NAME: Elijah Rice Carpenter in the CM. Bill Quinn writes: Elijah “Rice” Carpenter-19614 is actually Elijah Rich Carpenter. That makes perfect sense since his mother’s maiden name was Fanny Rich." However, he cites no specific record for this. He does write before his updates, "That area of Massachusetts was very good at records and NEHGS had all of the records. I haven’t yet requested my own copies, but most of the images of the actual civil records were all there. Some were from listings, “Vital Records of Charlton, Sutton, or Attleborough Massachusetts to the year 1849 or 1850”.

BIRTH: See image: RIN 19614 Elijah Carpenter Birth.jpg

MARRIAGE1: Bill quinn writes: Elijah first married Sarah M Eastman, 16 Feb 1862 in Charlton, MA. They had three children, Alice, Arthur, and Herbert and I found birth records with the correct parents. I have not as yet looked to see if Sarah dies or if they were divorced.

MARRIAGE2: Bill Quinn writes: Elijah then married Mary E “Carpenter” on 8 Jan 1877 in Charlton, MA. Mary’s name is given as “Carpenter”. The marriage record for Elijah and Mary gives Marys parent’s names as Rufus Delno and Elizabeth ?. The record also indicates that the marriage is the second for both of them.
Odd though, the marriage was registered in both Charlton, MA and in the town of Shrewsbury, MA. Two different clergymen are listed as having performed the marriage and on the same day. Also interestingly, the race of both is given as “white” in the Shrewsbury record but there is no race indicated in any of the Charlton records. In Shrewsbury, their marriage is the first for the year in Shrewsbury so it’s the first marriage on the page. All subsequent marriages for the year have “ “ under the white, meaning all the other marriages were of “white” people.
This just creates a bit of intrigue since it doesn’t alter any records. But it was interesting that in the 1910 census, Mary’s daughter by her first marriage is listed as, “race – Mulatto” and as the “step-daughter” of Elijah.

Hi again John,
I wanted to send this under a separate e-mail so I can make an explanation about one census error and another census that causes me to believe the children as listed in your report for Elijah may not be correct.
First the children.
The information for Elijah’s children does not reflect biological, step, etc. and they appear to all be presented as the children of Elijah and Mary. I suspect that is not correct. And let me explain.
That information is taken from the 1880 Census. In that census all of the children are described as the sons or daughters of Elijah.
In the 1870 census however, the family is composed of: Elijah, “Sarah”, Alice, Arthur, and Herbert. The children’s ages are given as 6, 4, and 1 respectively.
Alice b. abt 1864
Arthur b. abt 1866
Herbert b. abt 1869
Then, in the 1880 census the family is composed of: Elijah, Mary E, Alice, Lizzie M, Arthur P, Emma L, Herbert E, and Clarence A. Ages are 16, 14, 13, 12, 11 and 8 respectively.
Alice b. abt 1864
Lizzie b. abt 1866
Arthur b. abt 1867
Emma b. abt 1868
Herbert b. abt 1869
Clarence b. abt 1872
Both Lizzie and Emma appear, by age, between the original three children, and of course there is no Sarah and Mary E now appears.
By the time of the 1900 census, however, more information emerges. I believe the Ancestry.com index for the 1900 census is incorrect. It lists Emma as a daughter. However, I believe, that by viewing the actual census that the census actually states step daughter. Further, by 1900, years married was added to the census, along with number of children born to the mother and the number of children still living.
Years married is given as 23 making the date of their marriage about 1877. That, curiously, would be after all of the children were born. However, more importantly, the number of children born to Mary E is given as 3 and the number still living is given as 1. Only Emma is listed in this census. At his point I suspect Lizzie had died between 1880 and 1900. But Mary still is the mother of only 3 children, not 6.
Bear with me, it all becomes clear(er) in the 1910 census.
In 1910, Emma is clearly shown as “step-daughter”. Also, the years married, 39, now indicates a date of marriage of abt 1871. This is after the first 5 children were born but just a year before the last child, Clarence. And further, “married” is now given as “M2” for both Elijah and Mary E.
By 1920, race was added to the census. Emma L’s race is given as Mulatto.
SOoooo, based on all of that, I believe Elijah was married twice. And that the children parentage is as follows:
Elijah and Sarah:
Alice b. 1864
Arthur b. Jun 1867 (my great grandfather)
Herbert b. 1869
Elijah m. Mary E, abt 1871
Clarence b. 1872
Lizzie M and Emma L are the daughters of Mary E from a prior marriage and most likely to a person of color.
Elijah and Mary E
Clarence

Oh, one more thing, the Holbrook Mass Town Records collection recently was
added to Ancestry.com. You may recall I had challenged the many "trees" for
Elijah Rich Carpenter believing that two children were not his children,
they were the children of his second wife. The Town record collection now
verifies that. There is a notation on the original town record that was
omitted from the various "Vital Records" collections. Validating her name,
I was also then able to confirm her first marriage to a nephew of Elijah
Rich Carpenter (Henry L Carpenter) and the birth of those other two children
as being from her first marriage, and therefore not Elijah's children. -:)

Bill Quinn

Sarah Barker

She died the same day her husband died in 1867?  Yet he married for the second
time in 1854?  Death date probably not accurate.  It would be logical if she
died 3 April 1837 shortly after giving birth to a child who died at birth.
