donovan, great grandson of James Webster Carpenter recopied it on

In another part of the report he has 3 sons and 5 daughters with Alfred,

This George Carpenter family is that of my great-great grandfather, George N. Carpenter. I know little of the family of his first wife. I know much more about second family.(That message should have said children six through 13 are those of George N. Carpenter and his wife Jane
Elizabeth Cline. The list was missing Mary Jane and Lewis B. Carpenter.)Children six through ten (should be 13) shown are his children by his second wife, Jane Elizabeth Cline. The birthdates shown are considerably off from our family records and U.S. census records. George and his second wife emigrated to Marathon, Lapeer County, Michigan from Norfolk County, Ontario, about 1860.
Henry, Augustus and Peter all fought in the Civil War. Henry died of disease during the war and is buried in Little
Rock, Arkansas, This particular Peter probably does not match the one in question. He married Hannah Leach and
eventually ended up in Grand Marais, Alger County, Michigan.I do believe the Carpenter and probably Cline family were loyalists but can't yet confirm it. I have a likely match for Jane Cline's family. If correct her father was born in Maryland. George was born in Philadelphia and his parents
were both born in New Jersey, although I have not identified them yet.I'm extremely interested in exchanging additional information beyond what is posted below about the George
Carpenter family and connecting with any Carpenter relatives. I have substantially more but have lots more to learn.
John Alexander Carpenter is my great grandfather.I do know about the Carpenter CD, I just didn't expect my family to be on it, since I have seen so little about them.

Surname: CARPENTER, SUMENING
I am a descendant of Peter Carpenter of Cornwall, Ontario (1824 and earlier) through his daughter Elizabeth
Carpenter Sumening. All I know about Peter is ... he was a witness for his daughter's wedding to John
William Sumening as well as the christening of her only child. Elizabeth died in child birth. I also know Peter
had at least two sons ... Jacob and Lewis. I also know that Jacob married Margaret La Vine in 1826.
I would very much like to exchange and share information with you on this family.CENSUS: Could this be the same Peter with a family????
