From: Susquehanna County Sesquicentennial - 1810-1960:
"Ancient Little Church in Ararat, 111 Years old"
The Ararat Church, one of the oldest in the area, has a history that is as colorful as it is ancient. The first three pioneer families of this place met at Deacon John Tyler's, the first Sunday and held religious services. No minister was present, but there was prayer, singing, and reading of the Scripture. There in a vast wilderness, this little company laid the foundation for a new community.
When the Rev. Ebenezer Kingsbury and Rev. Samuel Sargent came three years later, the material was here; all it needed was organizing. This was accomplished Thursday the 22nd of April 1813 by Rev. Samuel Sargent of the Missionary society of Connecticut and the Rev. Ebenezer Kingsbury of Harford, who acted as moderator. The name adopted was The Congregational Church of Christ in Ararat. There were twelve members: John Tyler, Mercy Tyler, Hezekiah and Lucy Bushnell, Truman and Rhoda Clinton, Shubel and Ruth Williams, Jabez and Harriet Tyler, William West, and Lucinda Carpenter.
About the time that the church was organized, a little log school house, 14X18, was built just across the road from where the church now stands. It was used as a meeting place....
In 1849, to the energy and generosity of DAVID AVERY, built the present church at a cost of $1,169.00. He took his pay, in whatever the people gave, cattle, produce, or money.....
