Descendants of William Carpenter of Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony, now part of Bristol County, MA

Notes

233. Freelove Chaffee

Last name not CHASE, but CHAFFEE per Carpenter Memorial.
!FATHER: Father was either David or Jonatahn Chaffee (who were brothers) of
Rehoboth, Bristol county, MA.  Best guess is Jonathan.  No proof yet given.

Eliphalet Carpenter

Number 177 in the CARPENTER MEMORIAL on page 73.
Family on page 121 (#88).
He removed to Randolph, VT about 1790: from there he went to Barre, VT in 1799.
Eliphalet Carpenter, private in Captain Hill's Company in Col. William's
Regiment, enlisted 29 Sept 1777, served one month at Tiverton.  Roll sworn to
at Rehoboth, MA  Enlisted again in Captain Samuel Brown's Company, Col.
Carpenter's (# 775) Regiment, RI.  Alarm, 11 Aug 1780.  Served 8 days.  Marched
from Rehoboth to Tiverton.  It was probably this Eliphalet who enlisted in the
formation of 1777 to 1781: he was discharged 17 Dec 1780.

Ebenezer Carpenter

Number 263 in CARPENTER MEMORIAL on page 80.  Listed as a farmer.
Family on page 140 (#118).
He married Susannah Perrin, Jan. 29, 1732. She was a Granddaughter of William no.3. They were 2nd., cousins. He was a farmer.

914. Lydia Carpenter

NUmber 796 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 140.

916. Molly Carpenter

NUmber 798 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 140.
Her husband was a farmer.

921. David Carpenter

Number 803 in CARPENTER MEMORIAL on page 140.
Per corrective notes on page 838, he died young.

Jess or Jesse Bliss

NAME: Jesse inthe CM and Jess in the AF.

Sarah Hunt

Possibly Native American.  Another "HUNT" born abt 1710 in this area was a
Native American.

238. David Perrin

Either David or Daniel was the father of David who married Abigail Cooper.
Which one is the question.

245. Joseph Carpenter

Number 180 on page 73 of the Carpenter Memorial.
Family on page 122 (#89).
David J. Jilson of Attleboro says (in the 1880s) the intention of marriage was
entered in the RI records on 16 Feb 1723. Residence in Bristol, RI and Surinam
where he died 4 Feb 1745.  HOWEVER!  SEE E-MAIL BELOW!
A second marriage is mentioned in notes of his son, Number 619, born August
1743, Cyril on page 122.  ". . . probably by 2d wife Huldah . . .".
Jilson also stated the children were born in Bristol, RI.  HOWEVER! The second marriage is not logical and is in question also. It was another Jos. Carpenter who married a Huldah Walker and their son Cyril (b. 27 Aug 1743 verses 7 Sep 1743). See: CE CD RIN 7843.

Surinam = Suriname = Dutch Guiana.  This country is located in the northeast
coast of South America between Guyana and French Guiana.
Misc Note: During the mid 1700s due to Dutch neglect and slave uprisings
the economy of the country suffered.  Sugar was a main export to New England
during this time period.

Subject: More Corrections to Amos B. Carpenter
John,
Attached are some additions and corrections to ABC pertaining to Joseph5 Carpenter of Bristol, Mass. (Joseph4 - 3, William2-1), and his family.  I had come across an item in John Comer's diary pertaining to the drowning between Hog Island and Bristol of a Mr. Joseph Carpenter in 1728.  Once I figured out which Joseph Carpenter he was, I thought I might as well correct and augment as much as I could of the ABC material concerning him, his wife, and children.
Best wishes,
Gene

More corrections and additions to Amos B. Carpenter,  _A Genealogical
History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter  Family in America_ (Amherst,  Mass.,
1898), hereafter cited as  ABC:

JOSEPH5 CARPENTER, son of Joseph4 (Joseph3, William2-1) and Mary  (______)
Carpenter, was born at Swansea, Mass., on 20 June 1688 (Swansea  VR, A:22; ABC,
58, 73).  Rather than declaring marriage intentions  at Bristol, Mass.
[R.I., 1747], on 16 February 1723 (see ABC, 73), he  married there (Rev. John
Usher presiding) on 16 February 1623/4, ABIGAIL  NEWTON, sister of John  Newton
of Bristol (James N. Arnold, _Vital Record  of Rhode Island, 1636-1850_,  21
vols. [Providence, 1891-1912], 6:1:13,  8:202; Estelle Wellwood Wait, "The
Papillons of Boston and Bristol,"  _The New England Historical and Genealogical
Register_ [NEHGR]  124[1970]:161-82, at 177).  Joseph5 did not die in  Surinam
on 4  February 1745 (see ABC, 73) but drowned with three others in  passage
from Hog Island to Bristol on 21 December 1728, when their canoe "sunk   under
them"
("Births, Deaths, Marriages, and One Divorce: Found in the  Diary of  Edward
Comer," _The Mayflower Quarterly_ 67[2001]:135-47, at  139).  His  widow,
Abigail--not his sister of that name, who died at  Swansea, 1 February  1683 (not
1783) (Swansea VR, A:137; see ABC,  74)--married, second, at Bristol on  29 (int.
16) February 1735/6,  Obadiah Papill(i)on (Arnold, _VR of R.I._, 6:1:13,  8:202).

Abigail Papillon, "widow, of Rehoboth," Mass., where she had moved   between
1763 and 1769, was buried at Providence, R.I., on 16 February  1776  (Arnold,
_VR of R.I._, 10:152; NEHGR 124:179).

Children (two only [see ABC, 122]) of Joseph5 and  Abigail (Newton)
Carpenter:

i.  SARAH6  CARPENTER,  b. Bristol, 3 Feb. 1724/5, d. probably
Bristol, 22 Feb.  174[/7]8 (Arnold,  _VR of R.I._, 6:1:13, 121, 8:150, 224).

ii.  JOSEPH CARPENTER,  b. Bristol, __ Oct.  1726, d. Surinam (rec.
Bristol), 4 (not 24  [see ABC, 122]) Feb.  1745, aged 19 (Arnold, _VR of
R.I.,_ 6:1:13, 121).

Abigail Newton

"... sister of John Newton of Bristol ..."

926. Sarah Carpenter

Number 618 on page 122 of the Carpenter Memorial.

One IGI listing has her born in Hopkinton, Washington, RI with parents Joseph & Abigail (?) Carpenter - same date as given. - This makes me wonder ...

927. Joseph Carpenter

Number 617 on page 122 of the Carpenter Memorial.
Family number 238, but CM indicates the family is dropped..
Born in October per the CM, but no year given.

247. Esther Carpenter

Number 187 on page 74 of the Carpenter Memorial.

Jonathan Ormsby

AFN 1TGD-F3 (ORMSBY) and BVZK-W4 (ORMSBEE) are the same person.
Marriage date with Anna should be after 1736.
NOTE: Gene Zubrinsky indicates that Jonaathan Ormsby did not marry (27 June 1830) Ann Carpenter b. 1 Mar 1696/1697 of Woodstock who died 13 Dec 1717. He may have married another, but he did not research that.

Sharilyn,
In answer to your inquiry as to the identity of Jonathan Ormsbee and Rebeka
Carpenter:

he married at Rehoboth, 15 July 1730, REBECKAH (HAMMOND) CARPENTER, b. at
Rehoboth, 11 October 1707, d. probably at Cumberland, between 1747 and 1758,
daughter of William and Rebecka (Ormsbee) Hammond of Swansea and Rehoboth.
The younger Rebeckah's first marriage, at Attleborough or Rehoboth (rec. both
places), 18 January 1727/8, had been to Michael Carpenter, b. at Rehoboth, 14
October 1701, d. at Attleborough, 28 August 1729, son of William Jr. and
Elizabeth (Robinson) Carpenter.  After Rebeckah's death, widower Ormsbee
married third, at Cumberland, 19 February 1759, Ruth Staples, b. at Wrentham,
Mass., 20 August 1728, daughter of Joseph and Hannah (Bartlett) Staples.
Ormsbee's father (Jonathan Sr.) married at Rehoboth, 20 January 1742/3, as
his second wife, Rebeckah's stepmother (her father's third wife), Martha
(Red[a]way) Hammond, b. at Rehoboth, 26 July 1687, daughter of John and Mary
(Ide) (Fuller) Red(a)way.

Elinor, Often Written "Ellen" or "Helen" - by Bradford or by Plymouth court
Clerks, invariably was called "Ellinor" In her own and her son's land records.
Ellinor Billington, widow, on 8 Jan. 1637/8 for "natural love I bear unto
Francis Billington My natural son," Conveyed to him, all her land at Plain
Dealing in New  Plymouth, reserving enough of the land for her own use during
her lifetime. [11]
On 28 Aug. 1638 Ellinor Billington, widow, entered into a marriage contract
with Gregory Armstrong; and by 21 Sept. 1638 Gregory Armstrong and Ellinor his
Wife, with her son Francis Billington, sold land. [11]
0n the last date at which Ellinor is known to living, 2 March 1642/3. Francis
Billington of Plymouth, planter, sold three lots of land at Plain Dealing with
in  the township of Plymouth; Provided that Ellinor, the wife of Gregory
Armstrong be allowed to occupy one of the three lots, during her lifetime. [11]
It has been pointed out that all that Is known about the Billington Pilgrims,
Is written by William Bradford, he Obviously disliked and criticized the entire
family from the beginning. The Billingtons were not in sympathy With the aims
and  tenets of the Plymouth Church, but one wonders that they were not more
cooperative with those it authority who struggled to establish and maintain
such a fragile colony on the hostile New England shore.
John Billington, however, stoutly supported individual independence and freedom
of speech, raising the voice of opposition when he disagreed with the rule of
government.  He and his descendants surely contributed to that integral part of
the American character!

Although Bradford states that the Billington family joined the Mayflower

Notes for Edward Winslow:
According to William S. Appleton, A.M. in the English Ancestry of the Winslow
Family, all of the names were spelled "Wynslowe" in the Register of St.
Peter's, Droitwich, Vol 4.
Marriage Notes for Edward Winslow and Magdalen Ollyver:
"In the fourth volume of the Register (Page 840) was printed a record of the
baptisms of the children of Edward Winslow, of Droitwich, in Worcestershire,
England, purporting to be "taken from an ancient bible in the possession of
Mr. Isaac Winslow."  Hon. James Savage, in the Genealogical Dictionary of New
England, taking the most unfavorable point of view, denies that this record
has any claims to consideration, rejecting it partly on the ground that 20
October, 1595, was not Sunday, but Monday.  Whatever may have been the
ecclesiastical ordinance as to the proper day of baptism, in practice the
rite was certainly administered on any day of the week.  Having had occasion
to examine many parish-registers in England, I can say most positively, that
in such volumes baptisms often follow each other at irregular intervals, and
that they do so on the register of St. Peter's, Droitwich.  Last summer I
copied, letter for letter the entries relating to the Winslow family."
The above quote is from "English Ancestry of theWinslow Family" by William S.
Appleton, A.M.

256. Hannah Carpenter

Number 192 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 74.

NOTE: This marriage is challenged. Why? Because the Hannah Carpenter who married David Thurston was a widow - whose maiden name was French.
Per Gene Zubrinsky
... Widow Hannah m. (2) Rehoboth 18 Nov. 1725, as his 2nd wife, David Thurston (RVR 1:37, 46, 152, 174 [not 168], 2:140, 230; Old Rehoboth Cem 18, 51; RI Cems 69, 358; RVR [pub] 363, citing RVR 7:11). The will of John French, dated 31 May 1723, names daughter Hannah Carpenter, widow. Dated 16 May 1726, the account of the will's executor, French's son Jonathan, calls David Thurston the husband of Hannah Carpenter ... .

          Marriage Date: 18 Nov 1725
          Int Date: 23 Oct 1725

On-line records have this David as the son of John and Hannah Cary Thurston, born "before 1691"  which may or may not be correct.
Can anyone tell me the identity of this Hannah Carpenter? The only remotely close one I have is the Hannah born abt 1711, daughter of Ephraim and Hannah Read Carpenter, but she would have been a mighty young bride. I am trying to get my Carpenter ducks in a row.
Thanks,
Sharilyn
