JRCE-MAIL: 31 Oct 2001 From: Sharilyn Whitaker
Subject: [CARPENTER] Mehitable Tompson w/o Jotham Carpenter, Jr.
In response to a recent question I posed to this list, I
received some wonderful information about Mehitable Tompson and
her family. I thought that there might be others on this list
that would find this interesting and useful.
Regards, Sharilyn
PS The marriage of Jotham Carpenter, Jr. to Mehitable THURSTON
that appears in VR of Rehoboth on Ancestry.com, was IN ERROR.
<<"Order for Div. of 1/3 of Est. of JOHN TOMPSON of Reho. dcd
intest. which was set off to his widow Hannah Tompson who is
also dcd., dtd. 4 Apr 1749. [12:35]
Div. of Est. of JOHN TOMPSON of Reho. that was set off to his
widow Hannah Tompson, div. to his childn.: Hannah (dau.) who was
wife to John Smith dcd., George Tompson (eldest son), heirs of
Elizabeth (dau.) now dcd. who was wife of Ezekiel Fuller,**
heirs of Mehittable (dau.) now dcd. who was wife of Jotham

wife of Robert Abell, pres. 5 Aug 1749. Comm: John Willmouth,
Daniel Barney, Thomas Carpenter, Aaron Kingsley & Phillip
Wheeler. [12: 36/7/8]."
I then found the information on John Tompson. He was married
twice, Elizabeth & Hannah. He first lived in Reading, Middlesex Co.,
MA and then Rehoboth. His parents were George & Sarah
Tompson. George was probably a Scots prisoner from the Battle
of Dunbar who was sent to Massachusetts in 1652 and settled at
Lynn. I have to do some more verifying on this point. But it
would explain why info on this family is hard to find. Many
histories have been done on the pilgrims and Puritans and other
early immigrants, but only recently has anything been collected
on deportees.>>
