3893. Peter Carpenter

In 1810 he removed from North Carolina to Tennessee in a county
that was then called Bedford, now Marshall.  He entered from the
Government and the brothers purchased together 240 acres of land
and called his homestead "Carpenter Hill";  named from a high
hill on the place which still retains the name of Carpenter Hill
and is one of the most prominent landmarks in that section of
the state.  The Ramseys were among the pioneers of Tennessee.
Margaret Ramsey was a cousin to James K. Polk and was born on an
adjoining plantation to that of the Polks on Duck River.  Peter
was at one time a large land owner and also owned many slaves.
In his old age he made his home with his son Samuel.  He was a
warm hearted and sympathetic man and generous to a fault.  He
was buried at Bloomfield, Iowa.2  SOUR S203

Hannah CARPENTER was born 21
January 1791 at Goshen, Chenango, N Y. She died 29 June, 1875 at Bath,
Steuben, N Y. She married on 21 May 1812 George Cunningham EDWARDS, a great
grandson of Jonathan Edwards.
They had 8 children: Mary w/o David McMaster; Jesse, h/o Emily Wilson
Sheetz; Clarissa, w/o James Dudley; Alexander, h/o Elizabeth McCurdy; Mason;
John, h/o 1) Rose Murphy, and 2) Constance Hunter; Sarah; and George, h/o
Sarah Sherwood.
They lived at Bath, NY, where he was a lawyer and the first judge of Steuben
County.
Who are her parents? She and George are my great great grandparents.

George Cunningham Edwards removed as spouse and reassigned to the Hannah Carpenter b. 21 Jan 1791.  The reason is pending proof.  See below.  JRC Oct 7, 2002.

Dear John,

Thanks for your response. I think the naming conventions bear out the very strong possibility that Hannah was the daughter of Jesse Carpenter and Sarah/Sally Seely and the sister of Clarissa Carpenter. Now for some proof.

Connie

Dear Connie,

When you read the notes, you will find out that Frank Bradner states the his source has confused some of the Carpenters he submitted.  I concur.  I think this is one of those incidents.

Look at children, places and other similarities.  Take a piece of paper and add up the pluses and minuses for each possibility.  You will come to a conclusion but not proof.

This is the hard part.  The proof.  This means going back to the orginal sources and sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Enjoy the hunt!

And let me know what you conclude or prove!

I have been in touch with Frank Bradner quite a bit in the last several days.

I believe that you are suggesting to me that Jesse Carpenter is more likely the father of my Hannah Carpenter than Benjamin Carpenter, and certainly there are some names that make one wonder, not to mention the birth and death date similarities of the 2 Hannahs.

My great grandfather, John Edwards, whose parents are George Cunningham Edwards and Hannah Carpenter has a sister Clarissa Roe Edwards who married James Rowe Dudley. And my great grandfather named his first daughter Clara Dudley Edwards, obviously after the Clarissa and Dudley connection. At the same time, there is a Clarissa Carpenter, daughter of Jesse, who married David Roe.

George Cunningham Edwards and Hannah Carpenter stayed in Bath, Steuben County, New York, to which they had moved by 1823, when Alexander Edwards was born. My great grandfather, John, was also born there, as was his first daughter. I am descended from his 2nd wife, Constance Lucretia Hunter and 2nd daughter, Mary Constance Edwards, my grandmother.

I really don't know what to make of this confusion. Perhaps you can set me straight.

Connie

Dear Constance,

You have a small mystery and conflict of data. Compare the 2 briefs below. Each contains a Hannah Carpenter (*****). Look at the notes.

My guess is that George C. Edwards is matched with the wrong Hannah Carpenter.  Your thoughts?

The grandparents were Ezekiel and Anna Carpenter of Connecticut. Ezekiel
was one of the first to resist the collection of church tax, it was connected
with the State tax,
at that time, thus beginning the separation of church and state, for it was
decided in his favor. The grandparents on the other's side were Elisha and

the 4th of July, 1776. She had ten children, all of whom had large families;
her blood descendants number about 8,000 at this date. The subject of this

Brown.  They have three children: Ernest, Ella and Major B.; Gilbert,

He married Anna Fitzgerald, they have two children, Jennie and Blanche. He has been deputy sheriff in Madison Co. for ten years. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter have been life-long workers for temperance, having never used liquor or tobacco in any form.
He was formerly a Republican, is now a Prohibitionist, is in favor of Woman's Rights, or equal rights for all; is opposed to murder for murder, or capital punishment. He was a Universalist formerly but now believes in spirit communion as a demonstrated fact. Is a worker for all reforms, by the great principle of evolution. Progress by a survival of the fittest."
